Sufficient osteoporosis knowledge by healthcare workers is essential to guaranteeing that they possess the abilities and skills to treat patients with osteoporosis effectively. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness of osteoporosis among medical health workers, in addition to defining associated factors related to knowledge levels. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among healthcare workers in hospitals and primary healthcare centers in Al Najaf Governorate from May 1st, 2022, to March 1st, 2023. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data, including the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT) score. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: A total of 343 healthcare workers participated in this study. Their mean age was 32.45 years. Most participants had average and good knowledge (50% and 37%, respectively). Regarding awareness, 51.6% knew that calcium supplements alone cannot prevent bone loss, 16.9% identified that osteoporosis does not cause pain before a fracture, 44.3% knew that not all types of physical activity are useful for osteoporosis patients, and only 19.3% were aware that personal risk factors could predict the occurrence of the disease. Conclusions: Most healthcare workers have average knowledge of osteoporosis. There is a significant gap in knowledge among the participants regarding symptoms, risk factors, and treatment availability.","PeriodicalId":105471,"journal":{"name":"Al-Rafidain Journal of Medical Sciences ( ISSN 2789-3219 )","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141920131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Densah drills, with their unique design, expand the ridge by densifying bone in a reverse, non-cutting mode. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of sagittal piezosurgery, which involves cutting bone to the full implant depth and then expanding it using osseodensification drills. We use this technique to expand narrow alveolar bones and simultaneously place dental implants in the maxillary and mandibular arches. Methods: Fourteen patients received 31 dental implants. The maxillary arch received 19, and the mandible received 12 dental implants. This study will include patients who have narrow alveolar bone ridges (2.5–4 mm). After marking the implant sites with a pilot drill, we used a piezoelectric surgery tip to cut the alveolar crest to the depth of the planned dental implant. We then sequentially used Versah Drills, accompanied by extensive irrigation using cooled, sterile normal saline, and finally inserted the implant into the subcrestal level. Results: This study revealed a significant difference in alveolar ridge width immediately after the procedure, and the significant change in the mandible was slightly higher than that in the maxillary arch. However, all implants in both jaws achieved successful osseointegration. Conclusions: The alveolar ridge width changed a lot more in the mandible than in the maxillary arch after the procedure. These two strategies work well together to properly and simply expand severely atrophied alveolar ridges without affecting bone healing or the osseointegration process.","PeriodicalId":105471,"journal":{"name":"Al-Rafidain Journal of Medical Sciences ( ISSN 2789-3219 )","volume":"16 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141926026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The choice of anesthesia method for cesarean sections among preeclamptic women is still debated. Objective: To compare the outcomes of spinal and general anesthesia in a cesarean section among preeclamptic women. Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Al-Imam Al-Sajjad Hospital/Al-Najaf Health Directorate from February 2021 to September 2023. Women undergoing cesarean sections due to severe preeclampsia were enrolled in the spinal or general anesthesia group. Data on maternal age, gestational age at delivery, parity, Apgar scores, maternal mortality and perinatal mortality were recorded. The background characteristics and outcomes were compared between both groups. We excluded women with mild preeclampsia, multiple pregnancies, other pregnancy medical disorders, gestational age < 32 weeks, cases of eclampsia, and general anesthesia following spinal anesthesia failure. Results: The general anesthesia group had a significantly lower Apgar score at 1 minute than the spinal anesthesia group (27.3% and 57.4%, p=0.006), and at 5 minutes (15.2% and 37.03%, p=0.005). The study groups showed no significant difference regarding maternal and perinatal mortality. Proper recommendations and guidelines should be applied to control and reduce exposure. Objective: To assess pharmacists' knowledge and practice regarding the safe handling of anticancer drugs. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at seven major hospitals in Baghdad City, Iraq, from December 2023 to February 2024. A pre-designed questionnaire was given to pharmacists who handled anticancer drugs in chemotherapy units. The questionnaire comprises sociodemographic data, knowledge of the safe handling of cytotoxic drugs and thoughts about exposure and risk, practices for safely handling cytotoxic drugs, and challenges for safely handling cytotoxic drugs. Results: A total of 126 pharmacists were enrolled in the study. Less than half of the participants (46%) received training on anticancer drugs. While more than a third (42.9%) of the pharmacists were handling more than 100 cytotoxic preparations weekly, the total knowledge score was 7.14, while the total practice score was 73.36, with less than half of the pharmacists having good knowledge (44.44%) or practice (48.41%). Pharmacists who received training had significantly higher total practice scores than those who did not. Pharmacists with more than 100 weekly preparations were more knowledgeable than those with 50–99 preparations. Conclusions: The majority of participating pharmacists had fair to excellent knowledge and practice regarding the safe handling of cytotoxic medications. However, there were some gaps regarding important knowledge and practice issues. However, sex differences in coronary artery calcium (CAC) and its role in the detection of coronary artery stenosis remain controversial. Objective: To assess the impact of sex variation on coronary artery calcification and its efficacy in predicting coronary artery stenosis. