However, expressing empathy can also cause anxiety and impair psychological well-being.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To identify profiles that describe the relationship between empathy, anxiety and psychological well-being in Mexican medical students.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Cross-sectional study in Mexican medical students completed the Multidimensional Empathy Scale, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale for Adults.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Women presented greater empathy and anxiety and lower psychological well-being (p < 0.01). Anxiety in students of the last year of training was lower compared to students of the first and second year (p < 0.01). Four profiles were detected: 1) men, minimal anxiety, low empathy; 2) first-year students, moderate to severe anxiety, low psychological well-being, high empathy; 3) last year of training, mild anxiety, adequate psychological well-being, medium empathy; 4) women, second and third year of training, very high empathy.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Medical students in their first year of training constitute a population at risk. Although the device poses technical advantages, risks are present and a critical complication is the enteroatmospheric fistula formation (EAF).</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To analize the role of negative pressure therapy length and VAC<sup>®</sup> device number of changes on the EAF formation in trauma patients udergoing open abdomen.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Cut-off points were calculated using receiver operational characteristics curve. Values were compared with Student's t or Mann-Withney U tests, considering statistically significant p < 0.05.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>EAF were present in 39 cases (5.9%). Overall, ABLT significantly improved the lower limb motor function, increased walking speed and distance, and improved the daily living ability of children with SCI.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The ABLT strategy is of great significance to the motor function and walking ability of children with SCI. At present, there exist few studies on the application of ABLT for pediatric SCI. {"title":"Preemptive caudal anesthesia on back pain after lumbar discectomy: a randomized and controlled study.","authors":"Hidayet S Cine, Ece Uysal","doi":"10.24875/CIRU.23000311","DOIUrl":"10.24875/CIRU.23000311","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objective: </strong>In this randomized and prospective research, we aimed to relieve surgical and muscle-related pain early after lumbar disc operations with caudal preemptive analgesia.</p><p><strong>Materials and methods: </strong>A total of 120 patients with single-level lumbar disc herniation were included in this study. The caudal epidural injection was performed for all patients 20 min before surgery. The patients were divided into three groups. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or tramadol use were recorded. Pre-operative and post-operative pain was interpreted through a visual analog scale.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>There was a difference between the groups in all post-operative measurements (p < 0.05), between Group 1 and Group 3, and between Group 2 and Group 3. A statistical significance has been achieved between the groups at the 1<sup>st</sup> h, 2<sup>nd</sup> h, 4<sup>th</sup> h, and 24<sup>th</sup> h (p < 0.05). The difference between the pain intensities of the patients at the 24<sup>th</sup> h and the 1<sup>st</sup> week was statistically significant in Groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05). The study was performed under informed consent and according to the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Of the 34 patients, 12 were children or adolescents and 22 were adults. The visualization of the round window classified via microscopy per St. Thomas Hospital's classification showed that type IIB prevailed in 30.2% of patients, and type III in 41.9%, and when using the endoscope, the round window was observed in full in 82.6% of patients (type I), and type IIA was only observed in 17.4% (four patients). The number of attempts made to place the cochlear implant was greater with the microscope. The time to insertion of the electrode was 1.6 minutes. No differences were observed (p > 0.05) in the number of inpatient days. Cabe in 1979 and, since then, many authors have tried to define, explain and correctly treat this disease. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders defines it as sudden sensorineural hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three contiguous audiometric frequencies in a period of 72 hours. Among the therapeutic strategies, corticosteroids have been shown to have the greatest benefit due to their anti-inflammatory and anti-cellular stress effects.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To determine the hearing results with combined steroid therapy in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), according to the Siegel recovery criteria scale.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Study carried out in the otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery service of the Centro Médico Naval, Ciudad de México, where 150 patients diagnosed with SSHL and who received combined therapy with intratympanic dexamethasone and systemic prednisone were included.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Therapeutic effectiveness was demonstrated by correlating therapeutic success in 82% of cases and therapeutic failure in 18% of cases, by correlating it with the Siegel recovery criteria scale. When evaluating the general average of the pure tone average levels at the beginning and 6 weeks after treatment, a statistically significant difference was obtained (p = 0.001). A meta-analysis was performed following the inclusion and exclusion criteria screening, data extraction, and literature quality evaluation.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Fifteen studies involving 1312 patients were included with 673 participants in the experimental group and 639 in the control group. The results of the meta-analysis showed that, compared with traditional craniotomy or treatment, minimally invasive stereotactic puncture intracranial hematoma removal had a higher clinical total effective rate in patients with cerebral hemorrhage, an outcome that could significantly shorten the hospitalization time of patients with cerebral hemorrhage. The level of post-operative activities of daily living was significantly higher, the incidence of postoperative complications was lower, and the mortality rate was lower. This study aimed to investigate the effect of acidic cerebrospinal fluid on central canal structures after SAH.</p><p><strong>Materials and methods: </strong>Twenty-eight hybrid rabbits were studied. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid pH values were recorded before/during/after the experimental procedures. The structures related to the central canals at the level of C5 of the cervical spinal cord were then examined histopathologically. The relationship between pH values of ependymal cells and degenerated epithelial cell densities was statistically analyzed.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Mean blood pH values and degenerated ependymal cell density (n/mm<sup>2</sup>) were as follows: 7.351 ± 0.033/23 ± 7 in control, 7.322 ± 0.059/78 ± 13 in SHAM, and 7.261 ± 0.048/254 ± 62 in study animals.
