The sensor need not determine the exact resonant frequency or quality factor, and offers high sensitivity, accuracy and dynamic range. It is also insensitive to read range variation and orientation. Being a magnetically coupled near-field system, it is fundamentally more robust against clutter compared to propagating wave counterparts. An equivalent circuit analysis in conjunction with circuit simulation and experiments is presented.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128661542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The RFID EPC Gen2 technology is the de facto standard in such scenarios like retail. However, covering a large surface with RFID antennas to implement a full context-aware system requires a huge investment. We present the design, implementation and evaluation of a helical antenna based on a low-cost standard industrial spring. With a simple fixation to the ground plane and a simple matching mechanism, the antenna achieves a gain of 6 dBi. We evaluate the performance of the proposed RFID reader antenna in real retail store environments.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123359855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model improves on previous works which are limited to evaluating circuits with only a single rectifying element or a single frequency excitation. Validation has been obtained through the simulation of circuits with ideal components which show good agreement for harvesters with up to 6 diodes along with measurements of a 5.8 GHz voltage doubler which show agreement to within 5.6%. The relationships between the number of stages and output loads is discussed, and the theoretical maximum efficiency for a harvester with N ideal rectifying elements is presented.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115247958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This testbed leverages low cost silicon germanium (SiGe) integrated circuits intended for the satellite television market to provide an experimental capability for backscatter experimentation in the 10.0 GHz to 11.1 GHz band. The integrated wideband bow-tie antennas have a 10 dB return loss bandwidth of 9.63-13.15 GHz and a gain of 6 dBi. The transmitter consists of a single-chip frequency synthesizer and buffer amplifier with an output power of -2 dBm. The receive downconverter consists of an integrated LNA, mixer, and LO frequency synthesizer, with an RF frequency range of 10.0 GHz to 13.0 GHz and an IF frequency range of 250 MHz to 3250 MHz. The downconverter's measured conversion gain is 36 dB with a noise figure of 7 dB. The IF signal processing leverages a Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) to support arbitrary backscatter modulation schemes such as ASK, PSK, or QAM backscatter with an IF bandwidth up to 50 MHz. We found good agreement between the measured and simulated free-space path loss at ranges of up to 4.1 m in a laboratory environment, and demonstrate the use of this testbed in a BPSK backscatter configuration at a rate of 10 Mbps.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126333754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proof is then verified by the server, which processes the tags' data in the system. However, designing a grouping-proof protocol is challenging for two reasons. Firstly, in some cases, the server that authenticates the tags is offline during the scanning process, thus the tags' data need to be assembled in a valid grouping-proof to be authenticated later. Secondly, a number of recent grouping-proof protocols are either prone to attacks, or they are not efficient in terms of performance. In this paper, we present an offline two rounds grouping-proof protocol that provides immunity against well-known attacks on RFID protocols and improves tag's memory and computing performance. We analysed our protocol using a mechanical formal analysis tool called Scyther, which did not find any feasible attack(s). Finally, an implementation of the proposed protocol is conducted to measure the tag's memory space and computing time cost using an IAIK UHF RFID tag emulator.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128249629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Activity recognition, navigation at \"shelf\" level, geofencing, process monitoring and process control are among the envisioned services that will yield numerous applications in various domains. In principle, the proposed technique applies to many types of low-power transmitters, including wireless sensors and RFID tags, both active and passive. Only when requested, each gateway node (or listener) forwards the compressed physical layer samples of packets to a server, which decodes the packets using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques; this functionality could be described as selective application of multi-user MIMO with a distributed receiver array. Packets that have adequate SINR at a gateway are decoded, i.e., captured, and their waveforms are reconstructed and subtracted from stored samples; this subtraction is interference cancellation (IC). After IC, weaker packets may be revealed and decoded by the gateway, enabling successive IC (SIC). The diversity gain of multi-gateway reception provides higher SNR to packets that are not decodable at any gateway, thereby extending range. The spatial multiplexing capability of MIMO enables packets that have too much interference at the gateways to be decoded at the server, thereby supporting energy saving transmit-only strategies. The selectivity or \"on demand\" feature lowers the fronthaul cost of sending samples to the server. This paper presents preliminary simulation and experimental performance results and overviews the various design concerns of On Demand Network MIMO, such as synchronization, spreading, SIC performance, gateway deployment, and medium access control (MAC).","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124985050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we demonstrate how fine-scale orientation can be estimated from a multi-antenna backscatter tag. Three basic orientation changes - tag roll, pitch and yaw - were considered, where roll and pitch maneuvers were successfully identified from the direction of phase rotation. Moreover, an inclination of 5° in roll and pitch maneuvers was successfully identified by measuring the phase difference with 15% and 8% error respectively. The analysis can be extended to any amount of inclination.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129758020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system is designed to overcome the limits of standard RF harvesters (namely low output voltage). This objective is obtained with an extra DC/DC converter that provides an extra voltage boost, with less than 10 nW of power consumption. The accurate sub-threshold analysis of this converter allowed a start-up voltage as low as 200 mV, without compromising the overall power efficiency. The final system is intended to provide an output voltage high enough to power standard common loads (ex. microcontroller) and, more in general, any IoT wireless sensor node, with a limited amount of received power. This is confirmed by experimental results: an output voltage above 1.2 V is obtained starting from a received power of about -24 dBm. The step-up converter area is only 230 μm × 375 μm.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"370 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126366219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
