Typically, the iron core of a traditional transformer is composed of E- and I-shape laminations to reduce core loss. The reluctance for the magnetic-flux path inside the iron core of a transformer is significantly affected by the stack, shape, and magnetic property of the laminated core as well as the effective length and area of the magnetic circuit. This paper simulates the magnetic-field distributions of a practical single-phase distribution transformer using a simulation software of FLUX 2D based on finite-element analysis (FEA). Both efficiency and voltage regulation of six different improved E- and I-shape laminated cores are evaluated and compared for future design of single-phase distribution transformers with higher efficiency. The measured inrush currents of the studied distribution transformer subject to various transient conditions are also compared with the simulated ones to validate the feasibility of the simulated model.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131394840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Superconducting cable offers one of the most effective solutions to meet these requirements. However, application of superconducting cable to such a plant has not been reported. In this paper, the static and dynamic performance of a superconducting cable applied to a typical distribution substation feeding an oil/gas planet is investigated. The voltage distribution under steady state operation and the transient voltage and current during fault conditions are examined and compared with conventional cables. It is found that, in addition to improving efficiency, the superconducting cable can be applied without further constraints on circuit breaker duties and insulation coordination requirements. Furthermore, a typical electric power network in the plant is proposed.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"131 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132388685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The VPP and MGs models are simulated and tested based on real parameters and loads data recorded in Perlis Malaysia employed on each bus of the system for 24 hours. BBSA optimization algorithm provides the best binary fitness function i.e. global minimum fitness for finding the best cell to generate the optimal schedule. The obtained results show that the BBSA algorithm provides the best schedule for the energy management turning DGs ON and OFF in the MGs with the consideration of real weather conditions for solar irradiation and wind speed battery charge/discharges fuel states and demand of the specific hour. The developed BBSA optimization algorithm minimizes the power generation cost reduces power losses delivers the reliable high-quality power to the loads and integrates priority based sustainable MGs into the grid. One of such techniques a Selective Harmonics Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE-PWM) scheme. Specific odd harmonics can be mitigated by operating the semiconductor switches in H-bridge inverters at optimized switching angles of the PWM signals. These switching angles are determined by calculating a set of nonlinear equations. Multilevel converters operated by PWM, suffer from the issue of harmonic spikes in the output voltage. In this paper, an improved scheme of SHE-PWM is proposed for multilevel converter to mitigate THD and supress the harmonic spikes of the system. To investigate and confirm the proposed technique, a five-level cascade multilevel inverter is simulated, and experimentally implemented. It is seen that the simulation results are verified experimentally by eliminating low-order harmoinics in getting a THD of 23.20% without using filter. The experimental results of the developed multilevel converer is validated with the simulation results under different performance conditions which show a complete agreement between them in terms of shapes and values.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124782142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, Re-entrainment phenomenon occurs in conventional electrostatic precipitator (ESP). A new hole-type ESP was developed to overcome the re-entrainment in the ESP. The hole-type ESP utilizes the ionic wind and coulomb force to induce particle motion into the hole. To understand this mechanism, visualization of particle behavior is important. In this study, the particle behavior, the particle velocity, and the influx rate of particle in the hole were investigated. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used especially to analyze the ionic wind and particle behavior in hole-type ESP. The ESP model was made of clear acrylic. The high voltage electrode was a stainless needle electrode, and the ground electrode was a plate electrode with a hole in its center. It was confirmed that the particles flowed into the hole with discharge current of 3μΑ. In order to confirm quantitatively whether particles are flowing into the hole, the influx rate of particle in the hole was calculated. The influx rate of particle in the hole was improved by moving the position of the needle electrode in toward the ESP inlet direction.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125919291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Before connecting to the electricity grid again, DFIG has to be synchronized to minimize the transient effects and ensure smooth connection to the power grid. In this paper, a direct voltage control based synchronization technique is proposed for DFIG based wind turbines. Additional control features are added to original direct voltage control method for implementation of the proposed synchronization strategy. A grid connection logic is designed and presented for soft connection of DFIG to the grid. The proposed technique is implemented in a DFIG based wind turbine model and tested through simulations with various practical scenarios. Voltage transients, frequency analysis, voltage phase and system stability are analyzed in details and simulation results presented. From the results, it can be revealed that the proposed synchronization technique functions effectively and efficiently. It is also shown that by using the proposed technique, the process of synchronization and grid connection do not introduce any changes into the system, which may cause protection devices to trip or mal-operation.","PeriodicalId":107824,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123431204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
