Complete renovation is costly, time-consuming, results in disruption of traffic and is not sustainable. Current repair alternatives are often time-consuming and heavy in weight. In addition to existing methods, fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) could provide a repair alternative whereby applying a FRP deck will relieve the main girders and can mean that the greater part of the existing bridge can remain. The lifespan of existing structures can be longer extended. This offers new technical and strategic possibilities for the major renovation and replacement task of bridge structures of Rijkswaterstaat, explained in this paper. An updated version of the Dutch CUR-96 recommendation on the design of FRP structures was published in 2018 and an English translation in 2019. This document offers an improved framework and guidelines and is comparable to the Eurocodes regarding concrete and steel structures at material level. The recommendation may therefore be regarded as a desirable basis for the development of a Eurocode for FRP composite structures. Like other road authorities, Rijkswaterstaat is looking into the possibility of replacing current bridge deck structures of highway structures with FRP decks, mainly due to the favorable weight and durability performance. Various already applied FRP structures in Europe demonstrate the possibilities and value of its application.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131078135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reference is made to the case study of Castelluccio di Norcia, a village in the Apennine Mountains affected by the seismic sequence that hit Central Italy in 2016. The earthquake risk of the area and the damaging events of 2016 are critically reviewed. The implementation of cognitive analysis and the application of advanced survey techniques involving the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for the purposes of emergency management and monitoring of damaged areas are analysed. The outcomes, combined with the direct involvement of the local population, represent a complete and integrated approach allowing the definition of a) possible intervention strategies, b) related decision criteria and c) practical recommendations for the reconstruction and regeneration of Castelluccio, and, in general, of small historic centres damaged by catastrophic events.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116395978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) can provide a tool to assess safety to obtain a more realistic estimation of the existing safety. Guidelines, based on scientific research, general consensus among peers, and a long-term experience with nonlinear analysis, allow for a reduction of model and user factors. The guidelines have been developed with a two-fold purpose. First, to advice analysts on NLFEA of (P)RC structures. Second, to explain the choices made and to educate analysts, related to the responsibility of limiting model uncertainty. The updated 2017 NLFEA Guidelines can be used for the FE analysis of basic concrete structural elements. Existing concrete structures, like box-girder structures, culverts, cable-stayed bridges and bridge with composite bridge decks can be analysed. The paper contains an overview of the impact of extended validation simulations of tested RC girders with variations in dimensions of cross-sections, amount of reinforcement, strength of concrete. In this way NLFEA can be a reliable tool for re-analysis of existing RC structures.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123667905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The viaduct, as well as many others belonging to the national road network, was built in the second half of the last Century and has been in service for over fifty years. The bridge has experienced a dramatic increase in the heavy lorries traffic, together with degradation that developed much faster than expected due to the aggressive environment. In the present paper, a possible scenario is proposed to put into evidence how the combined effect of fatigue at very-high number of cycles and corrosion could have been responsible for the sudden failure of one of the strands and the subsequent collapse of the so-called balanced system conceived by the designer Morandi. Our purpose is to warn the scientific community and the public administrations about the combined effects of low amplitude cycle fatigue and corrosion, which can be dangerously underestimated in the safety assessment of last Century bridges asset.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124647555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An improved efficiency variant is examined for the activation of reserve load capacity of a double span bridge by applying an additional top concrete layer. The structural behaviour of the built-up section was modelled by the use of a non-linear finite element software. Despite reinforcing the slab cross-section, the resistance in field areas still can be insufficient, while high potential is seen at the intermediate support. Therefore, a possible outer restraint of the bridge superstructure was taken into consideration for redistributing bending moments, whereby any creep phenomena were additionally analysed. Further, a plastic cross-section rotation according to the standards of Eurocode 2, could be successfully demonstrated to be sufficiently effective on a two-field system.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130284376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first part of the paper defines the main features of the “green” approach to the built environment. Selected examples illustrate diverse approaches to designing footbridges, and what combines them is the use of digital tools, especially the topological and analytical ones, in shaping and constructing parametric forms. The second part presents how structural engineers and architects can develop a new framework for the urban design by correlating digital morphogenesis and ecology. This integrated “morpho-ecological” approach has resulted in a new kind of eco-friendly bridges, based on the modulation of micro-environmental conditions within an emergent macro-environmental system. The conducted research has presented alternative ideas of efficiency and sustainability.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"203 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115636742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the work of important designers such as Arturo Danusso, Eugenio Miozzi, Giulio Krall gave a huge impulse to bridge engineering in Italy, reducing the gap with leading countries. In particular, the role of Riccardo Morandi was quite exceptional, due to his innovative design criteria which are very well represented, for example, in the Storms River bridge in South Africa and in the Fiumarella Bridge in Catanzaro. The recent tragedy of the collapse of Polcevera viaduct in Genova is instrumental in discussing the different approaches needed when dealing with important existing bridges and the possibile retrofitting techniques.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115866266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scour-fill phenomena can be divided into two stochastic variables: 1) The erosive process, 2) The sedimentation process. A simplified stochastic process is proposed for the study of both phenomena. The events that trigger the scour are modelled using data that is statistically pre-processed, their behaviour is characterized as a general extreme value distribution (GEV). The events that trigged the sedimentation are modelled in the same fashion that the erosion, but their behaviour is characterized as a lognormal distribution. The stochastic process is solved by Monte Carlo simulations, each simulation provides a history of scour-fill depths that are later used to assess the behaviour of the bridge using a non-linear static analysis . Based on the results it can be seen that the scour accumulation of multiple low return period events may be much higher that the common design event for hydraulic events, making the bridges weaker against lateral forces.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134022085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
