Several IO pickups [ 1-31 have been proposed and demonstrated by the authors for read-only optical discs, magneto-optical discs or optical cards. In this paper, we propose a new IO device modulating focus spot intensity and demonstrate preliminary experimental results for a future application to an IO writing/reading head used in rewritable disc systems. Following the IO pickups previously reported [ 1-31, the IO modulator is constructed in a slab waveguide on a Si substrate because of its advantages such as excellent flatness, possibility of monolithic integration of photodiodes, compatibility with the IO pickups, low cost, etc. In order to modulate the focus spot intensity for writing data on the disc, electro-optic (EO) modulation is required provided grating components are used in the IO device, since power modulation of laser diode (LD) causes wavelength fluctuation which should be avoided because the gratings have wavelength dispersion. An EO polymer film is used as a guiding layer for the EO modulation because of its fabrication easiness. Although the material is not currently well-chosen and the fabrication process not well-established, we have investigated IO-EO switching devices [4,5] integrating grating couplers and electrodes in a slab waveguide consisting of an EO polymer on a Si substrate. Device configuration A schematic view of the proposed IO focus spot modulator is shown in Fig. 1. The IO device is constructed by integrating a focusing grating coupler (FGC) and poling/modulating electrodes in a slab waveguide on a Si substrate. The waveguide is made of a poled p-NAn-PVA (p-nitroaniline n-polyvinyl alcohol) [6] guiding layer, a polymer (OEBRl00) upperand a Si02 lower-buffer layers, and is sandwiched by planar Au and Au/Cr films (see Fig. 2) which are used as poling electrodes as well as modulating electrodes. The FGC consists of corrugation of Si-N layer deposited on the lower buffer layer and couple a guided wave diverging from a butt-coupled LD to a free-space beam focusing to a point on a disc. The upper electrodes are separated to two parts (interdigital configuration with 4 fingers is shown in Fig. 1). By applying modulation signal to one of the upper electrodes, we can modulate a phase retardation of the guided wave under the one part electrode against the wave under the other part. The intensity distribution of the FGC focus spot along the lateral direction changes according","PeriodicalId":103906,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 1993","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114054942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Against the background of digitization of c o m u nications and progress in video compression techniques, digital VOD has recently been proposed [1,2]. The volume of digital video data, however, is enormous: about 1.1 G B per 100 minutes even at the 1.5 Mbps of the IS0 MPEG standard. The storage of many video programs therefore requires an optical mass storage system (MSS) [3], the use of which is associated with the following problems: (1)Fksponse is slow because of the time required for mounting a disk. (2)When a video program divided into several surfaces or disks, the playback is interrupted while turning over or changing disks, and it is difficult to implement visual search. (3)Waiting time is long when all drives are in use. This paper proposes solutions for these problems and verifies their effectiveness in trial VOD system.","PeriodicalId":103906,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 1993","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121160594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, a rewritable storage for multimedia has been strongly desired, and rewritable compact disc(CD-rewritable) would be one of the most feasible candidates. It is considered to be the most important characteristics for a disk, relating to multimedia CD systems, that compatibility with any kinds of CD writers with various rotating speed(depending to systems) and stability against read-out cycles are strictly insured. With this in mind, we have attempted to obtain a disk with the Ag-In-Sb-Te system, that is compatible with both CDvelocity (CDlX=1.2-1.4m/s) and double CD-velocity (CD2X=2.4-2.8m/s). In this paper, the overwriting characteristics of the disk at these CD velocities will be reported, and feasibility for a CD-rewritable will be discussed. Experimental The disk structure suitable for CD velocities is as follows; polycarbonate substrate/ ZnS *Si02(200nm) / Ag-In-Sb-Te(20nm) / AlN(30nm) / Ag(70nm) / UVresin.Prior to the evaluation of the overwriting characteristics, the recording layer had been initialized with unmodulated diode laser beam to its ordered state. By using electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, it was observed that the Ag-In-Sb-Te system in its ordered state was in a mixed phase, with both amorphous In-Sb phase and fine crystalline AgSbTe;! phase(diameter:5-30nm)*). The phase change process of the Ag-In-Sb-Te system is shown in Fig.1. The reversible write/erase switching is taking place at the thick arrow in Fig.1. The constant linear velocities for recording were 1.2m/s(CDlX) and 2.4m/s(CD2X). One of the simplest examples of multipulse3) EFM signals was employed for one-pass overwriting. The wavelength of diode laser was 830 nm and NA of the object lens was 0.5. Overwriting Characteristics Figure 2 and 3 show the dependence of carrier-to-noise ratio(CNR) and erase ratio(Ers.) on peak power in the overwriting mode at CDlX and CD2X. The highest Ers. of -50dB is obtained for both velocities and the signal was almost completely erased. Wide peak power margin to satisfy the conditions of CNm50dB and Ers.<-40dB is obtained. In Fig.4, the result of read-out cycle test is shown. No decrease of the CNR is observed after 1 million cycles at the reading power of 1.5mW, and the stability of","PeriodicalId":103906,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 1993","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127206840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
