The basic structure of such films consists of two ferromagnetic layers separated by a Cu layer. One of the ferromagnetic layers is strongly biased by an NiO antiferromagnetic film in direct exchange contact with it. Spin valve films having an NiO/NiFe/Cu/NiFe structure exhibit good sensitivity, and the MR ratio (Δρ/ρ) is 4% in an applied field of 10 Oe. Films with a layered NiO/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/NiO structure have an MR ratio of 7% in a field of 10 Oe. On the other hand, NiO/NiFe/Co/Cu/Co/NiFe films exhibit an MR ratio of 6% to 7.5%. The thermal stability of spin valve films was also studied.

Calculations of the permeability based on the Landau-Lifshitz relation predict that the dipole-dipole coupling between the magnetic layers works in favor of the K\u0000<inf>u</inf>\u0000 (in-plane uniaxial anisotropy) in each magnetic layer. When the gap between the magnetic layers is varied using ceramic layers, the dipole moment of the metal layers is influenced by the magnetic interaction of a ripple stray field in a 45° direction across intervening ceramic layers. In order to clarify the mechanism governing the isotropic permeabilities of these multilayer films, we extended our study to include ring-shaped as well as disk-shaped samples. In comparison with a uniaxial multilayer film, a ring-shaped composite anisotropy multilayer film has a closed magnetic circuit and hence a large inductance. Composite anisotropy effects are discussed.

It was made of permalloy (outer diameter 68 cm, length 180 cm, thickness 1.6 mm, weight approximately 60 kg) with an opening at one end and with Metglas® 2705M amorphous ribbons (width 5 cm, thickness approximately 22 μm) wound spirally about the permalloy case in 16 layers (total weight 12.1 kg) to cover the surface. A toroidal coil (36 turns) was wound around the amorphous layers to allow the creation of a magnetic shaking field. An external magnetic field was applied to the shielding case by means of a large rectangular Hemholtz coil, to evaluate the shielding factor, which was about 2700 at a frequency of 0.5 Hz when the shaking frequency was 200 Hz. At higher frequencies, it gradually dropped. The shielding factor was almost constant relative to the amplitude of the disturbing field down to 3 mG; beyond that point, a residual field could not be detected because of the limit of resolution of the flux gate magnetometer used. The leakage of the shaking field was about 30 μG at the center of the shielding case.

The eddy-current skin effect in the magnetic alloy layers was used to achieve high-loss properties. The thickness of each layer and magnetic anisotropy of a CoZrNb/SiO\u0000<inf>2</inf>\u0000 multilayer film were designed such that the film would exhibit high-loss properties in the 30 to 1000 MHz frequency range. A noise filter tube was constructed incorporating such high-loss film, and a large impedance and noise attenuation for common-mode noise in this frequency range were confirmed. A noise filter tube was constructed with size reduced by a factor of ~100 compared with a conventional filter (ferrite core).

The growth conditions were optimized, and the RHEED patterns of Co ultrathin films revealed streaks reflecting the symmetry of the fcc Cu (001) surface. Longitudinal Kerr hysteresis loops were square for Co coverage thicknesses greater than 6Å, and were detected down to 4Å. The longitudinal Kerr rotation and ellipticity spectra were measured over the photon energy range from 2.0 to 4.6 eV, after Co coverage deposition of each sample. The off-diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor (ωσ\u0000xy\u0000) were evaluated. When the Co coverage thickness is 50Å, the shapes of both the ωσ'\u0000xy\u0000 and ωσ"\u0000<inf>xy</inf>\u0000 spectra showed essentially the same features as those of 1000Å thick fcc Co films. When the Co thickness decreased below 50Å, ωσ"\u0000xy\u0000 became smaller in magnitude. The decrease in ωσ"\u0000xy\u0000 as a fraction of a number of Co/Cu layers is discussed.
