On the ashes of this failed program of modernization, it is high time to take a serious look at the phenomenon of improvisation: its structure, dynamics and forms of occurrence in both emergency and routine situations.

The study of such a ubiquitous human practice reveals that even in highly structured organizations improvisation is a well grounded process that can be leveraged to face those situations where rules and methods fail.

Improvisation, seen as an ex-temporaneous process, opens up alternative approaches to cope with time in business. `Lifting out' the constraints posed by clock time, one can envisage the importance of those `moments of vision' that represent the elusive core of entrepreneurial behaviour. The conduct of research in an organizational setting is thus a major issue for the IS community. A research framework for in-context IS research is presented and used to position purified and hybrid forms of research method. From the framework theoretical support for an `action case' research method is presented. Two IS research cases are presented and analyzed using the IS research framework, leading to a practice-based rationale for an action case method. Characteristics of the action case method, a hybrid of interpretation and intervention, are described. Learning at three levels of analysis—concrete, general, and meta—is proposed and used as a way of reflecting on IS research methods and IS research frameworks.

","PeriodicalId":100011,"journal":{"name":"Accounting, Management and Information Technologies","volume":"9 1","pages":"Pages 25-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0959-8022(98)00018-6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82630690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although previous research has explored some organizational risks involved in end-user computing little is known, first, about the effects of shifting control over display choices from trained specialists to mainstream computer users and, second, whether end-users would benefit from decisional guidance in this area. We conducted an experimental study to gain insight into these issues by studying the display preferences and performance of student subjects in two different kinds of tasks. We found subjects performed certain tasks no better with their preferred display than with a randomly assigned display. Theory-based decisional guidance improved subjects' overall performance substantially, and subjects welcomed decisional guidance as long as it did not limit their options.

","PeriodicalId":100011,"journal":{"name":"Accounting, Management and Information Technologies","volume":"9 1","pages":"Pages 49-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0959-8022(99)00003-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89624415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on the probability of leaving unemployment to take up a full-time job. Data on actual benefit receipts are used for the analysis. The sample considered includes unemployed men on unemployment insurance or unemployment assistance from the start of the unemployment spell. Estimation of binary probability models indicates that observed characteristics explain well the probability of being on a given unemployment benefit scheme. The empirical findings signal that the unemployed on different benefit schemes cannot be treated as an homogeneous group, as has normally been done in previous UK studies.","PeriodicalId":100011,"journal":{"name":"Accounting, Management and Information Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88880492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such measures have also been adopted in The Netherlands by Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), part of the ministry of communications and responsible for roads and waterways. One of the current RWS objectives is to provide a quality motorway of high impact to the Dutch road network. In recent years, RWS has committed itself wholeheartedly to Total Quality Management (TQM). It is in the process of making fundamental changes in motorway construction management. For instance, it is considering giving the responsibilities for the quality of road maintenance to sub-contractors. Managers involved in the TQM project feel the need to develop the attitudes and quality-consciousness of all parties involved in the management of the construction and maintenance of the motorway. In an initial stage, it is essential to study the current attitudes to quality in general and to policies related to `providing a high-quality road' of all parties involved. The research project described below is a step in this direction. The research project took place within the broader framework of RWS's interest in `organisational learning'. The research project capitalised on the ability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to study human behaviour and integrated this with current RWS needs. More particularly, ANNs were used to visualise stakeholder perceptions and to monitor changes in these perceptions. As a result of the research project, a software tool was developed which is currently used in order to support the organisational change process.

","PeriodicalId":100011,"journal":{"name":"Accounting, Management and Information Technologies","volume":"8 4","pages":"Pages 211-226"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0959-8022(98)00010-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91719212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interrelations are loosely defined from a quantitative point of view, and studies are usually made at a macroeconomic or aggregate level. This paper presents a microscopic or individual-based model that represents explicitly every consumer, introduces ads as positive or negative reinforcers of consumer behaviour, and sales as results of individual decisions. Several experiments have been run on populations of these individuals or agents, and results checked against what is obvious or well known in reality. These experiments prove that the qualitative behaviour of the model closely resembles reality. Next step is to try to obtain quantitative results out of the model, and put it into an easy-to-use program.

","PeriodicalId":100011,"journal":{"name":"Accounting, Management and Information Technologies","volume":"8 4","pages":"Pages 237-253"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0959-8022(98)00012-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90106393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
