The damage mechanisms occurring in the laminates are dependent on several parameters and no damage occurs if the impact energy is accommodated by the elastic strain energy in the material. In the present paper a two-parameter model has been developed for residual compressive strength prediction of impacted carbon fibre-reinforced laminates. The model takes into account parameters such as stacking sequence and material properties. For verification of the model, two groups of experimental results were used: group A test results were taken from the literature, while those of group B were taken from experiments executed within the framework of an EEC project, in which the University of Patras participated as a partner. Good agreement was found between experimental findings and theoretical predictions. Nomograms derived from the present model can be used for optimum design of the carbon fibre-reinforced laminates.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100296,"journal":{"name":"Composites","volume":"26 7","pages":"Pages 517-523"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0010-4361(95)96809-K","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86208502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermogravimetry and mechanical spectrometry were used to determine the initial water content of prepregs and the dependence of viscosity on temperature. The pressure conditions were defined with respect to these preliminary test results. A set of curing pressure routes was then designed to produce unidirectional laminates with void contents between 0.3 and 10 vol%. The mechanical properties of unidirectional laminates depend on the void content and this results in the determination of an optimal curing pressure route which involves minimizing the void content, while the mechanical properties are kept at their maximum level. To allow generalization of the experimental results, this study has been performed on two different composite materials.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100296,"journal":{"name":"Composites","volume":"26 7","pages":"Pages 509-515"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0010-4361(95)96808-J","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82997184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
