This reduction is based on a subdivision of the coupled and uncoupled currents, reducing the amount of radiating currents that needs to be taken into account. This reduces the number of elements in the system MoM matrix. Additionally, symmetry and repetition occurring in complex structures, e.g., Circular Polarization Selective Surface (CPSS), is used to reduce the computation time in similarly reoccurring integrals. Both aspects pay off when structures get more complex. For one structure, a reduction of computational time with a factor 4.5 was achieved as compared to a full EFIE solver without reduction.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124789094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It combines two different data mining techniques to retrieve semantically related images: clustering and association rules mining algorithm. The semantic association rules mining is constructed at the offline phase where the association rules are discovered between the text semantic clusters and the visual clusters of the images to use it later at the online phase. The experiment was conducted on more than 54,500 images of ImageCLEF 2011 Wikipedia collection. It was compared to an online image retrieving system called MMRetrieval and to the proposed system but without using association rules. The obtained results show that the proposed method achieved the best precision score among different query categories.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116135539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After determining an approximate number of required BSs to cover an area of interest, the positions of these BSs are determined using the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Deployment using SA is compared to a benchmark approach consisting of a uniform deployment of the BSs over the area of interest. Scenarios with uniform user distribution are investigated, in addition to scenarios with Gaussian distribution. These latter scenarios correspond to a hotspot case, where users are concentrated in the center of a given area and the concentration is reduced as we move away from the center. BS deployment in heterogeneous networks was also investigated, and shown to lead to better results than a network with only macrocell BSs.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115022945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Face2Mus streams songs from online radio stations and classifies them into emotion classes based on audio features using an energy aware support vector machine (SVM) classifier. In parallel, the application captures images of the user's face using the smartphone or tablet's camera and classifying them into one of three emotions, using a multiclass SVM trained on facial geometric distances and wrinkles. The audio classification based on regular SVM achieved an overall testing accuracy of 99.83% when trained on the Million Song Dataset subset, whereas the energy aware SVM exhibited an average degradation of 1.93% when a 59% reduction in the number of support vectors (SV) is enforced. The image classification achieved an overall testing accuracy of 87.5% using leave one out validation on a home-made image database. The overall application requires 272KB of storage space, 12 to 24 MB of RAM and a startup time of approximately 2 minutes. Aside from its entertainment potentials, Face2Mus has possible usage in music therapy for improving people's well-being and emotional status.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130477492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The non-uniform irradiance in large PV arrays is attributed to partially shaded PV modules and may significantly increase the complexity of the MPP tracking problem. In Stage 1, the method makes use of real-time irradiance measurements in certain regions of the generator to estimate the power versus voltage (P-V) curve and to deduce an estimate of the global peak region. This is followed in Stage 2 by a single peak tracking approach starting at the estimated global peak, which combines ripple correlation and incremental conductance, to accurately locate the exact global power point. The system consists of a PV generator, with pyranometers distributed across it, a DC-DC converter feeding a battery, and a controller implementing the tracking algorithm. The system simulation model was developed in MATLAB, taking into consideration the implementation of bypass and blocked diodes together with the pyranometer irradiance inputs. The paper first presents a modeling and simulation scheme suitable for studying the I-V and P-V characteristic curves of a PV array with partial shading configuration given the exact irradiance values. This is followed by a method of global peak region estimation knowing the location and readings of the distributed pyranometers. Tracking results of the two-staged approach are demonstrated under various shading configuration cases.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131836637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most dangerous disasters is fires. In addition to its direct danger on human's lives, fire consumes forests where trees that provide humans with oxygen are destroyed. The risk of fire has increased due to the problem of global warming which appeared in the 1980s. Forest fires represent a constant threat to ecological systems, infrastructure and environmental aspects of a community. This gives rise to the urgent need to detect forest fires as fast as possible. This paper highlights the powerful feature of wireless sensor networks as a potential solution to the challenge of early detection of forest fires. The device presented makes use of various sensors attached, solar recharging mechanism, and wireless data transmission, to fulfill the task in question. These collected data are transmitted to a near central unit where they are analyzed and then uploaded to an online website which contacts the Civil Defense unit if necessary. This website is accessible by the specific authorities in order to take early actions in case of any alert. It is worth mentioning that this system is efficient and green; thus, enforcing the need for its creation.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130501467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
