These inter-area oscillations can be damped using optimal wide-area control loop. In this paper a novel method is proposed for wide-area input-output signal selection based control using ADMM. In this approach, first interconnected power system is divided into areas. Then using measured data, a black-box transfer function model is estimated locally for each area based on Lagrange multipliers. The local area controllers communicate with the central controller to estimate a global transfer function model of the power system. Based on the estimated global transfer function, the residue corresponding to inter-area mode is calculated. This provides information of optimal wide area control loop. Residue and corresponding eigenvalue information is used for wide-area damping controller design. The performance of the selected optimal wide-area controller design is validated using Kundur two area test system on RTDS/RSCAD® and MATLAB® co-simulation platform.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134160851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical of these faults are those in the tension or roll force measurements which would preclude a valid measurement of these variables. Such faults could degrade the process availability and seriously reduce the quality of the output, which could result in a major loss of production and possible equipment damage. We investigate in this paper a method of control for this process that permits continuity of operation during possible faults in the tension or roll force measurements, and without major disruptions in process operation or significant reduction in the quality of the output. The effectiveness of this method is shown by simulations.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134300855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The NO was adsorbed on a coconut shell granular activated carbon (GAC) impregnated with copper (2%). The ADR setup consisted in a sequence of DBD reactors. The first one also contained the GAC. The adsorption was carried out at about 32°C with a gas mixture of 250 ppm of NO in air (10% of O2) at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s. The mechanisms of NO uptake include simple adsorption and catalytic reduction on the copper impregnated GAC. During the desorption/reduction process, a stream of N2 at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s was passed through the reactors in presence of non-thermal plasma. A set of voltages between 10 to 36 kVpk_pk and the frequency of 800–1400 Hz was tested to obtain the required plasma for an efficient NO desorption and reduction. The experimental results showed that the ADR system is able to reduce >96% of the NO with a single reactor and >99% of NO with two reactors in series. Besides, cyclic ADR tests indicated that the GAC preserve more than 90% of its uptake capacity after 30 cycles.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133583079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The simulation results calculated by these parameters have a large difference from the results of testing. Some people proposed that the accuracy parameters could be obtained by parameter identification base on experiment results. However, the large disturbance testing of large synchronous generator is hard to implement. Therefore, this paper proposes that the parameters are identified based on the results calculated by Time-Stepping Finite Element Model (T-S FEM). With a 300 MW turbine generator as an example, the steady-state parameters (xd, xq), transient parameters (xd', xq', Td0', Tq0') and sub-transient parameters (xd\", xq\", Td0\", Tq0\") are identified by the least square method, and compared with the results by the empirical formula. The parameters are identified in different power angle and the influences factor on different parameters are compared and analyzed. Since the rotor slot wedge has several materials to choose from, the parameters of synchronous generator with slot wedge made from aluminum and stainless steel are identified respectively. The result shows that the parameters have a great difference in different power angle. The sub-transient time constants of synchronous generator with the rotor slot wedge made from stainless steel are smaller than that made from aluminum.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114663770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modulation and control for medium voltage high power application are implemented at low device switching frequency in order to attain high efficiency and to reduce cooling requirements. At low switching frequency operation, the conventional modulation techniques such as space vector modulation (SVM) and sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) cannot maintain low total harmonic distortion (THD). Synchronous optimal pulse width modulation (SOPWM) is a low frequency modulation technique that offers lower THD without compromising on device switching frequency. However, this technique requires a separate conversion technique for current source converters to incorporate additional switching constraints of CSI. Whereas, the SVM technique directly implements the switching constraints of CSI without any conversion technique and in addition SVM technique provides better dynamic performance compared to low frequency modulation techniques. Hence, the goal of this paper is to propose a hybrid modulation technique that combines the SVM technique and SOPWM technique. Three methods have been proposed for developing hybrid modulation scheme based on SVM and SOPWM. Performance of the proposed hybrid modulation is validated using experimental results.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115088342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, an equivalent circuit using the first-order RC for describing the dynamic behavior of the battery has been developed. Parameters of the battery are identified using the Ageist Spider Monkey Optimization (ASMO) technique. The optimization method uses the anticipated terminal voltage of the battery during operation and error between the anticipated and measured voltage for identification of parameters. The focus of this paper is the implementation of recursive estimation of battery SOC using extended Kalman filter (EKF) and Central Difference Kalman Filter (CDKF) approach. The estimation has an absolute root-mean-square error (RMSE) of less than 4% and an absolute maximum error less than 6% in all circumstances. The test results indicate that CDKF has good performance compared to EKF for the estimation of battery SOC.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117056991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed DR is developed to mimic the industrial DR, which is based on injecting power to the grid during peak-demand times. The power injection in the proposed DR is achieved by discharging distributed energy storage units (DESUs) that are charged during off-peak-demand times. The desired DESUs are interconnected at distribution transformers that feed RLs. The injection of power during peak-demand times is aimed to reduce the grid power delivery during peak-demand hours. The DESU-based DR is implemented for performance evaluation using sets of data collected from several RLs during different seasons. Performance results show that the developed DR can be operated to offset the grid power delivery by more than 70% of RL power demands during peak-demand times. In addition, performance results demonstrate that the DESU-based DR is independent from the patterns of RL power consumption and/or number of customers participating in energy saving programs. The encouraging performance of the DESU-based DR supports its application to implement smart grid functions for RLs.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124821899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The droop control mechanism is a widely accepted control method in a microgrid operation. However, a droop controller is unable to provide inertia support in such systems, and thus, cannot contribute in primary frequency control during disturbances. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) method was introduced in 2007 for the grid interfacing inverter control, this approach can provide virtual inertia support along with emulation of steady-state droop characteristics of synchronous generators. In this paper, a fuzzy secondary controller (FSC) based VSG control scheme is proposed for voltage and frequency regulation in microgrids. The proposed control scheme shows significantly improved dynamic performance when compared with conventional droop and conventional VSG control through several case studies. Its effectiveness and robustness is further evaluated through sensitivity studies.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129793701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
