Decreasing spore density and the amount of accompanying matrix increased germinability of freshly gathered spores, especially those from < 10-day-old cultures. Removing the matrix altogether by washing and then decreasing spore density significantly increased germinability. When subjected to drying, germinability of matrix-free (washed) spores was negligible, whilst that of unwashed spores remained the same as for freshly harvested spores, especially with increasing spore density and culture age. As there is no occasion for seasonal carry-over of inoculum in the tropics, it is suggested that with C. capsici the inhibitory or retardatory role of the matrix should be considered in the context of mass survival previous to splash-dispersal.

","PeriodicalId":101257,"journal":{"name":"Transactions of the British Mycological Society","volume":"91 4","pages":"Pages 694-697"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0007-1536(88)80047-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91773538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The activities of several enzymes of intermediary carbon metabolism were only slightly affected by removal of carbon dioxide. However, depending on the time and duration of a lowered carbon dioxide level, sexual differentiation was strongly inhibited, possibly through inhibition of α-1,3 glucan synthesis. If the cultures were deprived of carbon dioxide at the end of the growth phase, the activity of the developmentally regulated enzyme α-1,3 glucanase was very low and sexual differentiation was inhibited. Addition of carbon compounds to the medium in some cases alleviated the negative effect of lack of CO2 on sexual differentiation. A concentration of carbon dioxide higher than the atmospheric concentration is important in Aspergillus nidulans for α-1,3 glucan metabolism and sexual differentiation.

","PeriodicalId":101257,"journal":{"name":"Transactions of the British Mycological Society","volume":"91 4","pages":"Pages 625-629"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0007-1536(88)80037-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91773530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
