In recent years, automatic identification and diagnosis of motorbike engine faults has become a very complex and critical task. The noise produced by a motorbike engine is an important information source of fault diagnosis. Artificial Neural Network finds applications in many industries including condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. In this paper a simple feature extraction algorithm that extracts the features from the engine noise signal using discrete wavelet transform is presented. The engine noise signals are decomposed into 8 levels using Daubechies ldquodb4rdquo wavelet family. The eight level coefficients energy of approximated version and detailed version are computed and used as features. Three simple neural network models are developed and trained by conventional backpropagation algorithm for identifying the motorbike engine faults and the average classification rates are around 85%.","PeriodicalId":103889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Electronic Design","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115671607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In University Malaysia Pahang (UMP), due to the nature of the buildings, split units air-conditioning systems are used in the faculty office blocks and the lecture halls. It is found that a major portion of the energy consumed came from the lecture hall buildings. The appliances are sometimes switched on when they should be off. This contributes to energy wastage. The energy wasted can be reduced by controlling the appliances and system using a control system while maintaining a comfortable and safe environment in the building. This paper presents the FKEE approaches in solving energy wasting in UMP's lecture hall. In the previous paper, we presented a preliminary case study on energy wastage occurrences in a UMP lecture hall, Dewan Kuliah 13 (DK 13). We found that the DK13 lecture hall is often left with lights and air-conditioning switched on with no occupants. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a design of energy saving control system for air-conditioning and lighting system that can be used in lecture halls to prevent energy wasting.","PeriodicalId":103889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Electronic Design","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114451836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Static power reduction methods such as synthesis of efficient hardware and compilation for low power are applied at design time. In contrast, Dynamic Power Management (DPM) techniques leverage on the runtime characteristics to reduce power when systems are serving light workloads or are idle. Though much work has been done on profile-based CPU power management, similar efforts are relatively less for I/O devices. This paper proposes an algorithm for profile based power management of the peripherals for embedded computing systems. It enables suitable decisions for efficient operation of the peripherals considering both power and performance. The algorithm lends well for applications with both single and multiple independent peripherals.","PeriodicalId":103889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Electronic Design","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128398067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

RD code is constructed using code level and data level. One of the important properties of this code is that the cross correlation at data segment is always zero, which means that Phase Intensity Induced Noise (PII/) is reduced. It has been observed through theoretical analysis and experimental simulation that RD code performs significantly better performance than Hadamard and modified frequency-hopping (MFH) codes. In this study, point-to-point power limited transmission (laser source with maximum input power=0 dBm) with three RD-encoded channels are tested at the bit rate of 10 Gbit/s per channel. Results show that the uses of optical amplifiers are necessary to improve system performance by increasing transmitted power. To achieve practically desirable (high) spectral efficiencies, Erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) is used for simulating system performance. It has been shown that by using this type of amplifier, the transmission distance is greatly improved. Transmission of 10 Gb/s with a power limit of 0 dBm laser source is made feasible over a total reach of 30 km for 3 channels by the use of pumped EDFA.","PeriodicalId":103889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Electronic Design","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128471316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scope of the paper focuses on speed optimization with parallelism. Smith-Waterman algorithm is sensitive algorithm used for procedure of DNA sequence alignments in computational molecular biology. As the number of sequence database increase exponentially, it affects the performance of Smith-Waterman algorithm in general purpose computer. Therefore, several techniques have been developed in order to speed up the crucial sequence comparison processes. Hence, optimization technique which used parallelism approach has been utilized. Moreover, the technique, which was previously used in cluster computing, has been exploited and implemented on FPGA technology. This is certainly true, for some fruits whose color have no direct correlation with its level of maturity or ripeness. The levels of maturity can be determined by human expert, however for larger quantity inspection, this method is beyond practical. Therefore, accurate automatic classification for fruit maturity may be advantageous for the agriculture industry. In addition, consumers in supermarkets may also benefit from this system. This paper describes variant methods used for this purpose and the method which is proposed to enhance the measuring techniques. Feasibility study been conducted for nondestructive fruit maturity classifier system based on capacitive properties measurement methods using parallelplate capacitor.
