Research on blood donors has focused on the erythrocyte and iron-related parameters, without considering the other cell lines of the donors. This study examined the effect of frequent blood donations on leucocytes and thrombocytes. One hundred and eighty four subjects aged 18-35 years were used for this study. The subjects were divided into 5 groups thus; 35 (19%) control group, 32 (17.4%) of first time donors, 35 (19%) of second time donors, 41 (22.3%) of third time donors and 41 (22.3%) of fourth time donors. Their full blood counts were evaluated using complete automated cell counter and values obtained were statistically analyzed. Results showed that 63% of the donors were commercial blood donors. Haematocrit (Hct) of first (41.9±0.66%), second (40.1±0.47%), third (39.1±0.54%) and fourth (33.3±0.56%) time male donors decreased progressively as number of times of donation increased, compared with control (43.9±0.55%). Total White Blood Cell (WBC) count significantly (p<0.001) decreased in first, third and fourth time donors, compared with control. Monocytes, granulocytes and platelet counts decreased progressively with repeated blood donations. Lymphocytes increased progressively following repeated blood donations. We therefore, conclude that, serial blood donation decreases Hct, WBC (monocyte and granulocyte) and platelet counts in males and increases lymphocyte count.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"44 1","pages":"11-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90333725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Substance abuse is a major contributing factor for such injuries. The current study aimed to investigate the problem of substance misuse among cab-drivers involved in non-fatal accidents. This cross-sectional study carried out at Al-Azhar University Hospitals (Cairo, Al-Hussein and Bab El-Sharia Hospitals), during the period from August 2012 to August 2014. All cab-drivers who were admitted to the emergency department with non-fatal motor car trauma were asked to participate. We identified 80 eligible drivers, 20 of them refused to participate. Thus, the final included cases were 60 drivers. Positive cases were 32 with an incidence rate of 53.3%. All were males. Socio-demographic factors were documented and urine samples were drawn to screen for abused substances (e.g., opiate, methamphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines and tramadol). The most common abused substance was cannabis (THC) (90.6%), then tramadol in 59.4%, barbiturates in 34.4%, opiates in 28.1%, benzodiazepines in 25% and finally methamphetamine in 21.9%. In addition, 90.6% abused two or more substances concomitantly and 9.4% had a single substance. This study highlighted the magnitude of substance abuse in cab-driver. The most common abused drug was cannabis and the least was methamphetamine. The majority of cases (90.6%) abused more than one substance.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"79 1","pages":"20-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88387959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used 30 mice divided into three groups containing 10 animals each: a control group, a brain injury group treated with METH and a group treated with METH+CoQ10. Various assays, such as protein thiol group, glutathione total, lipid peroxidation, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, were used to assess the damage caused by METH and the protective effects of CoQ10 on brain tissues. The METH-induced brain injury significantly increased lipid peroxidation and decreased the level of the thiol group, the glutathione total and the activity of brain antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase). The CoQ10 supplementation prevents all of these typically observed changes in METH-treated mice. Our results reveal that CoQ10 is potentially protective against METH-induced neurotoxicity in mice.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74305940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this present investigation the presence of actinomycetes infection among Intrauterine device (IUD) users and its correlation correlated with the development of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and ovarian carcinoma was studied. Endocervical swabs were obtained from ovarian carcinoma, IUD users, non-users and processed to isolate actinomycetes on actinomycetes isolation agar. The isolation rate was found to be increased among IUD users who were clinically diagnosed to have PID (52.9%) followed by ovarian carcinoma cases who were prior users of IUD (44.4%). Compared to healthy non-IUD users, IUD users with PID experienced a 158 fold statistically significant increased risk of actinomycetes infection (OR = 158.63, 95% CI = 17.84, 161.11) followed by ovarian carcinoma patients with IUDs (OR = 112.80, 95% CI = 10.59, 120.02). The isolates showed high resistance against penicillin, clindamycin and erythromycin and low resistance against tetracycline, linezolid and gentamycin. The use of IUDs facilitates the colonization by actinomycetes which in turn lead to PID and pelvic actinomycosis. Further the pelvic actinomycosis simulates pelvic malignancies. If chronic actinomycetes infection are encountered, the patients should be given long term therapy with aminoglycoside antibiotics and if a pelvic mass is evident aggressive and prolonged antibiotic therapy with surgical intervention is required.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"9 1","pages":"49-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89537402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results showed that the truffle juice was very effective against trachoma in the third phase of the disease. There was clear reduction of symptoms in patients with cortisone compounds in the form of drops plus truffle juice drops. There were also complete healing of the conjunctiva and healing of the keratitis. Partial curing was observed when cortisone plus cream of chloramphenicol was added included healing of trachoma without any change of fibrosis in the conjunctiva. In the treatment of trachoma with cortisone drops and cream plus truffle juice, complete of healing was observed but continued swelling in the capillaries with no fibrosis occurred. It was clearly noticed that in all of the treatments, there was a noticeable reduction in fibrosis of the affected site in the eye. It was also concluded that truffle juice seems to prevent fibrosis of trachoma by a large extent. On the other hand, the use of chemical antibiotic or cortisone-based compounds produced several side effects. Though these chemicals reduced the toxins caused by trachoma thereby reducing the enlargement of the cells. We can therefore clearly recommend adding truffle juice to the traditional treatment for trachoma at all stages.