The </span><sup>137</sup>Cs inventory in sediment on a 480 km<sup>2</sup> area near the Rhone mouth reached 19.6 TBq in 1990. The spatial distribution of both sediment accumulation rates and <sup>137</sup>Cs concentrations in this area confirm the existence of a spatially well-delimited zone, i.e. the prodelta, where both parameters are the highest. Thus, 40% of the total amount of <sup>137</sup>Cs stored in this 480 km<sup>2</sup> area was found within the prodelta (30 km<sup>2</sup>) in the close vicinity of the river mouth. This attests to the efficiency of the <sup>137</sup>Cs trapping by the prodelta sediments. A study on the part the different <sup>137</sup><span><span>Cs sources in the Mediterranean Sea play in contributing to this inventory has been carried out. These sources are (i) direct deposition from both global fallout and the Chernobyl accident, (ii) indirect inputs arising from the erosion of surface soils of the Rhone </span>catchment area<span> that were also contaminated by the previous fallout, (iii) liquid effluents from the nuclear industry into the Rhone waters. Assuming that direct deposition is evenly distributed over the study area (480 km</span></span><sup>2</sup>) and that the particulate <sup>137</sup><span>Cs input from the Rhone is entirely trapped in this same area, these sources account for about 50% of the inventory. These hypotheses are unlikely in a coastal area subject to various physical disturbances but they are conservative enough to assess the lower limit of the nuclear liquid releases contribution to this inventory to be 50%.</span></p></div>","PeriodicalId":100980,"journal":{"name":"Oceanologica Acta","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0399-1784(03)00036-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87852191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biomass was twice as abundant in spring. It increased toward the coast and the west of the gulf and was positively correlated to chlorophyll, primary production and organic particulate matter<span> and negatively to temperature and salinity. The enrichment effect of Rhone river input and the oligotrophic influence of the north Mediterranean current (NMC) were the main distribution factors of zooplankton biomass. Higher biomass was obtained in coastal stations with the 80 μm net, which sampled more efficiently young larval stages and nauplii. Zooplankton metabolic activity (respiration, ammonium and phosphorus excretion) was studied at the inner and outer stations of each transect. Oxygen/nitrogen (O/N) ratio was lower in spring than in winter, indicating that more protein material was used for food, to complete the energy needed for the spring enhancement of secondary production. Nitrogen and phosphorus excreted by zooplankton accounted for 31% and 10% of the primary production requirements in spring and for 32% and &gt;100%, in winter. Grazing impact and secondary production were calculated from respiratory requirements using a </span></span><em>K</em><sub>2</sub> value of 0.4 and an assimilation rate of 0.8. Grazing impact ranged between 9% and 69% of the primary production in spring and between 6% and 83% in winter, depending on the stations. While cruising, salinity, temperature and fluorescence of surface waters (1.5 m) were recorded every minute, in association with precise GPS<span> position. The whole set of data (i.e. 128 measured points per cruise) constitutes the Sorcom series whose synthetic results are presented here. Despite the high spatial and temporal variability encountered between two successive cruises, the regularity and duration of the sampling strategy permitted to define coherent spatial zonation and temporal evolutions. In the Cape Couronne vicinity the dynamic of the eastern extension of the dilution plume clearly changes. Westward, waters are frequently under its influence, but more sporadically to the east, with a less pronounced gradient. In few cases, salinity lowering has been measured up to the gulf of Marseilles. In these two areas, which can be divided in two sub zones, seasonal evolutions are different. In the eastern area (Cape Couronne–Marseilles), the classical rhythm prevailing over marine waters is observed but with earlier phytoplanktonic bloom than usually reported. In the western part, and as getting closer to the Rhone river mouth, a weaker seasonal variability is observed for the phytoplanktonic biomass then salinity and temperature differences remain high. The better knowledge of the eastern dilution plume is of important socio-economical concern due to the numerous population living on this coast and the presence of pollutants in the river waters.</span></p></div>","PeriodicalId":100980,"journal":{"name":"Oceanologica Acta","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0399-1784(03)00037-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81593324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I present here a general overview of the bacteriological data collected during this survey. </span></span>Bacterioplankton biomass at Kerfix station was always significantly lower than in the direct vicinity of the Kerguelen Islands. Bacterial abundance decreased from surface to deepest layers (from 10</span><sup>6</sup> cells ml<sup>–1</sup> in surface layer to 5.0 × 10<sup>4</sup> cells ml<sup>–1</sup> at 1500 m). In contrast, mean cell volume (0.1 μm<sup>3</sup><span>) and proportion of free-living bacteria (80%) were relatively constant through the entire water column. The results suggest that a relatively low seasonal and inter-annual variability affect the total bacterial abundance, the mean cell volume and the percentage of free-living cells. The bacterial biomass is at least equivalent to that of phytoplankton in the surface layers. If integrated over the whole water column it reaches values higher than 1 g C m</span><sup>–2</sup> , which are higher than the corresponding values of phototrophic biomass.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100980,"journal":{"name":"Oceanologica Acta","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0399-1784(03)00031-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56209303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vertical internal displacements (double amplitudes) with a semidiurnal frequency are extremely large in both straits. The displacements are related to internal tidal waves over the sills. The energy of the internal tides is transferred to an internal bore and associated wave packets of short-period internal waves. Their surface manifestation can be seen on the satellite images. Numerical modeling shows that the outflowing current from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean has a significant influence on internal tides. In the Kara Gates, the flow from the Barents Sea to Kara Sea has a similar influence. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll </span></span><em>a</em><span><span>, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were noted throughout the whole gyre. On the other hand, there were a number of species found only in one of the currents. The mesozooplankton biomass size spectra (calculated in carbon units), exhibited a fairly stable slope of the curve from the eastern periphery of the gyre to its centre. The British Atlantic meridional transect program meridional transect through the western part of the gyre showed mesozooplankton size spectra in greater detail between the equator and 50° S. Although the spectra change slowly along the transect as far as 36° S, there is a general trend toward increasing slopes from the </span>equatorial region to the oligotrophic central gyre. An in situ autonomous oxygen profiler and laboratory oxygen mini-electrodes were used to measure the oxygen distribution in the sediments and calculate the diffusive oxygen fluxes. Clearer waters during the second expedition promoted a rapid shift from a net heterotrophic environment to a photosynthesis-dominated sediment. The diffusive exchange fluxes of oxygen through the sediment-water interface varied from an average consumption of 5.3 mmol m–2d–1 (February) to a net production of 12 mmol m–2 d–1<span> (March).
