Yet, testing of the performance of such changes, in particular at large scales, often needs significant investments. Crop models are widely used tools to quantify the effects of agronomic decisions on cropping systems and to identify the most promising areas for their advancement and implementation. Here in this study we quantify the impacts of individual and combined change in management scenarios including changes in (i) rates of nitrogen application, (ii) supplementary irrigation and (iii) new cultivar (with higher radiation use efficiency) on maize cropping systems over Africa based on 30 years (1980-2010) of climate, soil and management information obtained from global datasets at 0.5° x 0.5° spatial resolution. The crop model SIMPLACE was used in this study and it was tested against FAO statistics to evaluate the model performance under the current management conditions with traditional cultivars and average nitrogen application rates of <10 kg N ha-1. The model results showed that the combined changes in crop management could improve the range of maize yield from 1.2 t ha-1 to 2.9 t ha-1 over the study period in Africa. The magnitude of the yield improvement is country and scenario specific. The largest maize yield improvements were obtained in the combined innovations rather than individual practices in particular for the supplementary irrigation. We conclude that it is essential to implement combined technology packages to fill the gap between attainable and current yield in Africa and that will require appropriate incentives, and investment in extension services, fertilizer distribution networks and farmer capacity strengthening. We also need to combine the results with a robust economic model to evaluate the benefits and risks of the required investments for such changes in crop management.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125960714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growth, performance and strategies of the retail industry driven by JSE-listed supermarket chains therefore has important implications for suppliers and, in turn, for the development trajectory of agro-processing and light manufacturing industries. However, costly trading terms and stringent requirements limit the participation of suppliers in supermarket supply chains. This paper tracks the performance, investment and growth strategies of supermarket chains in South Africa between 2010 and 2016. Key findings reveal that although the formal supermarket industry has grown significantly over the past six years (measured by investments in assets and real turnover), it has remained relatively concentrated with only a handful of main players. Local supermarkets are also expanding their investments into the rest of Africa in search of new markets. The paper further evaluates the implications of supermarket procurement strategies on the ability of local suppliers to participate in supermarket supply chains. It highlights a wide range of constraints that suppliers face in accessing supermarket shelf space. To increase participation of local suppliers, the study recommends better designed and more sustainable supplier development programmes. It also recommends the implementation of a retail code of conduct to curb uneven balances of power and to promote transparency in procurement procedures and trading terms.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129012132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study compares financial performance of major GMO food companies to other industries. Findings indicate that GMO companies had an average higher return on equity but also a higher level of risk. In addition, the study presents positive and negative perspectives toward GMO foods, along with a discussion of the risks and opportunities. Agricultural studies indicate that applying GMO technology is likely the most effective way to feed many of the world's hungry. In addition, research supports the safety and nutritional benefits of GMO food products. However, concerns expressed by GMO opponents have been effective in limiting GMO acceptance by the public. Research indicates that the inconsistency between negative public opinion and positive scientific evidence supporting GMO crops is at least partly the result of misrepresentations about GMOs. The ultimate acceptance or rejection of GMO foods will greatly affect food producers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129542471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process is initiated when soil particles are detached from its original configuration by erosive forces such as rainfall. The soil particles may then be transported by overland flow into nearby rivers and oceans. Current developments in geographic information systems (GIS) make it possible to model complex spatial information. A GIS is used in this project to determine how soil erosion potential varies throughout a watershed. A method was developed in this research which combines the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The USLE calculates long-term average annual soil loss by multiplying six specific factors which describe the watershed characteristics such as rainfall, soil types, slope, and vegetation cover. The GIS is used to store the USLE factors as individual digital layers and multiplied together to create a soil erosion potential map. This combination provides a way to assess soil erosion potential of an area with existing data sources.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122579805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, there was more than eightfold increase in mechanical draft force and reduction in live one by 90%. In 2010, the value of gross output in constant prices was higher than in 1949 by 113.2%, final output – by 186.7% and market output – by 370.9%. It was noted that there is a positive correlation between equipment in the draft force and the value of agricultural production. Its strength, when considering only the mechanical draft force, was higher as compared to the total draft force taken into account. The correlation is the strongest when the market output is taken as a measure of agricultural production and the weakest for the gross output. Various efforts and approaches through government interventions have been implemented to ensure the continuity of paddy production in this area. However, there are different factors that have negative impacts on paddy production including climatic factors. Therefore, with the direct components of production such as land, labor, and technology, this study uses climatic factors and government intervention to examine the influence of these factors of production on the paddy production in this area. Based on the time series data from 1981 to 2010, this study conducted the multiple log linear Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression by considering the Cobb-Douglas production function model. The major units of production, such as land, labor, and technology, have a statistically positive relationship with paddy production. Among the climatic variables, rainfall and the number of rainy days show a statistically significant and positive relationship but temperature shows a negative relationship with paddy production. The factors of external intervention such as government subsidies and market forces also show a statistically significant and positive relationship with paddy production. To ensure the improvement of paddy production as well as to minimize the effects of climatic change, government intervention should be continued in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125410028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results should be of interest to policy makers, investors, and other stakeholders. An important part of personal and societal wellness is the issue of a healthy diet. Meat provides essential nutrients, notably protein, B vitamins, vitamin D, and iron. Eating a proper diet has been a concern from ancient times to the present. For example, the Bible story of Daniel, written about 540 B.C., describes the benefits of eating healthy food (Daniel 1:15). The meat industry is a major agricultural sector that plays an important economic role in many countries of the world. In light of the meat industry's important contributions to the economy and to people's health, great care should be given when developing public policies that affect the industry. Diverting corn crops to make biofuel, perhaps well motivated public policy when initiated, is now questionable.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128103019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
