Despite its importance, standardized methodologies for assessing platelet function in cats remain underexplored. This study aimed to optimize the conditions for Chrono-log platelet impedance aggregometry (IA) in feline whole blood, focusing on the impact of agonist type (collagen or ADP), agonist concentration, and anticoagulant (citrate or hirudin) on platelet aggregation responses. Whole blood from 10 clinically healthy domestic shorthair cats was prospectively evaluated under varying experimental conditions. Our results indicated that hirudin-anticoagulated samples produced significantly higher platelet aggregation responses compared to those anticoagulated with citrate across all agonist concentrations. A partial dose-dependent relationship was observed with collagen but not with ADP. These findings underscore the importance of selecting appropriate assay conditions for accurate platelet function testing in cats. This study provides insight into the methodology of feline whole blood impedance platelet aggregometry using the Chrono-log analyzer.
","PeriodicalId":93919,"journal":{"name":"Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire","volume":"89 4","pages":"136-143"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12507057/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145260236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A secondary objective was to determine factors associated with dehiscence. Electronic medical records were searched for patients (141 dogs and 71 cats) undergoing gastrotomy from 2012 to 2024. Data collected included age, sex, additional procedures done under the same general anesthesia, presence and duration of surgical hypotension, comorbidities, long-term medications, use of a 1- or 2-layer closure, suture pattern of closure, pre-operative lactate and albumin concentrations, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status, whether or not surgery was done after-hours, a Board-certified surgeon was present, and dehiscence was confirmed. Two of 212 (0.94%) animals had a confirmed gastrotomy dehiscence based on diagnosis of septic peritonitis peri-operatively. These patients had only a gastrotomy, with no other surgical procedures. The dehiscence rate was too low and uncommon to statistically evaluate factors associated with dehiscence after gastrotomy. Confirmed gastrotomy dehiscence rates appeared lower than previously reported in the small intestines. As it was not possible to determine specific factors associated with an increased risk of dehiscence, further studies are required to identify and evaluate such factors.
","PeriodicalId":93919,"journal":{"name":"Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire","volume":"89 4","pages":"144-148"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12507053/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145260209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this cross-sectional study, all the dogs were categorized into a control group and 3 experimental groups (overweight, elderly, and dogs with diseases that can contribute to diabetes). The control group included young and healthy dogs that visited veterinary clinics mainly for health checkups or neutering. The HbA1c concentration of all the dogs was estimated and compared between the control group and the experimental groups. The HbA1c level was significantly higher in the experimental groups than in the control group. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the HbA1c concentration and all experimental variables. The HbA1c concentration was higher in the overweight group [mean, median: 3.94, 3.9; range (R): 3.5 to 4.3%], the elderly group [mean, median: 3.94, 3.9 (R: 3.5 to 4.3%)], and the disease group [mean, median: 3.99, 4.0 (R: 3.5 to 4.9%)] than in the control group [mean, median: 3.52, 3.6 (R: 2.9 to 3.8%)]. Intra-operative parameters, including surgical time, signalment, pre-operative blood abnormalities, after-hours versus daytime surgeries, and level of surgical training, showed no differences between the 2 groups. The laparotomy-assisted group had a significantly decreased anesthetic time and total hospitalization duration. There was no significant difference in post-operative complication rates between the 2 groups, although incisional infections occurred in 12/121 (10%) of the gastrotomy patients and only 2/24 (8%) of the laparotomy-assisted endoscopy patients. In addition, none of the laparotomy-assisted groups developed post-operative septic peritonitis, whereas septic peritonitis occurred in 2/121 (1.6%) of gastrotomy patients. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of 7 wk of supplementation with S. boulardii CNCM I-1079 on the fecal bacterial microbiota of healthy young Japanese black calves. Calves in the S. boulardii group (SB group) were fed 2.0 × 1010 CFUs/day of S. boulardii CNCM I-1079 in milk replacer starting at 2 wk of age. Fecal samples were collected and the V3 and V4 regions of 16S rRNA were sequenced. The SB group exhibited significantly higher fecal alpha diversity at 9 wk of age (7 wk after starting supplementation) than the untreated control group. Beta diversity differed at 6 and 9 wk of age (4 and 7 wk after supplementation). Analysis of the composition of microbiomes revealed that calves in the SB group had higher fecal levels of Bacilli_RF39 than the control group at 9 wk of age. Linear discriminant analysis of effect sizes revealed higher levels of Oscillospiraceae at 3 wk of age (1 wk after) and of Bacilli_RF39 and Atopobiaceae at 9 wk of age (7 wk after) in the SB group than in the control group. Furthermore, a higher abundance of bacteria-producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was observed at 9 wk of age than at 6 wk in the SB group. Previous studies suggest inflammation, mediated by cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), may play a developmental role. PGE2 signals through 1 of 4 receptors: EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4. Increased expression of EP4 is associated with the development of multiple human and canine cancers but has not been evaluated in feline neoplasms. The objective of this study was to describe the mRNA expression of the EP4 receptor gene (ptger4) in feline HNSCC compared to normal oral mucosal. Archived HNSCC (n = 18) and normal oral mucosa (n = 20) were evaluated for ptger4 using RNA in-situ hybridization (RNAscope). HALO was used to quantify RNAscope signals. Data were expressed as copy number, H-index, and percent probe positivity. In HNSCC and normal oral mucosa, mRNA of ptger4 was identified. The mRNA expression in HNSCC samples was significantly higher in copy number (P < 0.0001), H-index (P < 0.0001), and percent probe positivity (P < 0.0001) compared to normal oral mucosa. High EP4 receptor expression suggests inflammation may play a role in the development of feline HNSCC. All participants carried out the peg sleeve transfer task using 2 designs of peg sleeves on the same pegboard. The skills test was done in a laparoscopic trainer box using laparoscopic instruments. Participants were randomly assigned to the order in which the peg sleeve designs were tested. The score was based on time taken and errors made and was compared between peg transfers, while controlling for the skill level of the participant. The biological behavior of these tumors and the prognostic factors in dogs remain unclear. Although several studies have suggested that clinical staging (Masaoka classification) is related to prognosis, the prognostic significance of histological subtypes (WHO classification) and paraneoplastic syndromes remains controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate whether paraneoplastic syndromes, Masaoka classification, and WHO classification are associated with the prognosis of canine TET. Hypercalcemia and anemia were observed as paraneoplastic syndromes in the 29 dogs included in this study.
