The technical standard for the transmission system was established in 1998. The system provides an information bit rate of 52 Mbps, which is sufficient for broadcasting true HDTV programs. It can handle multiple MPEG2 transport streams. The system supports multiple modulation schemes such as trellis coded 8PSK(TC8PSK), QPSK and BPSK. These modulation schemes can be selected and/or used simultaneously. Accordingly, broadcasters sharing one satellite channel can select modulation schemes suitable for their own services independently from each other. An adaptive adjustment of the search window for the block-matching algorithm (BMA) with a variable block size is presented to reduce the computational complexity of full search BMA (FSBMA). The size of the search window is adjusted by using the block similarity and the displaced block difference (DBD). The proposed DIS system performs motion estimation using 1-bit planes which are extracted from a video sequence. This motion estimation technique can be realized using only Boolean functions which have significantly reduced computational complexity, while the accuracy of motion estimation is maintained. In the second part of this paper, a median-based motion correction scheme is proposed which is robust to various irregular conditions such as moving objects and intentional panning. The system is capable of supporting CCDs with image size from VGA (640/spl times/480) to SXGA (1280/spl times/960), progressive and interlaced type scanning, and color filters of primary RGB and complementary MGCY signals. Based on a one-dimensional processing element (PE) array and two data-interlacing shift-register arrays, the proposed VLSI architecture can efficiently reuse data to decrease external memory accesses and save the pin counts. It also achieves 100% hardware utilization and a high throughput rate.
