The paper reviews the additional effects onto the stress state of the concrete slab coming from the transformation of open conventional twin girder steel-concrete composite bridge cross section to semi-closed (box-section). These effects are investigated through the help of FE model of a bridge superstructure. Conclusions and recommendations are drawn at the end.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131121610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge were determined through three-point bending tests. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The main tower, originally 83 metres high, has been cut to almost half its height. There is hardly anything left of the former, sky pointing character. The building looks now for many years in such a way incompletely over the city of Dresden. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the St. Luke's Church, in 2000 the parishioners of the St. Luke’s Church had the idea to rebuild the tower helmet of the main tower and the eastern side tower of the St. Luke’s Church. This paper describes a feasibility study for the reconstruction of the St. Luke’s church tower. Because all construction plans were burned during the war, the original dimensions of the tower’s helmet had to be determined first by means of an elaborate geometric reconstruction. Based on these dimensions a new steel construction was designed and a proposal for the on-site assembly was worked out.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121150231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bridge was designed in the 1940s by a British company and was completed in the early 1950s. Once the original drawings were located in an archive in theU.K. a team was established to examine the existing bridge. The bridge was surveyed and all information collected in the field and archives was processed in the office for a detailed review report including the status of all the elements including ranking and identifying major defects. A full model of the bridge was computerized based on the findings and calculated for both the original and up to date loads in order to examine the capacity of the bridge members and the global stability. From the information collected and calculated, the recommendation was to preserve the bridge as a unique element in Nigeria's heritage.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129652645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Total length of the bridge is 504.00 m and of the viaduct is 701.00 m. From 50- ties XX century up to now both of them were modernized 3 times at least. The piers and foundations are more than 100 years old. Concrete girders of the viaduct (35 spans) are in similar age but were repaired in 80-ties. The frame concrete stiffeners were exchanged in that time as well as the deck (steel gird with concrete plate). The same kind of deck is placed on steel girders of four truss spans and four arch spans of the bridge. The first ones are 30 years old but the second one serve from 1946. During this long history everything was changed – materials, traffic loads and environmental requirements about vibration of structure and noise generated by trams and cars. Bicycle traffic also groves rapidly. All of these factors force modernization according to contemporary requirements but against many conservation regulations.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122448416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This synergy was a motivation to start of the R&D project on the combination of both materials for bridge structural elements, particularly deck slabs and prefab arch structures. The first results of the R&D project are presented in the paper. The research works comprised the initial comparative static tests of full- scale models made of LWC/GFRP against those made of a normal concrete (NWC) and/or reinforced by steel rebars. Despite to generally worse structural performance under static load, both tested elements made of the LWC reinforced with GFRP rebars have shown a structural potential to be considered in bridge construction. Test results initially confirmed their limit states as calculated in design based on relevant codes of practice, but further tests should be carried out to confirm their safety and serviceability.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121462345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, BIM implementation in structural engineering is not as common as in architectural design and this becomes more evident dealing with the maintenance and refurbishment of existing buildings. In this context, the implementation of an integrated BIM methodology for the assessment of the seismic performance of existing masonry buildings is proposed based on a non-linear static algorithm, called E-PUSH, previously developed by the authors. An effective workflow is defined, relying on software’s interoperability at the architectural and structural level, able to create a dynamic, customized and flexible procedure. The proposed methodology has been developed and critically analysed through real case studies and it may be extended to an increasingly broad collection of existing buildings. It offers an integrated solution for the assessment and management of existing buildings by means a continuous updating of the information model.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132669328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bridge was built on low bearing capacity and soft soil. For the most part, the bridge deck is supported on the stone embankment while the passage of sea under the bridge is allowed through three vaults. During its 450 years of existence, the Upper Bridge has been destroyed several times due to river floods or damaged as a result of the ground settlement. In the catastrophic flood that occurred in 2017 the middle third of the bridge was completely destroyed. The presented project of bridge reconstruction and restoration solved the problem of foundation of the bridge and flow problem through the extended flow profile underneath the vaults taking into account the earthquake resistance, durability of the structure and original appearance of the bridge.","PeriodicalId":107895,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Wroclaw 2020: Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129024164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
