Two types of loading patterns, namely, concentric and edge loading were adopted. Various aspects of the solar radiation received by surfaces of different orientations on clear days at several latitudes are examined. For small-scale exposure testing an equator-facing surface sloping at 45° to the horizontal is recommended at all latitudes. Based on the axial deformation distribution among columns, a reasonable assumption is further introduced to simplify the method. An example is included to illustrate the application of the proposed method and the accuracy of the simplified method.
