Keri Becker's past military experience continues to help her to lead well in her current role as Director of Athletics at Grand Valley State University. “Chain of command, mission alignment, and leadership are the three words that come to mind when I think about the military's influence on my own leadership. I like the clarity a chain of command provides in communication and accountability,” said Becker, whose service in the U.S. Army Reserves included active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. “In an athletics department, we have our head coaches who are the ‘generals’ of their programs and the associate ADs who are the ‘generals’ of the functional units within the department. If these two groups of people are aligned in our purpose/mission, and they’re solid leaders and humans, we have the absolute best chance for the highest level of success,” she noted. Becker said that her team does “a wonderful job of ensuring communication flows to everyone in the department, and I trust them whole-heartedly.”</p>","PeriodicalId":100289,"journal":{"name":"College Athletics and the Law","volume":"23 5","pages":"8-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148700042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
