Apart from its wide distribution in the United States and Central America, it is now widely distributed in many lakes in the Philippine islands, such as Luzon Island and southwestern Mindanao, making it an ideal specimen for studies on population dynamics and population genetics. Recently, new techniques have been emerging as important zooplankton monitoring tools, such as metabarcoding and the use of environmental DNA/environmental RNA. However, these would only be useful if good-quality reference DNA sequences are available before utilizing these techniques. This study sequenced the nearly complete nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) of A. dorsalis from 202 individuals from Lake Taal, Batangas. The total length was 5887 bp, which includes the partial 18S sequences, and the complete 5.8S, ITS and 28S sequences with an organization that is typical for any eukaryotic organism. This is the first record of a nearly complete nrDNA sequence for freshwater calanoid copepods and is considered an important stepping stone for further molecular studies in freshwater Copepoda.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48024632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acanthocyclops fiersi n. sp. represents the third species of the genus described from the Neotropics, only after A. rebecae and A. smithae. Acanthocyclops fiersi n. sp., is recognized as a member of the A. vernalis-robustus species-complex, and its clear divergence with respect to its congeners was supported using comparative morphology and molecular methods. The mtCOI marker revealed a 0.54% K2P divergence within populations of A. fiersi n. sp. and 17.6-22.41% with respect to other members of the A. vernalis-robustus species-complex. Acanthocyclops fiersi n. sp. might be restricted to the Yucatán Peninsula. Comments about the likely underestimated regional diversity of Acanthocyclops and the need of further studies in the Neotropics are provided. An identification key to the species of Acanthocyclops distributed in Mexico is included.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43040402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The asymptotic length (), growth coefficient (K) and arbitrary origin of growth (t0) were estimated by the ELEFAN method to be 16.18 cm, 0.60 year−1 and −0.18 year, respectively. The asymptotic length () was calculated as 16.09 cm using the Wetherall method. The growth performance index (Ø′) was found to be 2.19. The mortality parameters Z, F and M were computed to be 3.85, 2.30 and 1.55 year−1, respectively. The pattern of recruitment was observed to be year-round, with a peak from June to September. The total stock, annual catch and exploitation rate for P. indicus were estimated to be 1518.43 tonnes, 809.3 tonnes, and 0.59 year−1, respectively. The estimated Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) was found to be 131.95 tonnes less than the annual catch. The stock of P. indicus was found to be over-exploited, so it is suggested that the effort level be reduced by 16.3% in order to sustain this resource in Pulicat Lake.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43735143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
