Written consentswerean initial basic step. They filled aknowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) pre-structured questionnaire and were subjected to dietary assessmentusing 24 hours recall, frequencypattern, and milk consumption sheets. Laboratory evaluation of vitamin D and related indicators were measured. Food intake was analyzed and compared to the recommended dietary allowances using the food composition table of the National Nutrition Institute and based on WHO/FAO recommendations. Resultsrevealed that majority of respondents (96.0%) were veiled and 88.0 % were exposed to sun at noon time. Face and hands were the exposed parts in 96.0% of responses and 56.0 % mentioned that sun- exposure took more than an hour. Exposure to pesticides was mentioned in 16.0% of responses. Nearly two thirds were exposed to sun while windows were closed. Only 22.0% heard about vitamin D and two thirds considered milk among un-favored food items. This study concluded that to track progress toward getting rid of a health problem, we have to raise the level of awareness of youth and young adults about this problem.This study emphasized the need for further vitamin D assessment and interventions targeted at all people. There is an urgent need for public education about the vital role of vitamin D to improve vitamin D- related practice and to minimize the complications of its deficiency.","PeriodicalId":9493,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the National Nutrition Institute of the Arab Republic of Egypt","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81188518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These compounds and derivatives were shown to be endowed with biologically relevant activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic and antimicrobial properties. The present study was designed to investigate some parameters of the chemical composition of prickly pear peels and the effect of their nutritional status on liver and renal injury in rats. Thirty adult male albino rats Sprague–Dawley strain were classified into 2 main groups fed several diets for 28 days as follows: The first negative control group (6 rats / normal group) fed on standard diet. The second group (24rat) injected by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4); 6 rats presented as a positive control group fed on basal diet. 18 rats were as subgroups 1, 2 and 3 fed on basal diet with 5, 10 and 15% prickly pear peels respectively. At the end of the experimental period (4 week) biological parameters; some biochemical parameters and the histology for liver and renal were evaluated. The results showed a high value of moisture, carbohydrates, protein in prickly pear peels. The positive control group had a significantly lower value of the body weight gain. Liver enzymes and renal parameter of positive control group were higher significantly than negative control group and treated groups. Prickly pear peel ameliorates the effect CCl4 on liver and kidney in rats.","PeriodicalId":9493,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the National Nutrition Institute of the Arab Republic of Egypt","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90691080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, probiotic play a prominent role. Thence this study aimed to estimate the chemical constituents of kefir and kefir grain and identify the potential protective effect of probiotic (yoghurt/ kefir milk / kefir grain) to diminish the risk of lead (Pb) intoxication on male rats. Biological study was administered on forty two male rats which allotted into 6 groups involved negative control group (7 rats) , normal group consumed kefir milk and four groups which treated 50 mg of lead/kg body weight per day as testicular toxicant and classified into positive control group (+ve) , subgroups : yoghurt, kefir milk and kefir grain subgroups. The results revealed that all experimental treatments enhanced liver and kidney functions , antioxidant parameters and testosterone hormone levels, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone level (FSH) the most prominent positive effects were perceived in the group that consumed kefir milk and kefir grain. These acquired results are assured by the histopathological examination. In the present study, the protective effect of kefir milk and kefir grain against lead toxicity in rats was become well. Therefore, this study recommends that consume kefir and supplemented the products with kefir grains to prevent the damage caused by lead contamination.","PeriodicalId":9493,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the National Nutrition Institute of the Arab Republic of Egypt","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85948005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to early recognition of the carcinogenic effect of N-nitrosodiethlyamine (NDEA) on hepatocytes and expression of Fas-L and Caspase-3. The study was done using tissue homogenate of 60 male albino rats divided into 2 groups: group 1,control group (30 rats) and Group 2, -N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) treated group (NDEA, in a single dose 200 mg/Kg wt and; Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), twice per week 3 ml/Kg wt) (30 rats). 10 rats from each control and treated group were sacrificed at the 1st, 2n , and 3rd months of the treatment for evaluation (1) of glutathione s transferase(GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GRase), glutathione reduced form (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, (2) studying expression of Fas-L and Caspase-3 and (3) for histopathological examination. The results revealed that the treated group antioxidant enzymes levels (Glutathione family and SOD) showed a significant decrease with gradual rates through the three months of the treated compared to the control group, whereas the GRase level was significantly increased compared to the control group. Caspase-3 and Fas-L in liver tissue homogenate in the treated group was significantly decreased in comparison with the control group. The histopathological results showed pronounced changes with evident fatty degeneration (steatosis), marked microvascular steatosis with malignant hepatocytes amounting grade 1. Finally, study can conclude that investigation of liver tissue markers induced by the chemical carcinogen NDEA at different stages of the development of cancer could help in getting more information about the development of HCC and more investigated studies on Caspase-3 and Fas-L, could be a promising way for the treatment of HCC.","PeriodicalId":9493,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the National Nutrition Institute of the Arab Republic of Egypt","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87232837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
