Existing schemes for 2D indoor localization have achieved impressing accuracy. In this paper we propose an accurate 3D localization scheme for objects. Our scheme leverages spatial domain phase difference to estimate the height of objects which is inspired by the phase-based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) height determination theory. We further leverage a density-based spatial clustering method to choose the most likely position and show that it improves the accuracy. Our localization method does not need any reference tags. Only one antenna is required to move in a known way in order to construct the synthetic arrays to implement the locating system. We present experimental results from an indoor office environment with EPC C1G2 passive tags and a COTS RFID reader. Our 3D experiments demonstrate a spatial median error of 0.24 m. This novel 3D localization scheme is a simple, yet promising, solution. We believe that it is especially applicable for both portable readers and transport vehicles.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123410658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It becomes even more important when sensor data has to be read at high data rates with low robustness modulation schemes. In this paper, our goal is to increase the RFID read rates for different modulation schemes at various Signal to Noise Ratios (SNRs). We propose and evaluate a selected subset of improvements, which can be implemented purely on the reader side and conform to the standard. First, we compare various combinations of clock recovery and bit decoding strategies. The results show, that the performance of individual combinations varies with the uplink encoding and SNR. The overall read rate can be improved if multiple combinations are used simultaneously. Second, we introduce and evaluate a basic soft-decision approach, which attempts to correct bit errors based on the calculated bit correlation scores. Overall, we can improve the read rates in our simulations by up to 31%.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124832582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we provide a survey on recent developments in the field of UWB-RFID by discussing the main advantages and open issues in providing high positioning accuracy with energy autonomous devices. In particular, we propose a novel solution to the reader-to-reader collisions and tag collisions in multi-reader systems, using the concept of bit tracking [1]. Towards this objective, we propose the multi-reader RFID tag identification using bit tracking (MRTI-BT) algorithm which allows concurrent tag identification, by neighboring RFID readers, as opposed to time-consuming scheduling. First, MRTI-BT identifies tags exclusive to different RFIDs, concurrently. Second, the concept of bit tracking and the proposed parallel identification property are leveraged to reduce the identification time compared to the state-of-the-art. Our simulation results exhibit considerable performance improvement with 113% reduction in the identification time, on the average, compared to Season [2].","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116477141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, for many applications RFID tags are considered too expensive compared to the alternative of a printed bar code, which has hampered widespread adoption of RFID technology. To overcome this price barrier, our work leverages the unique electromagnetic emissions generated by nearly all electronic and electromechanical devices as a means to individually identify them. This tag-less method of radio frequency identification leverages previous work showing that it is possible to classify objects by type (i.e. phone vs. TV vs. kitchen appliance, etc). A core question is whether or not the electromagnetic emissions from a given model of device, is sufficiently unique to robustly distinguish it from its peers. We present a low cost method for extracting the EM-ID from a device along with a new classification and ranking algorithm that is capable of identifying minute differences in the EM signatures. Results show that devices as divers as electronic toys, cellphones and laptops can all be individually identified with an accuracy between 72% and 100% depending on device type. While not all electronics are unique enough for individual identifying, we present a probability estimation model that accurately predicts the performance of identifying a given device out of a population of both similar and dissimilar devices. Ultimately, EM-ID provides a zero cost method of uniquely identifying, potentially billions of electronic devices using their unique electromagnetic emissions.","PeriodicalId":105916,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124094560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
