In Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, where hunger and malnutrition are common, subtle differences concerning the interpretation of the causes of hunger exist among mothers of hungry children and professionals who provide services to them. Such differences are influential in the perpetuation of hunger and malnutrition. These competing discourses underplay (in many cases, even ignore) the political economy of hunger. This paper argues these disjunctures in the discourses of hunger take the spotlight off what is the ultimate root of hunger — namely, the neoliberal policies of the Nicaraguan government.</p>","PeriodicalId":100976,"journal":{"name":"Nutritional Anthropology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1548-7172.2005.tb00086.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89366537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The site was part of mid-to late-nineteenth century rural hamlet known historically to have been resident to many German immigrant families. Given the cultural proclivity by the Germanic peoples for rye bread, the archaeological sample was hypothesized to be rye. To test this hypothesis, a polymerase chain reaction analysis of DNA extracted from the bread was conducted. Recovered DNA indicates that the bread was made of wheat flour. The data reveal that Bambara and Fulani girls born in France are taller and heavier than their female counterparts born and raised in Mali. No indicators of obesity are evident among this sample. The sample's heights and weights match the U.S. reference data such that mean height-for-age z-score is −.02 ± .84, and the mean WAZ is 03 ± .96. Based on the conceptual framework of the brocultural model of human adaptation, these findings have implications regarding the environmental impacts affecting the growth status of Malian adolescent girls. The data suggest that improved growth may be due to improved environmental and cultural factors including increased food availability, safe food and water, a reduction in manual labor, and access to affordable and reliable healthcare. While this sample is relatively small, it appears that U.S. reference data are appropriate for use in non-U.S. populations to determine over and undernutrition.</p>","PeriodicalId":100976,"journal":{"name":"Nutritional Anthropology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1548-7172.2005.tb00087.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79012501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
