Given the links among stress, burnout, and the pervasive turnover that plague child welfare, agencies must look beyond simply training workers to better manage their stress. Identifying specific sources of workplace stress is the foundation for targeting organizational efforts to prevent job stress and burnout. In this study we developed and tested a new measure, the Child Welfare Worker Stress Inventory, with a sample of workers from child welfare agencies. The inventory demonstrated high reliability, yielding a Cronbach's alpha of 0.93. Evidence of validity was shown by a correlation of 0.70 between a stress/burnout measure and the stress inventory. The study found that the Child Welfare Worker Stress Inventory shows promise as a practical tool to help organizations better understand and mitigate workplace stressors.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"5 1","pages":"7-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21134","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85193104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two cases included 10 Muslim Americans in leadership positions and 10 in nonleadership positions in the legal field in northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. Data were collected through structured and semi-structured interviews, observations, and field notes. Themes and patterns were analyzed within and across data sources and cases for convergence, divergence, and triangulation. The results indicated that discrimination and the lack of opportunities, training, mentoring programs, support and guidance, and influential leaders hindered participants’ advancement to leadership positions. Results revealed common major barriers to the lack of opportunity, social support, and understanding. The support and guidance of a mentor and degree attainment contributed to advancement. Leaders and nonleaders experienced similar obstacles to and supports for advancement. Lack of leadership experience was a barrier for nonleaders. The findings confirmed current literature on negative attitudes Muslim Americans face working and living in the United States following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"4 4","pages":"33-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21126","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91435431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants were 223 employees (167 women and 56 men) of a small private southwestern university. The program consisted of participants selecting an overall step goal for a 7- or 15-week period (henceforth referred to as a session) from a set of predetermined goals. They used pedometers to track their weekly progress on steps taken toward that overall goal and reported those steps to the program coordinator. Participants who selected a higher goal (more steps per session) achieved more steps on average during the session. Lack of baseline data and the small number of male participants limit the generalizability of the results. This research contributes to the nascent literature on the incorporation of basic physical activity into the daily routine of employees and the promotion of organizational health.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"4 4","pages":"5-17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21121","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75770997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Job satisfaction and life satisfaction were significantly and positively related when controlling for demographic, health, and work–family variables. Mental health and work–family variables were the strongest predictors of both job satisfaction and life satisfaction, although the demographic variables were not statistically significant. Results indicated that 60% of the sample was described by the spillover (positive association between job satisfaction and life satisfaction) model, 32% by the compensatory (inverse association) model, and 8% by the segmentation (weak or no relationship) model.
