Two new classes of bases, the scale-and-shear bases and the translation-and-shear bases, are derived to demonstrate the discretization process. Besides generalizing the current methods of generating time-frequency-concentrated ONBs, MT bases possess extra degrees of freedom that can be used to match a wider variety of signals.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126817858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A perfect reconstruction filter bank with bandwidths approximating the critical bands is presented. The orthogonality of the filter makes it possible to examine the masking effect with realistic signals. The tree structure of the filter bank makes it difficult to obtain well-attenuated stop-bands. The use of filters of different length solves this problem.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126847163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When point sources of different chemical-shift values are measured with varying gradient field, these points travel along different loci in the instantaneous frequency vs. time diagram. Following the locus of a chemical-shift component of interest, the spatial distribution of the component can be observed with a varying degree of confidence. Taking an average over the profiles obtained at different gradient field intensities, the spatial profile solely due to a chemical-shift component can be reconstructed if each profile is scaled to the same bandwidth.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"379 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124731876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the construction of the wavelet bases, an algebraic approach requiring only orthogonal matrix decompositions of the moment matrices and matrix-matrix multiplications is used. The FWT is executed on a dyadic tree of shuffle-like interconnections between the computational stages. These types of computation can be executed on a linear array of processors containing only adders and multipliers supported by a permutation network suited to VLSI and functioning as a shared memory.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114633815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of the application areas, established or potential, are common for both wavelets and fractals. This is significant for general nonstationarity detection. The properties of the continuous and discrete transforms are investigated, and the SNR expression is derived. It is shown that the Haar wavelet is optimum with respect to this criterion, but the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is shown to have some major drawbacks for this application. Various detection strategies are described and illustrated, showing that the WT is a powerful tool, even with very small SNR.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128806797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two methods to discretize the Gabor transform are studied from the viewpoint of controlling numerical properties: a Zak-transform-based method and a matrix method. Theoretical issues relating to the singular behavior of each are cited, and stabilization techniques are proposed. The validity of each technique is demonstrated by results of numerical experiments. It is concluded that stability and accuracy can usually be achieved in a digitally implemented Gabor transform by proper choice of algorithm and stabilization mechanism.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133855898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This representation is defined in terms of a slice of instantaneous higher-order moments of the signal, and forces the contribution of the auto terms to appear at fixed positions on the (T-F) plane, while the cross terms appear at positions that vary depending on the particular slice. The choice of the moment slice is not unique as long as it satisfies certain conditions. The consideration of different moment slices yields different T-F representations. The distributions corresponding to different moment slices cause only the parts due to the auto terms to add up, since their positions depend only on the signal parameters.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130101337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is based on the ability of the discrete polynomial transform (DPT) to estimate the parameters of a polynomial phase signal in the presence of other interfering signals. The parameters of one of the signals having been estimated, it can be filtered out from the composite signal. The procedure is then applied to the remainder, which contains a smaller number of components. In extensive testing it was found that the algorithm works very well in general. It is able to reliably separate multiple signals and to accurately estimate their parameters.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115464686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some properties of the AF of a linear signal space, its relations with other space representations, and the results obtained for some specific signal spaces are discussed. It is shown that the AF of a signal space describes the performance of the maximum likelihood (ML) range/Doppler estimator for a slowly fluctuating point target when a series of orthogonal signal pulses are transmitted. This multipulse estimator is more accurate than a conventional signal-pulse estimator since the AF of a linear signal space may have arbitrarily good thumbtack shape.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":105228,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124503552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
