This study was aimed to assess the prevalence of MetS among physicians working at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. \u0000Materials and methods : Data was collected for this cross-sectional study from 255 working physicians of Chittagong Medical College Hospital in 2018. The participants filled a structured questionnaire followed by physical and biochemical measurements including waist circumference, blood pressure, lipid profile, and fasting blood glucose. National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III report (ATP III) defines criteria were used to identify physicians with the MetS. \u0000Results : Among 255 participants (males - 192 and females - 63), 100 (39.2%) were with MetS. Prevalence of same was higher in females (41.3%) than males (38.5%). The elderly physicians (>40 years) had a higher prevalence compared to the younger (£40 years) physicians [72 (50.3%) vs. 28 (25.0%)]. In the males, low High-Density Lipoproteins-Cholesterol (HDL-C) was the major contributor to the prevalence of MetS followed by high blood pressure. However, in females, low HDL-C and greater waist circumference contributed the maximum to MetS. \u0000Conclusion : This study showed a high prevalence of MetS among physicians of Bangladesh, and thereby warrants the urgent implementation of preventive health care strategies to reduce both morbidity and mortality related to this medical problem. Further studies ought to focus on the working conditions and lifestyles of individuals in these high-risk groups. \u0000Chatt Maa Shi Hosp Med Coll J; Vol.20 (2); July 2021; Page 65-68

Failure to treat properly leads to malunion of the fracture site. For that, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning is considered to be the golden choice for treatment. There are many methods in which percutaneous k-wire fixation can be done. The aim of this study is to report the advantages of percutaneous fixation using cross pinning from both medial and lateral sides. \u0000Materials and methods : A total number of seventy pediatric patients with Gartland type II and type III supracondylar fracture of the humerus were recruited from the outpatient department of two different hospitals between January 2018 and September 2020. All of them were treated using closed reduction and internal fixation using percutaneous crossed k-wires. The treatment outcomes were evaluated using Flynn’s criteria and were compared with other similar studies. \u0000Results : The mean age of study subjects was 8.14 ± 2.8 and the male to female ratio was 1.6:1. In 27(38.6%) cases the left arm was involved while in 43(61.4%) cases the right arm was involved. Preoperative complications included 1(1.4%) case with radial nerve palsy and 4(5.7%) cases with pulseless pink hand. When evaluating cosmetic outcome using Flynn’s criteria, there were 57(81.4%) excellent, 10(14.3%) good and 3(4.3%) fair outcomes. On evaluating outcome according to range of motion deficit outcomes were excellent in 35(50%), good in 22(31.4%), fair in 5(7.2%) and poor in 8(11.4%) children. Post-operative complications were 1(1.4%) ulnar nerve neuropraxia and 5(7.2%) superficial pin tract infections. \u0000Conclusion : Closed reduction and internal fixation using percutaneous crossed kwires placed from the medial and lateral side gives satisfactory cosmetic and functional outcomes in majority of the patients with Gartland type II and III supracondylar fractures of the humerus. \u0000Chatt Maa Shi Hosp Med Coll J; Vol.20 (2); July 2021; Page 32-36

Often times, teeth must be extracted in order to obtain proper esthetics, occlusion, and stability as well as extraction of teeth is often a need to close residual space, after the initial decrowding and aligning. Pre adjusted fixed orthodontic appliances commonly utilize sliding mechanics for space closure with different types of force delivery systems. A variety of materials have been used as force delivery systems to close spaces between teeth as in the case of canine retraction after the extraction of premolars. Elastomeric auxiliaries are relatively consistent in producing tooth movements. The purpose of the study to evaluate the rate of mandibular canine retraction by elastomeric power chain. \u0000Materials and methods : This obervational study was designed as split mouth study. A total number of 20 patients (40 quadrants),who required canine retraction into first premolar extraction sites as part of their orthodontic treatment in the Department of Orthodontics, BSMMU as study population. The quadrants were affixed by elastomeric power chain (Dentaurum) with 200gm force measured by Correx Tension Gauge. Space closure was measured by means of direct measurement from the mesial surface of mesial wing of the 2nd premolar bracket and the distal surface of distal wing of the canine bracket with digital Vernier Calipers. \u0000Results: Mean space closer rate in mandibular canine retraction was 0.99 ± 0.08 mm/month in elastomeric power chain method with p value<0.001. \u0000Conclusion : This study revealed that space closer rate in mandibular canine retraction was 0.99 ± 0.08 mm/month by elastomeric power chain. \u0000Chatt Maa Shi Hosp Med Coll J; Vol.20 (2); July 2021; Page 28-31

This study aimed to find out the associated factors with selected variables of low vitamin D among adult females of Chattogram. \u0000Materials and methods : Cross-sectional observational study was conducted from September 2019 to February 2020 at a diagnostic complex of Chattogram. Participants were adult females of Chattogram. All participants gave oral informed consent and answered a questionnaire that included 16 questions covering demographic information, monthly income, educational status, occupation, body weight, duration of sun exposure, dress pattern (Using hijab or burkha, regular dress-up) drug and disease history. Blood samples were collected by cautious aseptic procedure. Serum vitamin D levels were measured by using immunoassay method. Adult females of Chattogram with no religious restrictions, n= 150,aged 31 to 70 years. \u0000Results: Overall, 88% had low vitamin D levels with deficient 60.66% and insufficient 27.34%. Sufficient level of vitamin D was found only among 12%. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was much higher in females with house-wife status 73.33% (p value of 0.0001) wearing hijab 46.66% (p value of 0.001). It could be due to interference with UVB radiation into skin, short duration of sun exposure, use of sunblock cream or less supplementary intake. \u0000Conclusion : Vitamin D deficiency is an emerging but neglected health issue in modern time, particularly more vulnerable are female population. Ironically, abundant sunlight of Bangladesh seems failed to protect the self-imposed concrete prisoner, classically known as home-makers, and practitioner of indoor life style that leads to avoidance of sun light. However, large sample size is mandatory to boost-up the findings of current study. \u0000Chatt Maa Shi Hosp Med Coll J; Vol.20 (2); July 2021; Page 74-78
