The UPQC is one among the custom power devices which is a integration of series and shunt active power filters (APF) connected by a common link capacitor. The construction of shunt and series APF is by using a three phase three wire Voltage source Inverter (VSI). In series active filter, synchronous reference frame technique is used to extract fundamental voltage; whereas in shunt active filters, instantaneous reactive power theory (IRPT) is used to extract fundamental current. Switching pulses for both filters generated by hysteresis current controller (HCC), multilevel vector based hysteresis current controller (MVHCC) and adaptive hysteresis current controller (AHCC).The performance of the various HCC based control algorithm of shunt active filter with series active filter is evaluated in a three-phase distribution system connected with non-linear and unbalanced load conditions. Fuzzy logic control is used for dc capacitance balancing. The control technique is executed by the use of MATLAB/Simulink-based simulations environment.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"19 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120876916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on the application, spatially resolved measurements are required to provide a better understanding of the sample surface composition with significant advantages over conventional bulk analyses. The recent developments of the LIBS technique and its simplicity of use have allowed the development of systems capable of performing multi-element imaging analyses of major and trace elements with ~50 μm (or lower) spatial resolution at fast acquisition speeds up to kHz per pixel. LIBS technology enables systematic and selective ways based on the physics of atomic emission spectroscopy (AES). Complex structures are revealed by LIBS imaging at ultrafast speed. This paper presents results on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) performing fast high-resolution multi-elemental mappings of Phosphate samples. Phosphate Pellets samples were laser scanned at a repetition rate of 1 kHz with a spatial resolution of 50 μm, using the Mission: Coriosity platform from ELEMISSION Inc. The elemental mappings of the 10 mm2 surfaces for 6 elements were obtained, revealing high levels of detail and complexity in the elements distributions. Advanced graphical algorithms allow direct visualization of the distribution of several elements on the same image. In particular, LIBS imaging has been used for multi-elements surface mapping of Phosphate Pellets, and show specific clustering composition, indicating that line intensity of a given analyte element is not only related to that analyte, but also to other elements present in the samples. This last statement has been verified using multivariate approach for calibration and prediction of elemental concentration in Phosphate Pellets.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115452233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Finding an eco-friendly way of treating and/or valorising these by-products is of utmost importance for the phosphate processing industry, the settlements located near to the mine and processing plant and the environment in general. On the other hand, due to the fast development of the modern society, the transportation needs and therefore the number of tires produced to fulfill those requirements is increasing daily. When reaching their end-of-life those tires enter the waste stream creating a significant issue since they are very difficult to handle. The use of waste tire derived materials for the treatment of phosphate waste sludge could tackle both problems at once. This study focused on the use of waste tire crumb and the solid residue (char) of tire pyrolysis to adsorb trace elements (that are usually present in phosphate water effluents) from synthetic solutions. Cu and Ni where the minerals analysed in this case study. The behaviour of waste tire derived adsorbents in batch adsorption systems was studied varying the pH, contact time and cation to adsorbent quantity ratio. At optimum adsorption conditions, the potential adsorbent materials and their behaviour with the two heavy metal cations, differs. While char shows high affinity to adsorb Cu (>97% removal), crumb does not interact with this metal to a high extent giving a lower value (around 30%). On the other hand, for Ni, crumb performed slightly better than char although none of them reached 20% removal. When both cations were present simultaneously in the solution a negative impact on the Ni removal was noticeable for char, due to the leaching from the adsorbent. The adsorption process follows most likely an ion exchange mechanism. Therefore, this study shows the potential of waste tire derived materials for heavy metal cations removal from aqueous solutions.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131063386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Owing to the presence of implants and the formation of bacterial biofilms, the efficacy of antibiotics is limited. Furthermore, osteoclasts can become extremely active, accompanied by bone loss in the infected microenvironment. Therefore, implants often need to be removed. To improve the concentrations of antibiotics in bony tissues and enhance their effectiveness in preventing bacterial biofilm formation, the infection rate must be controlled to preserve the implants. Enoxacin exerts combined antibacterial and osteoclast inhibitory effects. It also plays a role in limiting infections and preventing bone loss. Aspartic acid octapeptide (ASP8) can also recognize and combine with hydroxyapatite crystals in bones and can be targeted to increase antibiotic concentrations in bones. Our previous research showed that preparing mesoporous nanomaterials resulted in optimal drug loading, releasing, and bone-targeting properties. Based on earlier research, a new bone-targeted antibiotic release system was developed. Enoxacin and ASP8 were loaded on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to increase antibiotic concentrations, prevent bacterial biofilm formation, inhibit aberrant osteoclast activities, and reduce bone loss. Enoxacin-loaded MSNs (Gen@MSN-D) were assessed using a variety of experimental methods, including rat models. We studied the in vitro antibacterial properties of the new drug delivery system. We found that these materials had antibacterial properties in vivo, inhibitory effects on osteoclasts, and can be used to prevent and treat post-implantation infections and bone loss. Therefore, we believe these materials will provide a new method for preventing and treating post-operative, orthopaedic implant-associated infections.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126589724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we analyze over 4000 intermetallic compounds, and we identify a hierarchical relationship between their crystal structures. By considering each intermetallic compound as a particular chemical ordering over the sites of a higher symmetry crystal structure, we determine that most intermetallic compounds can be derived from a small number of parent crystal structures. While many compounds are chemical orderings over the sites of simple crystal structures such as body-centered-cubic (bcc) and face-centered-cubic (fcc) structures, the majority map onto more complex parent crystal structures. Surprisingly, many intermetallic compounds map onto parent crystal structures that differ from those of their elemental constituents. We find that the occurrence of several of the more complex parent crystal structures, such as the Laves phases, can be understood in terms of simple descriptors such as the ratio of atomic radii and electronegativity differences.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122189655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we present a 2.7 A resolution X-ray structure of wild-type IslA from Bilophila wadsworthia with isethionate bound. In comparison to other GREs, alternate positioning of the active site β strands allows for distinct residue positions to contribute to substrate binding. These structural differences combined with sequence variations create a highly tailored active site for the binding of the negatively charged isethionate substrate. Through the kinetic analysis of fourteen IslA variants, we probe the mechanism by which radical chemistry is used for C–S bond cleavage. This work further elucidates the structural basis of chemistry within the GRE superfamily and will inform structure-based inhibitor design of IsIA and thus of microbial hydrogen sulfide production.","PeriodicalId":102139,"journal":{"name":"Other Topics Engineering Research eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126224890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
