This case study focuses on the impact of drug abusers in their early phase of marriage (from 1 to 5 years of marriage) which is still lack of emphasized. The objective of the study was to explore the experiences of women who lived in at-risk households after being married to drug addicts. The case study used a qualitative method. A total of ten women were selected as informants using snowball sampling. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews. All informants were divorced before they reached five years of marriage. The experiences in their early phase of marriage have shown that all informants were: i) often beaten by their husbands; ii) worried about their personal safety due to their husbands’ behaviors who are also involved in other crimes; iii) facing dual-burden as their husbands did not provide any basic needs in the households; and iv) feeling uncomfortable during sexual intercourse due to their husbands forced and rough behavior. Although marriage can be a protective factor in avoiding social problems, however the drug abuse issues at an early phase of marriage, especially within 1 to 5 years, can cause risks and conflicts in the households. The study implies the importance of specific interventions for women, whose husbands are drug-addicts, to remain alert and be aware of the risks of domestic abuse. It is also important for these young mothers to have exposure on the roles of existing social support agencies and experts who can be consulted when dealing with drug abuse.","PeriodicalId":106061,"journal":{"name":"EDUCATUM Journal of Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133163435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The true experimental design used consisted of experimental and control groups in which experimental group received the intervention while the control group had no intervention given. The instrument used was the standardized Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) developed by the Department of Education- Bureau of Learning Delivery to measure the significance of Library Hour Program in improving pupils word reading levels. T-test were carried out to answer the research objectives of the study. There were 72 grade five pupils who participated in the experimental group. Pupils that can read at-level text was determined through the Group Screening Test. The pupils with scores less than fourteen (14) out of twenty (20) literal, inferential, and critical questions were subjected to pretest and posttest and served as the experimental group in the study. The pretest and posttest determined the reading level of pupils whether under frustration, instructional, and independent. Phil-IRI graded passages were used in this study. These graded passages were given by the Department of Education and were used to assess the reading performances of Grade Three to Six in the elementary grades nationwide. The library hour as a reading intervention program was specifically used in Alfonso Lista Central School as it was included in their daily classroom programs for thirty (30) minutes a day. After five months of conducting the intervention program, the findings revealed that during the pretest, pupils were assessed under the Instructional level. It also showed that during the posttest, pupils were found to be under the Independent Level. The results showed that Library Hour as an intervention program to improve the word reading of grade five pupils was effective. This also revealed that regardless of sex, Library Hour was found very effective. It was then recommended to include the Library Hour in the daily classroom program in schools as it was proven useful to increase pupils’ reading ability.","PeriodicalId":106061,"journal":{"name":"EDUCATUM Journal of Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124952729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional survey design was conducted with 80 HF patients. The average age of participants was 61.39 years old (M = 61.39, SD = 15.88). Chinese version of Self-care Heart Failure Index version 6.2 and the World Health Organization Quality of life-BREF were utilized in this study. Pearson’s correlation and t-test were tested to run the analysis. Current findings suggested that the construct of confident to conduct self-care is significantly correlated positively with quality of life (r = .41, p<0.01). There is a significant difference in self-care management between genders [t(78) = -2.94, p=.00] and illness comorbidities [t(78) = -2.07, p=.04]. Hence, it is suggested that element of confidence is one of the important factors to be considered in future self-care interventions. Through this study, researchers and health-care providers could deduce effective interventions and education considering genders and illness comorbidities in order to improve self-care behaviours and quality of life.","PeriodicalId":106061,"journal":{"name":"EDUCATUM Journal of Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130518221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, this problem has been often associated with Malays compared to other ethnics. This study aims to identify the profiles and experiences of drug use and crime among Malay offenders. The study was conducted using a quantitative cross-sectional survey. A total of 301 Malay offenders who were charged for drug-related offences and serving their sentences in the Malaysian Prison Department were selected to participate in the study. The study has found that the majority of offenders involved in drug use and crime offences are young people aged 21-39 years old, unmarried, attained at least lower and/or upper secondary education SRP/SPM, employed prior to custody, and had income below than RM3,850 per month (B40). Based on their experiences of drug use, most offenders reported that they obtain drugs from the dealers and the average age of first drug use is between 30 to 35 years old. Methamphetamine is a popular drug used by majority of Malay offenders, and it is due to incredible enjoyment and peer pressure. The study also reported offenders spent between RM50 and RM100 to buy drugs in a day. Based on the experiences of crime, most of offenders reported to commit crimes at least twice a week and preferred to commit crime alone than in groups. The type of crime offences reported by most of Malay offenders are drug dealing, theft and burglary instead of drug use. Findings of this study have implications for the implementation of effective intervention and management offenders in terms of providing counseling services, skills, education, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation among offenders.","PeriodicalId":106061,"journal":{"name":"EDUCATUM Journal of Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126275644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, this study was designed to determine the level of implementation of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the Schools Division of Isabela. It utilized the descriptive-correlational method involving fourteen (14) districts. The main instrument for data collection is the survey questionnaire while weighted mean, Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis H-test were carried out to answer the research objectives of the study. Results of the study showed that implementation of ALS program in public schools in the Division of Isabela are commendable. They perceived the implementation of ALS program generally as very good. The data showed that majority of them revealed that relevance of instructional materials use during ALS sessions was outstanding. They affirmed that facilities and equipment were always available, enough, relevant, with quality, accessible and safe in the learning centers. They also perceived that financial resources appropriation, availability, and sufficiency exist in the ALS program implementation. Moreover, majority of the respondents revealed that establishing linkages, participation of stakeholders such as parents and government officials and attitude of ALS implementers were very good. There are significant differences in some areas of the factors in the implementation of Alternative Learning System. On the basis of the results of the study, it is then recommended that ALS Implementers consistently build and maintain positive working relationship with the barangay officials and other stakeholders to win their full cooperation in the implementation of the ALS programs and projects. Furthermore, the learners are advised to be guided accordingly and comply with the regular attendance as scheduled by the assigned ALS implementer in the ALS centers, and other linkages and partners may work hand and hand to extend financial support as needed in the implementation of the ALS program. Nevertheless, there should be a proper monitoring and evaluation tool designed by the Department of Education (DepEd) to identify priorities and needs and ensure proper technical assistance to ALS implementers in the field. For further research, this study can be replicated in the higher level utilizing other parameters.","PeriodicalId":106061,"journal":{"name":"EDUCATUM Journal of Social Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121231774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
