The method involves preparing a dielectric frequency response signature (DFRS) from the DFR test on a transformer. The signature of the measured response is then compared with a modeled response of a transformer with a \"normal\" insulation structure and a library of signatures of known defects. Based on this comparison, it is possible to diagnose power factor defects in the insulation structure of the transformer under test.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. Compared with the flashover performance of the insulator samples in vacuum, it was found that the trap distribution could influence the flashover performance. Based on our investigations, the relationship between the trap distribution and the flashover performance was discussed. It seems that the trap distribution may be the better parameter to reflect the flashover performance, and that further more works are needed to set up the relationship between the trap and the flashover.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. The method combines the sensitivity of an online VHF PD (very high frequency partial discharge) measurement with the power of a time domain measurement.. Two measurements on running turbogenerators are presented: one on an 150 MVA generator without disturbances and. one on an 650 MVA turbo generator in a high disturbance environment. The paper shows that it is possible to detect and record partial discharges in an environment with disturbance pulses over 1000 times their size. Using frequency analysis a signal to noise ratio can be obtained, which can be used to determine the optimum measuring frequencies for online VHF PD measurements. Using typical time and frequency wave shape parameter extraction it is possible to separate the recorded pulses into PDs and disturbances.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. Investigated in the paper are the effects of the capacitive bulk-grading of the coaxial disc-type and post-type model spacers on the electric field along the insulator surface and on the corresponding surface breakdown voltage when the lightning impulse voltage is applied. It is obtained from the experimental work that the bulk-graded model spacers employed in the investigation stand for higher positive lightning impulse voltage by 10 to 25% than the ungraded model spacers, depending greatly on the manner of grading and model geometry.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. Therefore, it is important to detect defects, such as protrusions and particles, in time and to determine their risk for a possible breakdown. For on-line PD detection, the UHF method has proven to be a sensitive method. Unfortunately, the propagation path of the electromagnetic waves from the location of the defect to the UHF coupler influences the magnitude of the UHF signals: the UHF signals attenuate, mainly due to reflections at the different components. As a result, several UHF couplers are required to reach enough sensitivity. In this contribution a transmission line model has been used to estimate the signal reduction of each GIS component. This has been used to determine coupler locations to reach certain sensitivity, which has been verified using the CIGRE sensitivity check.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. In most cases these changes can be seen as a degradation of the insulation properties of particular power cables. In order to detect changes in the insulation at an early stage and to gain insight to the maximum service life of a power cable, predictive maintenance is often recommended and in several cases already in use. To enable predictive maintenance the need arises for structured condition assessment of the power cables, by the use of diagnostic techniques. While the actual aging processes generated by the interaction of partial discharges are not well understood at the present time, there has been much information of a qualitative nature gathered over the years. To support electrical engineers in the interpretation of diagnostic measurement results and recognition of aging processes in the insulation of power cables, linkage between specific insulation characteristic with the combined information as provided by quantities of the used diagnostics is necessary. Because of the large amount of components, the diversity of component types and measurement data, information systems are needed for storage, correlation and comparison of measurement data on specific components and specific component types. This contribution discusses the pitfalls and application of the combination of condition assessment, diagnostics and information systems applied to distribution power cables.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. One of the most common failure modes is attributable to the occurrence of dielectric breakdown at the cable-joint interface. Interfacial pressure is known to be a key factor in the interfacial breakdown strength: a high interfacial pressure leads to good dielectric breakdown strength whereas a lower pressure leads to poor long-term-performance.The present work shows the behavior of two different types of distribution cable joints: ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) based coldshrinkable cable joint and silicone rubber (SR) based coldshrinkable cable joint. Interfacial pressure was monitored for thermal cycles at three different temperatures: 75, 90 and 130/spl deg/C. The cycling protocol is based on an existing IEEE standard for cable joints for use with extruded dielectric cables rated 5-138 kV. A preliminary theoretical model has been developed and compared to the obtained data.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. Past research has shown that motor and generator operating parameters such as voltage, power output, gas pressure, and stator winding temperature can have an important impact on the PD levels, and thus must be controlled if useful trends in PD activity over time are to be obtained. Over the years, results have been collected that indicate humidity may also be a factor that needs to be monitored. In addition, some simple laboratory experiments have been performed to verify that humidity can change the PD. When applying online PD testing to assess stator winding insulation condition, users must be aware of the influence of humidity on the measured PD activity to properly interpret the results.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat. These tests were conducted using a conventional partial discharge detector (PDD), turbine generator analyzer (TGA) and partial discharge analyzer (PDA). Off-line PD measurements were performed using the PDD. Offline PD pulse from one 80 pF (or 500 pF) epoxy-mica coupler was measured with the PDA instrument at 3.81 kV, 4.76 kV and 6.6 kV. On-line PD pulses from the sensors were measured with the TGA and PDA instruments during normal operation. The PDD, TGA and PDA test results showed that internal discharge was detected from voids in the groundwall insulation. It was confirmed that the PDD, TGA and PDA measurements can be directly correlated with the pattern and magnitude of PD. The results of offline and online PD measurements were judged to be indicative of stator insulator in good condition for the seven large motors.","PeriodicalId":10532,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the the 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (Cat.
