We posit that concentration of knowledge and its use in companies for short term gains can lead to misguided economic behavior, crisis and insolvencies coupled with low probability of successful restructuring. In turn the success of restructuring is dependent on cohesive knowledge management while dispersed knowledge management can, at most, prolong the economic life of a company and not save it from demise. We analyze the impact and lack of impact that knowledge and its guided/misguided management can have on Romanian companies, ex ante and ex post insolvency procedures. We chose both an exploratory and explanatory case study approach of Romanian companies affected by economic crisis that underwent various insolvency stages, tracing the use of knowledge and its different practical deployment to the decision-making processes and their outcomes. We review the causes that lead to the economic crisis and subsequent insolvency contexts. We compare the use of knowledge by the companies’ leadership against similar cases in other jurisdictions and we identify patterns of successful and unsuccessful application of knowledge management. Next, we investigate the effects of dispersed knowledge management in the early insolvency stages, focusing on the reorganization phase identifying gaps and discussing potential solutions.  The results suggest, as they apply to the researched case studies, that both concentrated and dispersed knowledge management within distressed companies do not lead to positive outcomes and a balanced approach to knowledge management is more prone to provide effective and viable restructuring. The article explores several knowledge management theories and various academic research as they relate to the decision-making process for Romanian companies in distress and expands the academic universe as it relates to knowledge treatment in economic crisis. The results of our research and the potential solutions discussed can be further developed into a best practice guidance or a practical model to be used both by academics and practitioners as well.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132003033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The issue is relevant because the raise of cryptocurrencies as an economic asset has been occurring in a time in which KM gained social prominence. And also because the evolution of cryptocurrencies should be also related to knowledge about their own value. Within this context, we present a literature review on papers that exist in the SCOPUS database about cryptocurrencies and KM. After analysing those papers, the general idea is that KM is very far away from the cryptocurrency phenomenon; the reason may be that it is very difficult to use the more common models available on KM to analyse cryptocurrencies; also the economic and social agents that might be interested in KM are not those who invest in cryptocurrencies; finally, the data available on cryptocurrencies are mostly speculative, and it is very difficult to make any scientific study on them. These conclusions may be of interest for the KM community at large, because they indicate a new subfield of research, and for practitioners, because they mean that there is not much science in the evolution of cryptocurrencies themselves. Finally, for policymakers, the findings mean the expanding the possibility of use of cryptocurrencies in societies may be extremely risky given their volatility and the lack of precise scientific knowledge about them. The paper is original because it relates to concepts that have only very seldom and scarcely put together.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133326555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The detailed objectives derive from analyzing the organization's interior models and environment. The methodology used in the article is a critical review of the literature, the method of deduction in the area of generating assumptions for discovery processes and creating opportunities in the context of creating knowledge models. The results will enable extracting the cognitive knowledge of strategic knowledge bases in the context of the organization's opportunities. Furthermore, this will result in research models detailing the organization's strategic activities in opportunities and knowledge management processes, along with the specification of the potential benefits of the processes carried out (utilitarian purpose). The research results will expand the understanding of the utilitarian nature of knowledge management processes and strategic theory.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132831850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the activity of communities functioning on the Internet reflects the organization of human communities in the offline space. The main aim of the research was to characterize the structures of cooperation groups that are formed around WikiProjects. The research question was: what is the structure of activity of Wikipedians in WikiProjects in chosen language versions of Wikipedia? The method used in the research is the content analysis method. The author calculated data thanks to the Wikipedia xTools. The numbers of participants involved in WikiProjects were analysed by referring to the Dunbar number concept and the cultural determinants of cooperation, thus referring to the masculinity index (MAS) according to Hofstede. Research has shown that WikiProject members show similarities to the layered community formation proposed by Dunbar. The sizes of groups of active editors are closer to these values. As the WikiProjects group grows, the ratio of declared participants to active participants decreases. The production of value in virtual communities, the ability to work together as a team in physical isolation, is becoming increasingly important. The results of the research may be significant to the knowledge management specialists and virtual communities practitioners.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115545562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While these technologies enhance productivity, they also present new challenges for businesses regarding manufacturing methods, sources of competitive advantage, and market structures, impacting how work is conducted. Workplace transformations are happening at a faster pace than anticipated, raising important questions for employees, business decision-makers, and policymakers. We conducted an exploratory study to analyze the realism of the Knowledge Economy model's perspective on workplace changes. The study was based on a non-exhaustive literature review and an empirical study conducted with professionals from companies in Portugal belonging to several sectors of activity. Our research leads to the conclusion that the Knowledge Economy model, through technological innovation, has shaped the quality of work, bringing new insights and self-engagement of employees. However, digitalization might induce urgent needs for reskilling and upskilling. Therefore, it is essential to request such a challenge not only to employees but also to organizations and public authorities by investing in lifelong education and training and implementing policies, actions, and tools to facilitate the digital economy transition. Such proactive measures will propel the labor market towards greater availability of decent work, foster a more inclusive society, and promote social well-being and economic prosperity.