However for certain data mining tasks like finding potential causes of a disease or side-effects of a drug, where missing a small piece of information can have grave consequences, the coverage of automatically acquired knowledge bases is often insufficient. This paper explores the use of automatic hypothesis generation for expanding a knowledge base of semantic relations, using distributional word similarities obtained from a large Web corpus. If successful, such a method can drastically improve the coverage of automatically acquired semantic relations, at the expense of a slight reduction in accuracy. We show that large scale similarity-based relation expansion works quite well for this purpose. Using a 100 million Japanese Web page corpus as input, we could generate a substantial amount of new semantic relations that were not found in the input corpus but whose validity was confirmed in a much larger Web corpus, i.e., by using a commercial Web search engine.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123066856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semantic role labeling (SRL) aims at identifying the relations between predicates in a sentence and their associated arguments. They are two fundamental tasks in natural language processing to find a sentence-level semantic representation. To date, they have mostly been modeled in isolation. However, this approach neglects logical constraints between them. In this work, we present some novel word sense features for SRL and find that they can improve the performance significantly. Later, we exploit pipeline strategies which verify the automatic all word sense disambiguation could help the semantic role labeling and vice versa. We further propose a Markov logic model that jointly labels semantic roles and disambiguates all word senses. We show that this joint approach leads to a higher performance for WSD and SRL than those pipeline approaches.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125549144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, with the development of motion capture technology, motion capture data plays an important role in the kinetic analysis of human motion. An interesting problem is whether BSPs can be estimated using the motion capture data. It is well known that the motions of human body should obey Newton's laws of mechanics, which means that human BSPs and motion data should satisfy the motion equation. Then we build an optimization model according to this principle where the objective function measures the degree of mismatch between motion data, human BSPs and Newton's laws of mechanics. By solving this optimization model, we can estimate the human BSPs. To deal with this optimization, we adopt three strategies: variables block, adjustment on constraints and stochastic local search. This method has two advantages. First, given motion capture data, BSPs can be estimated directly without carrying out additional measurements, such as CT imaging. Second, BSPs and motion capture data can be analyzed together. Simulation experimental results show that the errors of mass, centroid and moment of inertia can be controlled within 10%, 5% and 15% respectively.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126603854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It utilizes sound source positions and original source signals as features. On the other hand, sound source orientations (such as speaker's orientation) have been neglected, though they are necessary for high-performance URC. In this paper, we propose a 3D sound field recording and reproducing system that includes sound source orientation. For the recording part, we applied and evaluated a sound source orientation estimation method based on orientation-extended beamforming. This method requires transfer functions for all possible source positions and orientations, which should be either measured or calculated. Measured transfer functions have high accuracy because all characteristics, such as reverberations and diffractions, are taken into account. Calculated transfer functions are obtained for any environment without measurements. We performed experiments to evaluate the orientation estimation method using transfer functions obtained by both practical measurements and calculations using acoustic simulation based on wave theory. The experimental results show that our estimation method has sufficient capability using both measured and calculated transfer functions. For the reproducing part, we evaluated impulse responses versus sound source orientation. The evaluation results revealed significant differences in both objective and subjective scores. This proves that our system achieves higher performance than conventional ones that do not utilize orientation features.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"437 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124253331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In machine translation, tokenization and parsing mistakes due to segmentation and structural ambiguities potentially introduce translation errors. A well-known solution is to provide more alternatives by using compact representations such as lattice and forest. In this talk, I will introduce a technique that goes beyond using lattices and forests, which integrates tokenization, parsing, and translation in one system. Therefore, tokenization, parsing, and translation can interact with and benefit each other in a discriminative framework. Experimental results show that such integration significantly improves tokenization and translation performance.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115947886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most current concept map tools do not provide full support for hand-drawn concept map creation and manipulation, largely due to the lack of methods to recognize hand-drawn concept maps. We propose a structure recognition method. Our algorithm can extract node blocks and link blocks of a hand-drawn concept map by combining dynamic programming and graph partitioning and then build a concept-map structure by relating extracted nodes and links. We also introduce structure-based intelligent manipulation technique of hand-drawn concept maps. Evaluation shows that our method has high structure recognition accuracy in real time, and the intelligent manipulation technique is efficient and effective. Based on the technique, a note-taking tool ‘IdeaNote’ is developed. It not only supports natural note taking, but also supports efficient note editing. Besides research related to hand-drawn concept map, I will also introduce our work on other ink computing techniques and the systems we have developed.","PeriodicalId":108217,"journal":{"name":"2010 4th International Universal Communication Symposium","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133550094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
