The value of herbal medicine in cancer patients can only be fully realised when prescription is integrated into conventional cancer management models; a medico rather than patient driven strategy. Integrated medicine is a holistic approach to cancer care, with some herbal medicines showing proven effectiveness as adjuvants to conventional medical treatments. At the present time there is little evidence of a systematic process of evaluation or dialogue between mainstream medicine and herbal medicine practitioners. This review offers an evidence-based perspective of herbal medicine for cancer prevention, cancer treatment, managing cancer survival and palliation.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133596650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly assigned into three groups (A, B and C) of ten rats each. Group A was the control, Group B was untreated diabetic group and group C was A. muricata-treated group. Diabetes mellitus was experimentally induced in groups B and C by a single intra-peritoneal injection of 80mg/kg streptozotocin dissolved in 0.1M citrate buffer. Group A rats were intraperitoneally injected with equivalent volume of citrate buffer. Daily intra peritoneal injection of 100mg/kg A. muricata was administered to group C rats for two weeks. The rats were sacrificed and the pancreas were removed and fixed in Bouins fluid. The tissues were processed for paraffin embedding and sections of 5μm thickness were produced and stained. Histopathological examination of the stained sections showed regeneration β-cells of islets of pancreas of A. muricata-treated rats when compared to untreated diabetic group of rats.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130872452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of the CAM providers are engaged in the advertising of various remedial methods for numerous diseases in the local newspapers of the country. This exploratory study investigated such advertisements collected from some renowned newspapers of Bangladesh. Most of the advertisements in those newspapers were found to focus mainly on the conditions related to sex and sexuality. Other major manifestations reported were related to psychological, cancers related and gynecological issues. Exaggerated and incongruent treatment claims were very common with 100% money-back treatment guarantee in some advertisements. Homeopathy system claimed to treat all possible cancers of human being. Advertisements of CAM in the newspapers of Bangladesh appear to be misleading, which may have potentials to misdirect patients from seeking better treatment options for their ailments.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127454246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: The present study was planned to evaluate endogenous antioxidants in normolipidemic acute myocardial infarct (AMI) patients. Setting & Design: The serum lipid profile, albumin, uric acid, total bilirubin, malondialdehyde and conjugated dienes were determined in 165 normolipidemic patients diagnosed of AMI and 165 age-sexes matched healthy volunteers served as control. Material & Methods: Serum albumin was measured by Bromo cresol green (BCG) dye binding method, uric acid was measured by phosphotungstic acid reduction method and serum total bilirubin by Jendrassik and Grof method, serum MDA was measure by MDA method estimating TBARS and conjugated dienes by Recknagel and Glende method (with little modifications) in AMI patients and controls. Also lipid profile was analyzed enzymatically in these subjects. Statistics: The values were expressed as means ± standard deviation (SD) and data from patients and control was compared using student's't'-test. Results And Conclusion: The endogenous antioxidants were significantly decreased (p<0.001) in AMI patients compared to controls. Serum malondialdehyde and conjugated dienes were significantly (p<0.001) increased in AMI patients compared to controls. Also total cholesterol, TC: HDL-C ratio, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, LDL-C: HDL-C ratio and TG: HDL-C ratio were higher in AMI subjects (p<0.001) and HDL-cholesterol were lower in AMI subjects (p<0.001).","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115833185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CASE REPORT A 43 year old female with multiple sclerosis was treated for approximately ten years, utilizing a specific type of acupuncture therapy. Noted incidentally on hospital admission for pneumonia and urinary tract infection, the gold-seed needle tips were permanently implanted, with the intent of long-term symptom relief. In this case, the patient attributed resolution of her right foot drop to the treatments. Little is written in Western medicine regarding efficacy and possible side effects of such implants. Some Eastern cultures use the technique to treat inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus erythematosus. However, gold compounds are being explored as an alternative option in the management of various other conditions. References 1. Barratt, J., Steer, H., and Onyirioha, T. (2007). The main aim of this study was to assess the in vitro insulin-like effects of naringenin using rat adipocyte primary culture. The adipogenic, lipolytic and glucose uptake activities of naringenin in primary rat adipocytes were assessed using Oil Red O, glycerol, and 2-deoxy-D-2,6-3Hglucose uptake quantitative assays respectively. Naringenin exhibited significant increase of lipogenesis in the presence and absence of insulin in primary rat preadipocytes. At the concentration range of 0.01 - 100 µM, naringenin inhibited 50 % of epinephrine induced lipolysis in rat adipocytes and enhanced insulin's antilipolytic activity. Naringenin (100 µM) stimulated 163 % glucose uptake in rat adipocytes (compared to untreated cells) and this was significantly higher than the insulin mediated glucose uptake at similar concentration. Thus, naringenin may play an important role as an adjuvant and/or alternative to insulin therapy for the management of diabetes mellitus. The major issues that come up while dealing with autism are in the following areas: Firstly there are the behavioural issues such as hyperactivity, temper tantrums, poor attention span, decreased concentration and poor focusing. Secondly there are the speech, language and communication issues that are a major concern for parents. Thirdly there are the social skills impairment such as poor eye contact and poor interaction with peers. It has been seen that it is not possible to manage the above mentioned problems with just training alone. Learning is not possible when the child is hyperactive or is not able to focus or concentrate. Also the behavioural and communication problems may stem from an internal rather than an external cause that needs to be rectified. In such a situation it has been observed that with homoeopathic treatment the child's understanding, eye contact and in the long run, communication also improve. For example: In one case, a parent mentioned that she was trying to train her son in self care activities that was very tedious, as she had to make him do it step by step and he would forget it immediately. She would then have to repeat the whole process everyday. But after homoeopathic treatment, she just had to ask him to do that activity and he would comply without making any mistakes as his understanding and receptive language skills had improved.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122868700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variety Ranichauri (Local varieties) and KM-252 had five and four phenolic acids respectively, in which GA was maximum. Gaza, Vl-146 and VL-149 had three phenolic acids in which gallic acid was maximum Water soaked seeds of the above mentioned cultivars gave similar results in which GA was maximum in most of them followed by TA, VA, Chl-A and Caf-A. Water extract of seeds showed several water-soluble phenolic acids such as TA, GA, PCat-A, FA, Chl-A, CA. Among them, P-Cat-A (592.05 μg/g) and FA (147.52 μg/g) were present in good amount. In Ayurvedic system of medicine, an alternative system of medicine practised mainly in India, leaves of CeA are used along with some other herbs as medhya drugs for memory enhancement and as promoter of strength and digestive power. In the present study, we have tried to establish the relation ship between the two of the properties of this plant. That is, spatial learning and memory enhancing property and its effect on overall body weight growth in neonatal and adult rats. The present study was conducted in \u0000neonatal (7day old) and adult (2.5 month old) rats. Both the groups of rats were fed with 2, 4 and 6ml/kg body of fresh leaf extract of CeA for 2, 4 and 6 weeks. During the treatment period the body weight of rats were noted at the end of every week. The body weight gained by the rats was compared with the spatial learning and memory enhancing effects of CeA on these rats reported earlier. The results showed a dose and duration dependent significance increase in the body weight gain in rats treated with CeA. This increase in the body weight was seen only in those groups were there was significant increase in spatial learning performance and enhanced memory retention power. This indicates that, there is a relationship between the spatial learning and memory enhancing effect of CeA and the body weight gain in rats.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124173182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
