The use of music stimuli is one of the simple practices to evoke particular emotions in human beings. Features extracted from physiological (EEG) signals can be used to easily recognize these emotions. The physiological signals have an unbiased nature and the results based on these signals are highly trusted, that is why the use of these signals has made advancements in the emotion recognition systems. This paper presents an overview of the procedure to identify the changes in emotions evoked by music. 25 subjects participated in the study. The study is conducted using two types of music, preferred music and relaxing music. The preferred music is selected by the participants according to their choice and hence it belongs to seven different genres of the music. Relaxing music is composed of alpha binaural beats. EEG data is collected from all the subjects before listening to music, after listening to their preferred music, and relaxing music. The data is preprocessed for artifact removal. Alpha and beta bands are extracted from the clean EEG signals. Two dimensional model based on arousal and valence is selected to recognize the changes in the emotional state. The changes in emotions, induced by both music, are measured using the arousal and valence values. These changes are compared with their baseline emotion level (the emotion level before listening to music). The results show that the level of arousal and valence increased after listening to both music. Hence it may imply that listening to music is helpful in shifting the emotions into positive state. Preferred music and relaxing music increased the arousal level by 0.8% and 30% respectively. Whereas, the increase in valence was 90% and 177% after listening to preferred music and relaxing music respectively. The arousal and valence level produced by relaxing music, was more helpful in evoking positive emotions as compared to the preferred music.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"11 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120858969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary purpose of this identifier is to distinguish from others as well as to deal with digital machines which are surrounding the world. Recently, many researchers proved that the brain electrical activity or electroencephalogram (EEG) signals could provide robust and unique features that can be considered as a new biometric authentication technique. One of the most important things to extract the efficient and unique features from the input EEG signals is to find the optimal method to decompose the input EEG signals. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel method for EEG signal denoising based on multi-objective flower pollination algorithm with wavelet transform (MOFPA-WT) to extract such information from denoised signals. MOFPA-WT is evaluated using a standard EEG signal dataset, namely, Keirn EEG dataset, which has five mental tasks, includes baseline, multiplication two numbers, geometric figure rotation, letter composing, and visual counting. The performance of MOFPA-WT is evaluated using three criteria, namely, accuracy, true acceptance rate, and false acceptance rate. It is worth mentioning that the proposed method achieves the highest accuracy result which can be obtained using mental tasks based on geometric figure rotation compared with mental tasks.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134009997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exercise for athletes is an activity that requires physical effort to be carried out in order to build up their stamina, muscle strength, and to improve their fitness level and performance. During the exercise, body will emit infrared radiation due to human thermoregulation process which could be detected using infrared thermography. However, the effect of various weights on low intensity dynamic exercise is still unclear. Therefore, this study is conducted to explore and investigate the effect of various loads to the changes of skin surface temperature in low intensity dynamic exercise using infrared thermography. A set of test was conducted on 10 healthy men by performing repetitive calf raise exercise with 0 kg, 0.9 kg and 2.72 kg individual ankle weight within 3 minutes. Muscle surface temperature was registered from gastrocnemius muscle and the analysis was focused on the changes of the muscle temperature for the various loads given. Average temperature and temperature difference were extracted from thermal images. Statistical analyses on the effect of loads on temperature parameters were then analysed. Results obtained show that although higher temperature difference changes were observed in the higher load exercise however statistically there is no effect of various loads on the temperature parameters in the beginning and along the exercise duration. Therefore, this study concluded that thermography can be used as a method for assessing human thermoregulation process during low intensity dynamic exercise.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129644688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are still vulnerable in its accuracy in categorizing and differentiating Activities Daily Living (ADLs) and falls as most of existing system cause false alarm. This research addresses the building of fall detection approach by using built-in tri-axial accelerometer. There are four main phases involved in this research: (1) data acquisition, (2) data processing and filtering, (3) feature extraction and selection and (4) data classification. The raw data of simulated ADLs and falls by participants is collected via built-in-tri-axial accelerometer in smart phone, then automatically send towards the computer via wireless communication. Then, the data is processed and extracted. The proposed algorithms were employed, evaluated and compared in analysis. The findings suggest that ANN method with 35 hidden neurons is the most accurate model for fall detection system in this research as it achieved 99.24% overall accuracy while producing 0.18% FPR. This approach has the potential to be implemented and deploy in real-time mobile application in future.