Communication abilities are incredibly important, from job interviews to the professional world itself, and being good in English implies being able to speak simply and effectively. Our jobs and businesses are significantly impacted by the English language. English has taken over as the primary language of the global business community, regardless of regional, social, political, or religious differences. The goal of this research study is to examine the part that English language proficiency plays in an individual's professional development. Beginning with a basic assessment of English's function in emerging nations, this study focuses on four important roles that the language plays there. They are: English as a means of gaining global education; English as a means of obtaining international employment prospects; English as a means of promoting international communication. A thorough explanation of the research findings follows a description of the research report's methodology. A summary and conclusions round out the essay. The study adopted the descriptive cum analytical method to reach on conclusion.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117304056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Halliday in the 20th century. The theory looks at language as property owned by the society to serve some functions identified by the proponents of the construct. Precisely, Halliday holds that language performs three functions, namely, ‘the representational function’, ‘the interactional function’ and the ‘textual function.’ Analogous to these metafunctions, as he calls them, are three network systems: transitivity, mood and theme. The aim of this paper is to examine the mood network system in Obafemi’s Dark Times Are Over? To achieve this objective, 40 clauses were randomly selected from the play. The study employed systemic theory that largely comes from Michael Halliday and espoused by Eggins for data analysis. The study finds out that declarative moods are more present in the text.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125894312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously published papers on Tiv inflection at the disposal of the researchers do not treat progressive inflectional patterns in the language, let alone anchoring the study of progressive inflection in the Tiv language on Paradigm Function Morphology (PFM). Hence, the present study is designed to examine the progressive inflectional patterns in the Tiv language using the theoretical framework of Paradigm Function Morphology (PFM). The objectives of the study are to examine the progressive inflectional patterns featuring suffixation in the Tiv language and progressive inflectional patterns in the language featuring zero affixation. Since the study is designed to examine the progressive inflection in the Tiv language, the survey design was adopted. Data for the study were collected using semi-structured interviews and the researchers’ introspection. The study discovered that progressive inflectional patterns in the Tiv language are marked using suffixation and zero affixation respectively. The findings also show that progressive inflections are marked in the verbal roots so that such verbs can fit in with the syntactic structures in order to express ongoing activities or actions in the Tiv language.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122161532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are symbolic as they carry the cultural wisdom and heritage of any community. Studies in the past have shown that proverbs just like other oral traditions help in the construction of identities and ideologies. Such identities and ideologies are as in gender, the roles of those genders and stereotypes alike. Kikuyu proverbs, particularly those on the role and position of women are no different. They are carriers of meaning. Kikuyu proverbs, just like many other proverbs, can be translated to other languages and their equivalents are provided as well. This paper studies selected Kikuyu proverbs about women and their English equivalent. The aim is to investigate whether the Kikuyu and their English equivalent proverbs have a similar semantic structure. The study also makes a comparison of the cultural themes. This study was premised on the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach by Anna Wierzbicka (1996) and Cliff Goddard (2002). Data for the analysis were collected from both oral and written sources. From the collected proverbs, 10 were selected for analysis. The analysis involved semantic explication of proverb texts using the five-part semantic template for proverbs analysis: ‘traditionality’, ‘recurrent situation’, ‘advice’, ‘analogy’, and ‘status as folk wisdom’ as proposed by Goddard. The finding was that the selected Kikuyu proverbs did not have a similar semantic structure to their English equivalent. The proverbs lacked elements such as ‘advice’ or ‘analogy’ when compared alongside. There was also a difference in their cultural themes.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116012515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method of analysis of this descriptive-qualitative study is based on the frameworks of the elements of stance by Hyland (2005), sub-categories of verb groups by Burton-Roberts (1994), and classification of verbal prototypes by Dixon and Aikhenvald (2004) employing Wetherell et al.'s (2001) four approaches to discourse analysis. This study analyzed five (5) randomly selected city ordinances of Tagum City from 2000 to 2017 with topics focusing on health, women, children, gender, and family. Based on the analyses of data, the findings revealed that in the city ordinances’ (a) boosters are used to express persuasion; (b) complex transitive verb groups are used to provide justification or support to the provisions; (c) affective verbs are used to express commitment and responsibility; and (d) stance markers, lexico-grammatical patterns of verbs and semantics of verbs contribute to the overall meaning and understanding in the city ordinances and helped in the easy understanding of the local law. The results of this study are found to have implications concerning the students, language teachers, government officials, and future researchers.