On the basis of these calculations the hypothesis is advanced that nuclei excited in fission to energies ∼20 MeV or more may emit a certain fraction of the neutrons before the fragments have been fully accelerated (this fraction is assumed to increase with increasing excitation energy). If this factor is taken into account, certain contradictions in the treatment of the experimental data are removed. It is pointed out that for this reason the method which has been used for some time past of determining the dependence of the number of neutrons on the mass of the fragments by comparing the energies and velocities of the fragments may, in the case of large excitations, turn out to be inapplicable.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100815,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nuclear Energy. It is shown that irradiation in air leads to a change in the chemical composition of the surface of the specimens as a result of heterogeneous radiochemical reactions between solid preparations and the components of the air. Azarenko","doi":"10.1016/0368-3230(66)90121-2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/0368-3230(66)90121-2","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The results are given of radiation tests on fl-heat-treated uranium bars at 200–300°C, 450–470°C, 480°C.</p><p>Graphs are plotted for the radiation growth factors <em>G</em><sub><em>i</em></sub> as a function of the growth index <em>GI</em> which characterizes the texture of the specimens under test. The component of the elongation caused by radiation growth due to texture is determined. The radiation growth factor as a function of test temperature is given for weakly defined texture. It is shown that the mean values of the coefficients of linear expansion a measured in one direction give no idea of the character and degree of the texture if the latter is not uniaxial.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100815,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nuclear Energy. Prokofiev","doi":"10.1016/0368-3230(66)90124-8","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0368-3230(66)90124-8","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The spectrum of prompt γ-rays emitted by the fission fragments in the thermal neutron-induced fission of <sup>235</sup>U has been exactly calculated within the framework of the basic statistical theory assumptions for the emission of neutrons and γ-quanta from excited nuclei. The shape of the spectrum corresponds approximately with the shape obtained experimentally but the computed total energy carried away by the γ-quanta (⪅6·2 MeV) is appreciably less than the experimentally determined amount (8–9 MeV). It is possible to remove this discrepancy if, in calculating the residual excitations, one takes into account the ‘thinning out’ of the levels of the fission fragment nuclei in the vicinity of the ground state.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100815,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nuclear Energy. Two different methods were used at 30 keV for the absolute neutron flux determination.