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116268718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engineering consulting firms are knowledge-intensive firms that offer specialised services in the provision of independent expert knowledge in the fields of engineering, science and other related areas in the public and private sectors, infrastructure, and construction sectors Although knowledge management is widely acknowledged as a strategic enabler in engineering consulting firms, most initiatives fail, making a knowledge management readiness assessment essential before implementation. The target population was Zutari’s permanently employed technical professionals. Stratified and systematic sampling methods were applied to select a sample of 285 technical professionals. A questionnaire was used to gather quantitative data. The assessment model of Aydin and Tasci (2005) was used to assign readiness levels for the critical success factors under investigation. The findings reveal that the level of knowledge management awareness among Sutaria staff is quite high, even though knowledge management is practised informally. A knowledge management readiness strategy is suggested to get Sutaria to the expected level of readiness. Knowledge management is widely acknowledged as a strategic enabler by employees in Zutari, with information technology currently the only critical success factor at the expected level of readiness. A knowledge management strategy is suggested to assist Sutaria in achieving the expected level of readiness. Further research could test the effectiveness of the readiness strategy in different contexts using mixed methods research. This research will add new knowledge to the body of knowledge in the engineering consulting sector and help firms planning to implement knowledge management.  Not many studies have been conducted to test the organisational readiness for knowledge management in engineering consulting firms. As specific objectives, we intend to understand the international assignments motivations and to explore how the international assignment can impact the employee's career development. Through an exploratory case study approach, a qualitative research methodology was used to collect data, using a semi-structured interview with a group of stakeholders from an international company (five expatriates and two organisational representatives of expatriations process) in order to answer to the following research questions which factors contribute to the acquisition and transfer of knowledge of expatriates in companies? and how does the acquisition and transfer of knowledge of expatriates in companies take place? The interviews were verbatim transcript and data analysed according to thematic analysis procedures. Our findings show that expatriates are simultaneously agents of knowledge acquisition and knowledge transferring. In addition, expatriates have many high expectations about the useful of their knowledge transferring to home company, specifically in their organisational career evolution and for business innovation and competitiveness. Using the findings, on the one hand international companies can improve human resources system to fit their support practices to needs and expectations of their expatriates after return to home company. On the other hand, the knowledge brought from expatriation, helps organisations at the strategic level through market knowledge and enables the implementation of international innovation human resources policies and practices, contributing to the globalisation of the company. Some conclusions to the contributes to the knowledge management will be highlighted in the last part of the paper.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121200719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper attempts to answer the question of how this fact affects business relationships. A survey method was used with 47 companies in Poland that conduct remote negotiations or remote business talks. The respondents were company managers who participate in both traditional and remote negotiations. The conceptual framework for the study was the model of negotiation as recurring events in the history of a relationship (Thomas, Manrodt, Eastman, 2015). The limitations of the study derived from the specificity of the research group: the respondents were from Poland, and the perspective of small and medium-sized companies was taken into account, whereas perhaps the perspective of large companies would have been different. The conclusion outlines the potential of remote negotiation compared to traditional negotiation and implications of conducting remote negotiations.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124688570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Matsuadira (2010) defined the complex of organisational values (the ethos) as knowledge (intangible) assets for knowledge creating companies. I suggest that this leads us back to R.K. Merton’s theory of the normative structure of science and the ethos of science. The challenge is to ask whether we can we talk about the applicability of the norms proposed by Merton to the case of knowledge management in knowledge creating companies, or rather there will be some evident deviations and counter-norms. It is well known that the value of universalism is contested by particularism or that of “communism” by the secrecy of research. My hypothesis is that at methodological level the technical norms of knowledge testing and evaluation are universal and globalizable, but in the practical context of the action the guiding values and the mores of knowledge production are local and particular, i.e. depending on various social and cultural factors. The principle of glocalization (“think globally and act locally”) should, therefore, be applied.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129400919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The speed and intensity of changes mean that enterprises are forced to look for the most effective flexible actions to meet market conditions. The dynamic capabilities of enterprises are reflected in the dimensions of flexibility, which have different speeds and are conditioned in different ways, e.g., through the level of knowledge management in the enterprise. The article is based on the review of international literature using the science mapping method in the area of knowledge management and organizational flexibility, as well as the results of the research conducted on a group of manufacturing companies. The aim of the article is to indicate the level of knowledge management in manufacturing enterprises and its impact on selected dimensions of flexibility in the areas of organizational activity. The study is based on the results of the research on a group of 355 Polish enterprises, which was carried out in 2022. The author's questionnaire was used during the study. The results of the study were the basis for the analysis, which indicated the level of knowledge management and the level of organizational flexibility in manufacturing enterprises. The analysis also made it possible to indicate whether there are dependencies between the level of knowledge management and the level of flexibility in the organizational dimensions of companies' operations. The novelty of the article is the indication of recommendations for the increase in the level of knowledge management in order to enhance the flexible actions necessary in an extremely turbulent organizational environment.","PeriodicalId":107011,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Knowledge Management","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130611155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
