Ultimately, the student-athlete takes on the risk and responsibility for any dietary supplements they ingest. However, ATs, team physicians, and registered dietitians should be prepared to assist student-athletes in assessing whether the supplements they’re considering using are safe, effective, and legal for their sport. By way of background, in the aftermath of concerns surrounding the conduct of its former head football coach, the university commissioned both an investigation into that conduct and a separate review of the culture, conduct, and procedures within the athletics department.
