As the knowledge of cytokine biology and their role in human disease accumulates, cytokine assessment is likely to become even more extensive. It is essential that this assessment be performed expertly, preferably in clinical laboratories with established QC and QA programs, and interpreted accurately. The correct interpretation of results is a key to defining and validating clinical usefulness of cytokine assays. More than a single assay may be necessary to confirm the involvement of a cytokine in a disease. Cytokines mediate interactions between various cells and they are also involved in signaling within the cell. The wide choice of cytokine assays available today offers possibilities for evaluating diverse aspects of the cytokine biology. Hintzen","doi":"10.1016/S0197-1859(00)89171-2","DOIUrl":"10.1016/S0197-1859(00)89171-2","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>CD27 is an interesting lymphocyte specific member of the still growing TNF-R family, a group of molecules that are involved in the regulation of differentiation, activation and survival of lymphocytes. Some of these molecules have already been shown to play essential roles in autoimmunity and lymphoproliferation. The exact biological role of CD27 remains to be resolved, but it can be anticipated that it modulates antigen specific immune responses and that it is mainly functional in lymphoid tissue such as germinal centers. Study of the expression of CD27 and its ligand CD70 on lymphocytes can provide insight in different immunopathological conditions.
