The growth, performance in ovarian development, ovarian nutrient concentration, as well as vitellogenin and sex hormone levels were measured. The results showed that the final body weight and specific growth rate of E. carinicauda increased at first and then decreased with increasing salinity (), with the fastest growth occurring at salinity 24. The gonadosomatic index increased at first and then decreased with increasing salinity (), with the highest index also occurring at salinity 24. The ovarian maturation rate of E. carinicauda was highest at salinity 28, and the concentration of total protein, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in the ovaries similarly increased at first until salinity 24, and then decreased with increasing salinity (). Likewise, the concentration of vitellogenin in the hepatopancreas increased at first and then decreased with increasing salinity (), with the highest concentration occurring at salinity 24. The concentration of estradiol in E. carinicauda ovaries was highest in the groups at salinities 24 and 28. These results show that salinity levels of 24-28 were the most suitable for promoting the maturation of parent shrimps, and thus would likely be optimal for industrial culturing.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49621424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first copepodid is free-swimming, dispersive and infective; the second copepodid is found attached to or within its host and usually has undergone changes in morphology. Among free-living podopleans, changes in behaviour but not morphology are documented. Strengths and weaknesses of different evolutionary explanations are considered for these changes, including descent from a common free-living ancestor, convergences from several free-living ancestors, or a mixed model. More observations of free-living podopleans, like harpacticoids and cyclopoids, closely associated with the benthos, would be particularly valuable in testing each explanation.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44816256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coenobita rugosus H. Milne Edwards, 1837 was the only species recorded and found at three sites (Tiantai Hill, Xi’an Reservoir, and Tudigong). The density index of hermit crabs exhibited notable variations across the sites, showing no significant variation with the changing seasons. The bush habitat displayed a higher density index compared to the sand habitat. Additionally, the sites differed significantly in terms of the shell type and body size of the hermit crabs. Further, no significant relationship was established between abundance and weather factors or between crab abundance and sea turtle nesting. This investigation is a preliminary examination of the possibility of land hermit crabs being used as bioindicators for breeding of sea turtles.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42140325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results showed that the heritability of proximate composition traits, was 0.12 ± 0.07 for moisture, 0.04 ± 0.04 for crude fat, 0.07 ± 0.05 for crude protein and 0.03 ± 0.04 for ash, respectively. A positive genetic correlation (0.88) was observed between crude lipid and protein, whereas a negative correlation existed between crude lipid and moisture (−0.74), indicating that crude lipid content could be improved by moisture selection indirectly. The muscle-moisture trait has the highest heritability, and is the easiest parameter to measure among the four proximate composition traits. Our results provide fundamental information for the development of improved genetic-programmes utilizing quality traits of E. sinensis.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44769134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is more resistant to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) than other cultivable penaeid shrimps, which makes it a potential candidate for culture. The present study evaluated the influence of a different feeding rate of polychaete worms on the gonad development of male P. semisulcatus under captive conditions. P. semisulcatus sub-adults were obtained in the wild. The shrimps were fed with three different concentrations of polychaete worms, viz., ad libitum (T1), 5% of body weight (BW) (T2) and 10% BW (T3), and fresh sardines were fed as a Control (C) diet, all for a period of 60 days. Sampling was done once in 15 days and the bio-growth parameters were recorded. The gonads were harvested for histological analysis. The maximum weight gain (10.19 g), mean weight gain percentage (85.20%), mean daily growth rate (DGR) (0.169833) and mean specific growth rate (SGR) (0.45) were found in shrimps fed with the polychaete worm diet at 5% BW. The estimated bio-growth parameter values were statistically significant when analysed using One way ANOVA (). Histological sections of the testis showed variations in the development of the gonad between the treatments with different feeding rates during the 60 days trials. Indeed in all aspects, the development was higher in shrimps fed with polychaete worms at 5% BW. It can be concluded that feeding polychaete worms at 5% BW created a regime able to improve growth rates, gonad maturation, and quality in the development of the captive male brood stock.","PeriodicalId":10834,"journal":{"name":"Crustaceana","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47879346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