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115869490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the study examined whether or not any statistically significant correlation exists between students writing apprehension and writing performances level, the degree to which students feel writing apprehension, and their level of writing apprehension influences students’ writing performance. To achieve this objective, a descriptive-correlational design was employed. Then, questionnaires, interviews and writing tests were used for data gathering. Accordingly, the collected data was analyzed by quantitative and qualitative approaches. The research revealed that students had moderate writing apprehension and low writing performances level. In addition, the research findings show a modest negative correlation between students writing apprehension and their performance level. However, the correlation was found insignificant. Besides this, the research findings show students' writing performances are not significantly influenced by the factors (students’ negative view of their writing ability, fear of evaluation and avoidance of writing activities) or level of writing apprehension. And at the end, recommendations were given in order to bring to attention about the relationship and the influence of students’ level of writing apprehension on their writing performances when writing in English at tertiary level.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114758950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While an infinitesimal figure has spoken in support of the invasion, most world leaders have outrightly condemned the action of the Russian government led by Vladimir Putin who in the process of justifying his actions, claims that the reason for the invasion was to “de-nazify” the Ukrainian government policies. Ironically, Putin himself is a product of Nazism, a system of government that he strongly supported in his prime. Moreso, in the days of the USSR, the Russian government had been accused of the same offense the Russian government is accusing Ukraine of. Therefore, this is a clear case of linguistic labeling embellished in the exercise of power as a justification for the activity carried out by a more superior force. The theoretical framework of CDA was adopted in this study because it focuses squarely on the projection of ideology and the intersection of power play in any form of discourse. It also brings out indices of hidden meanings in texts and tries to proffer solutions to societal problems from the perspective of language use. The study reveals cases of polarization, ideological projection, the deployment of linguistic resources in form of labeling to justify the actions of Putin over the Ukrainians. There is also the deliberate attempt to “annex” or “conquer” the less powerful using application of force through the policy of “imposition”.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134495411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work tries to examine and expose the corrupt practices used by politicians and military rulers. The work will also examine some symbols that represent political corruption and foreign leadership in Nigeria since the coming of the British. This work will adopt post-colonial and sociological theories in the analysis of the text. Finally, the arrival of the British in Nigeria brought civilization, but it also brought corruption and ethnic differences, which led to war. This paper  conducts a  morphosyntactic and semantic analysis of toponymns (place names) among the Luhya group of speakers  in Western Kenya, Bungoma County. A structural and  functional approach is used  to analyse the naming  patterns  with the idea that African names, as signs of language, can be divided into two morpho-syntactic categories:nominal that is, they constitute single words, or syntagmatic, meaning they are made up of sentences or phrases. Purposively sampled thirty  place names are selected  from the IEBC inventory and  nine key respondents from the nine  sub counties. The 30 names are subjected to morpho-syntactic analysis whereas the semi-structured interviews are used to elicit data on etimology and meaning of names from the nine respondents within the framework of the Frame Semantic theory by Fillmore, (Fillmore, 1982). The theory is used to  ascertain whether the meaning-making elements in the respective toponymns reflect the historical functions and meanings embedded within the names.The findings reveal that Luhya place names are generated through grammatical rules as a result of word transformations. Such names are generated from nominals and their resulting phrases through derivational morphology.Three word formation processes namely, pre-fixation, compounding and borrowing  are exhibited in the naming process. Semantically, the study reveals that Luhya place names are  transparent and descriptive in terms of their function. Places are named after topographical features, historical events, climatic conditions and prominent people.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126760655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It concentrates mainly on Christianity and Islamic religions’ hate speeches against themselves using the Speech Act Theory. The speech act theory according to Austin (1978) has three assumptions; locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary acts which explain that a speech made is referential, performative and result effective respectively. The research uses the theory with the intention that it covers what the hateful speech (referential) is, the reaction of the person to whom the hate speech is referred to (performative) and the consequences of the reaction of the victim (result) which in most cases are attacks. The work uses descriptive research design and its data is achieved through an observational method which sourced data from both primary and secondary sources (documented materials) and the data is analysed using a qualitative technique. In relation to the related existing literature, the work has achieved the reality of the struggle between Christians and Muslims in their battles through offensive words (hate speeches) which culminate to crisis in Nigeria. This study points out the linguistic implication of crisis/insecurity in Nigeria through religious people and suggests that government should put in place control mechanisms that can regulate the use of language to curtail hate speech that degenerate into insecurity in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":108341,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Languages, Linguistics and Literary Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129595313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