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study including 230 consecutive patients with suspected CAD (120 men and 110 women) referred for coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). The study analyzed sex-based differences in the sensitivity and specificity of coronary artery calcification (CAC) for detecting moderate to severe stenosis across various coronary arteries. Results: The calcification scores 1-100 and 101-<400 were slightly more frequent in men (25% and 10%, respectively) than women (20.91% and 7.27%, respectively); however, the differences were not significant. For the left anterior descending artery (LAD), men showed slightly higher sensitivity and specificity (69.23% and 81.48%, respectively) than women (61.9% and 79.78%, respectively). For the left circumflex artery (LCX), men showed relatively higher sensitivity (68.75%) and lower specificity (89.42%) than women (50% and 98.81%, respectively). For the right coronary artery (RCA), women showed relatively higher sensitivity and specificity (75% and 93.4%, respectively) than men (50% and 91.82%, respectively). Conclusions: While the CAC has a relatively high specificity and low sensitivity in the detection of coronary artery disease, there is no difference in the score between men and women. When comparing vessels, women exhibit greater RCA calcification sensitivity and specificity than men, whereas for LAD, the opposite is true.","PeriodicalId":105471,"journal":{"name":"Al-Rafidain Journal of Medical Sciences ( ISSN 2789-3219 )","volume":"115 37","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141819906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has a case fatality rate of up to 40%. Animal sacrifices during the Eid-Al-Adha period are a common religious tradition in the country. Since 2021, Iraq has been plagued by a continuous epidemic. Objectives: To investigate the upsurge of CCHF cases during the Eid-Al-Adha period in 2023 and determine the times of high incidence and related risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data derived from the Communicable Disease Control Center in Iraq during the period from June 19 to July 30, 2023, and included all laboratory-confirmed cases during the study period. The studied variables were categorized according to before, during and after the Eid period. The chi-square test and regression analysis were used to analyze the variables. Results: CCHF cases increased during the Eid period (118, compared to 63 before and 23 after). Slaughtering activities during the Eid period increased by more than 45%. Being a butcher and participating in slaughtering activities significantly contributed to the increase in cases during the Eid period. The only significant predictor identified was the presence of slaughtering activities before and after Eid, compared to the Eid period itself. Methods: This randomized controlled study included 56 patients indicated for surgical extraction of IMTM under local anesthesia. These patients were randomly assigned into two groups: a study group that included patients who received Tibrolin® postoperatively and a control group that did not. The predictor variable was whether to use SET or not. Pain measured by the pain numerical rating scale (NRS), facial swelling, and the degree of trismus were the outcome variables. The Arabic version of the Oral Health Impact Profile 5 (OHIP5-Ar) questionnaire was used to measure quality of life (QoL) on the day of surgery (day 1) and on days 3, 7, and 13. Results: The study group demonstrated significantly lower pain scores postoperatively on day 1 and a lesser degree of facial swelling on day 3 compared to the control group, while no significant differences were observed regarding the other time intervals. There were no significant differences in the degree of trismus or QoL between the two groups. Investigations help guide therapeutic intervention by exploring underlying causes. Hysteroscopy can identify and treat intrauterine pathologies such as adhesion, septum, and endometrial polyps. Laparoscopy has a diagnostic and therapeutic role in the pelvic cavity, including tubal blockage, pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, and polycystic ovaries. Objective: To evaluate the value of combined hystro-laparoscopic interventions in managing female infertility and to explore predictors for a successful pregnancy. Methods: A retrospective cohort study enrolled (142) eligible females who underwent hystro-laparoscopy. Participants' demographic criteria were recorded. Additionally, intraoperative interventions (hysteroscopic removal of the polyp and septum) and laparoscopic removal of pelvic adhesions, removal of the chocolate cyst, ovarian drilling and laparoscopic chromotubation). All patients were followed up for six months. Logistic regression and odd ratio were used to assess the intervention's reliability in predicting pregnancy. Results: Clinical pregnancy was reported in 48/142, with a success rate of 33.8%. Pregnant women had significantly lower ages and lived in urban areas. Laparoscopic adhesion removal and tubal block correction reliably predicted clinical pregnancy, with adjusted odds ratios (AOR) of 0.25; 95% CI (0.08–0.78) and 0.40; 95% CI (0.16-0.98), respectively. In a continuous effort to find effective treatments, the new candidates for AD therapy have the capacity to scavenge excessive levels of free radicals and inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Objectives: This study focuses on synthesizing and biologically evaluating novel hybrid compounds (1-3) as acetylcholine esterase inhibitors. Methods: The benzimidazole has been added and then coupled with coumaric acid, cinnamic acid, and lipoic acid as conjugates, which are expected to have dual action as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and antioxidants. The synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives (1-3) was accomplished and then characterized using 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. Additionally, their characteristics were assessed in vitro against the AChE enzyme. Results: The new compounds produced a potent inhibitory activity that may serve as a lead molecule for the synthesis of novel anti-AD molecules. Compound-1 has an inhibition percentage that is close to that of the authorized medication galantamine (95.386%), whereas compound-3 has the lowest inhibition percentage (88.647%). Menstruation is a key indicator of overall women's health. The COVID-19 vaccination has been associated with changes in the menstrual cycle. Objective: To evaluate the effects of COVID-19 vaccines on the menstrual cycle. Methods: This is a face-to-face interview-based cross-sectional study that recruited 403 vaccinated women with the COVID-19 vaccine who had normal MC before receiving the vaccine for at least six months in Mosul, Iraq, from February 1 to July 31, 2022. We asked the women about their menstrual cycle parameters before and after the vaccination. The results were analyzed statistically. Results: The most frequent age group among study participants was 20–34 years (52.9%). About half of women (58.3%) had received the Pfizer vaccine. 12.2% and 13.65% of women reported significant changes in their menstrual cycle following the first and second doses, respectively. These changes included irregularities in the cycle and modifications in the amount and duration of menses, and the Pfizer vaccine was significantly responsible for these changes. Conclusions: In a small number of women who had a normal menstrual cycle before vaccination, post-Covid-19 vaccination menstrual cycle changes occurred, and the reported changes were not critical. This result can reassure the community about the vaccine's impact on the menstrual cycle.","PeriodicalId":105471,"journal":{"name":"Al-Rafidain Journal of Medical Sciences ( ISSN 2789-3219 )","volume":"115 40","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141667725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