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129000281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a comparative analysis of three denoising techniques, which are wavelet (WT), automatic independent component analysis (AICA) rejection, and automatic hybrid technique using independent component analysis and wavelet (AICA-WT), has been conducted to select the optimal denoising technique. Two approaches have been used to extract meaningful features these are Permutation entropy (PEn) and Higuchi's fractal dimension (FD) from Electroencephalography (EEG) dataset of 5 vascular dementia (VD) patients, 15 stroke-related patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 15 healthy subjects during working memory task (WMT). k-nearest neighbors (kNN) classifier has been used. The results show that the AICA-WT denoising technique improved the kNN classification accuracy from 88.15% for WT and 89.26% for AICA rejection to 90.37%for AICA-WT denoising technique. These results suggest AICA-WT consistently improves the discrimination of VD, MCI patients and control normal subjects which are useful for dementia early detection.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126574169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the bone quality assessment of quantitative ultrasound still not match with X-ray based densitometry measurement. Take into consideration of fast and slow wave parameter is believed to improve bone quality assessment using ultrasound. Still, the existing technique effectively measured fast and slow wave is through transmission, which is confined to the certain part of the skeletal site. Based on recent simulation studies, pulse echo measurement technique is proposed to solve the problem by investigating the correlation between fast and slow wave observed from backscattered waves with bone porosity. The 2D simulation is conducted toward 18 bone models with 9 models with parallel orientation and 9 models with perpendicular orientation. By determine the difference between the simulated waveforms obtained using the two bone models, the backscattered waves from various depths can be isolated from overall reflected waves. Fast and slow wave will be identified in time domain from 4 difference depth of backscattered waves obtained. At the depth of 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm of backscattered wave, two waves which are might be fast and slow waves can be observed in the time domain of the parallel orientation model at the time between 13 µs to 16 µs compared to the perpendicular orientation model. The correlation between fast wave amplitude (R2 = 0.77) and attenuation (R2 = 0.72) with various porosities shows a clear negative correlation compared to slow wave amplitude and attenuation. The results also have a good agreement with previous research. Using 2D simulation, the backscattered wave can be isolated and a fast and slow wave was successfully observed in time domain. Hence, focusing on fast wave parameter for pulse echoes measurement might provide an improvement in bone quality assessments.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122487988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are several methods used to evaluate breathing activities such as respiratory belt transducer, impedance pneumography, bioacoustics method and spirometry. Some of these devices require external attachment on patient such as belt, electrodes and sensor which could be inconvenient if used over long period of times. Infrared Thermal Imaging (ITI) is a contactless device that detects temperature changes which can be used to assess breathing since hot air particles are being released to surrounding through nose which create temperature variance during breathing. Since majority of studies done on breathing function were focused on respiratory rate, hence, in this study we would like to assess the timing of inspiration (TI) and expiration (TE) in prolonged expiration breathing using Infrared Thermal Imaging (ITI). This study involved 4 subjects that are required to simulate our designed prolonged expiration breathing which will be guided by a video. The assessment of TI and TE will be recorded using ITI and Respiratory Inductive Plethysmograph (RIP) simultaneously. Graph pattern plotted from the ITI images show consistent deflections on the graph which reflect the transition point of inspiration and expiration. This transition point allowed us to measure the TI and TE. Our main analysis shows that there were no significant differences of the reading obtained by ITI and RIP in TI and TE. This data suggest that the performance of ITI was almost equivalent to RIP and could be used as an alternative method for breathing assessment.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"964 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133322550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This registration step is intended to be a pre-processing stage for an automated volumetric CT stroke image diagnosis system. The dynamic CT images were acquired with a gantry tilt and which has to be considered in the image registration step. We have previously shown that tilt correction can be performed implicitly and combined with intensity based registration to the CTA image. The processing time though, may hinder its usefulness in a clinical setting. Hence we show how the processing time can be reduced by around 75% simply by changing the implementation of trilinear interpolation in the registration algorithm. Some prospect for further improvement using GPUs is also touched upon.","PeriodicalId":103255,"journal":{"name":"2018 2nd International Conference on BioSignal Analysis, Processing and Systems (ICBAPS)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114420178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
