Previous work used a single, general classifier for different connectives; however, connectives differ in their distribution and behavior, so conflating them this way loses discriminative power. Here, we show that using models for specific connectives and types of connectives and interpolating them with a general model improves performance. We also describe additional features that provide greater sensitivity to morphological, syntactic, and discourse patterns, and less sensitivity to parse quality. Our best model achieves a 3.6% absolute improvement over the state-of-the-art on identifying both arguments of discourse connectives when using features from gold-standard parses, and a 9.0% improvement when using automatically produced parses.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124016261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our method supports large scale instance relationships for support of translation to an improved, functionally equivalent design. By generating new ontology versions on-the-fly we can verify potential updates to our requirements. An example of this technique is presented utilizing a subset of the OWL-DL specification through the implementation of the Jena API. Advantages of this approach include rapid prototyping, versioning support, querying and tool development to support the automated engineering of instance data.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129092054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At large, the semantic Web could be seen as a semantically integrated peer to peer system. These systems have been thoroughly studied by means of multi-agent epistemic logic frameworks. Most of the proposed approaches, however, in seek of generality, fail to provide means to implement the vast array of integration strategies that peers could adopt. We propose here a formal framework to overcome these limitations. Our approach resorts on a logic that prevents peer to peer mappings from causing direct knowledge transfers, and introduces a class of specific knowledge construction axioms to model concrete integration in a flexible way.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122700071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes how a speech-based classification problem can be split into components that are then combined in a classification module, which can be compiled for a specific platform and scenario with its respective technical requirements and limitations. We are focusing on the AGENDER Speaker Classification approach to show how a theoretic model can be transformed into a finished embedded module and present a tool that facilitates this in a fully automated build process.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127697809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This prototype achieves this capability by integrating a variety of AI and semantic technologies in a novel way. These technologies include an inference engine, semantic models, and various NLP/NLU approaches. We evaluate the performance of this prototype through a pilot with Accenture's Wireless Community of Practice. The results from the pilot are encouraging as the Technology Investment Radar's maturity assessments for the technologies tracked are comparable to those given by the human analysts. We also assess the utility of the system from an end user perspective. Our assessment reveal that the majority of the analysts found the system to be useful and will continue to use it after the pilot, demonstrating the practical value of the system.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123425651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important and novel aspect of this approach is that our categorization method does not require a training set, which is in contrast to the traditional statistical and probabilistic methods. In the presented method, the ontology, including the domain concepts organized into hierarchies of categories and interconnected by relationships, as well as instances and connections among them, effectively becomes the classifier. Our method focuses on (i) converting a text document into a thematic graph of entities occurring in the document, (ii) ontological classification of the entities in the graph, and (iii) determining the overall categorization of the thematic graph, and as a result, the document itself. In the presented experiments, we used an RDF ontology constructed from the full English version of Wikipedia. Our experiments, conducted on corpora of Reuters news articles, showed that our training-less categorization method achieved a very good overall accuracy.","PeriodicalId":102805,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121567969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
