During an out-of-state team tournament trip to Florida, he met Jane Roe, with whom he had a sexual encounter. The following day, Roe, then 16, filed a sexual battery complaint with local authorities. In a subsequent controlled call monitored by detectives, Doe reportedly admitted to the interaction. When interviewed by detectives later, he acknowledged that Roe had expressed discomfort but he offered to stop and she agreed, however, he allegedly continued to initiate sexual contact. Although claims in the past were often rejected by the courts based on a variety of legal theories, the tide appears to have turned in the last several years. Now more than ever, courts are recognizing the legal rights and corresponding entitlements that belong to student-athletes.