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"6 1","pages":"28-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79268585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The accurate determination of ovarian reserve is important for this procedure. Basal hormonal levels may help to predict ovarian reserve after stimulation. The aim of this study was to assess basal hormonal markers; Luteinizing Hormones (LH), Follicle stimulating (FSH), prolactin and anthropometric indices as predictive markers of ovarian response in patients seeking assisted reproduction. A total of 104 subjects were recruited at the Lister Hospital Fertility Centre in Accra-Ghana for this study. Anthropometric parameters: Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) were measured. Lifestyle features; exercise and smoking patterns were assessed from a questionnaire. Blood samples were drawn on second day of their menstrual cycle in the month prior to the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure and basal luteinizing hormones, FSH and prolactin assayed by ELISA method. Subjects who yielded four or less oocytes were classified as poor responders whereas those who yielded more than 4 oocytes were termed as normal responders. Basal FSH and age (12.9±0.51 IU LG and 40±0.54 years) were significantly (p<0.01) higher in poor responders than normal responders 9.7±0.61 IU LG and 36±0.42 years, respectively. Increasing age, (42.44±0.47 years), high basal FSH (13.41±0.91 IU LG) and high FSH/LH ratio (2.74±0.64) significantly but negatively correlated with retrieved oocyte (7.28±2.03) and ovarian capacity (8.44±1.16) when compared to low age (28.08±0.65 years), normal FSH (7.64±1.21 IU LG) and FSH/LH (1.23±0.16) with retrieved oocyte (20.31±3.30) and ovarian capacity (20.92±2.63), respectively. Subjects engaged in moderate to high forms of exercise recorded a normal response. Number of retrieved oocytes and ovarian capacity were negatively correlated to WHR and BMI. Basal FSH and FSH/LH ratio better predicted response of subjects after ovarian stimulation. Obesity negatively impacted on ovarian response.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"133 1","pages":"75-86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79796984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored the impact of Moringa oleifera on some blood parameters in high salt loaded rats. Twenty four male albino Wistar rats were assigned into 4 groups of 6 rats each. They were fed on either control diet, high salt diet (8% NaCl diet+1% NaCl drinking water) and/or Moringa extract (600 mg kgG b.wt. orally, once daily) ad libitum for 6 weeks. Blood samples were obtained via cardiac puncture for full blood count measurement using automated blood counter. Results revealed that the high salt fed untreated rats had significant increases in their total WBC, RBC, platelet counts, PCV, lymphocytes, P-LCR, MPV and PDW. These increases were reversed to near control levels by Moringa. Also, Moringa reversed lowered, MCHC platelet and neutrophil counts in high salt loaded rats. Values obtained for control group include: RBC (7.02±0.16×10 cell μLG), total WBC (8.08±0.80×10 cell μLG), PCV (40.30±1.14%), platelet count (673.17±18.89×10 cell μLG), RDW-SD (35.70±0.32 fL). In conclusion, Moringa oleifera extract prevents changes in total WBC, RBC count, packed cell volume (hematocrit), platelet count, lymphocytes, neutrophils, MPV, P-LCR and PDW in high salt fed rats, these parameters are determinants of the blood volume, hemostasis and the tendencies to excessive bleeding, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and sudden death.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"23 1","pages":"97-105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82502909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without these drugs, millions of people would have succumbed to infectious diseases. Regrettably, antibiotic resistance (ABR) threatens the effective treatment of these pathogens. The incidence of ABR and the emergence of multidrug-resistance bacteria are on the increase and has been considered a major public health issue. In view of this, we conducted this review of relevant published articles using extensive literature search made through PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus and HINARI on the emergence and spread of ABR, challenges and possible solutions to ABR surveillance especially in Nigeria. Findings from our review revealed that surveillance for ABR in pulmonary tuberculosis was the only system in good function in Nigeria. Regrettably, most hospitals have poor ABR systems for other bacteria. This setback was found to be linked to multifactorial reasons. Urgent and coordinated action is required at all levels to ensure preservation of these life-saving drugs for future utility. Detection of resistance and monitoring its spread requires appropriate laboratory-based surveillance. In addition, there is need to sustain the efficiency of diagnostic laboratories, improved surveillance, better regulation and education of the public, clinicians/prescribers in the appropriate use of antibiotics.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"1 1","pages":"106-113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86426688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They often constitute a double jeopardy for those affected because of stigmatization by members of the community. The purpose of this study is to explore knowledge and social distance of mental disorders among students from Cameroonian universities who reside in urban areas, as mental health among university students represents an important and growing public health concern for which epidemiological data are needed. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from October 2014 to march 2015 among 680 students from six universities. A self-administered questionnaire exploring knowledge and social distance within students was formulated. Questions were based on basic demographic information, opinions about stigmas, myths and knowledge of mental health. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to investigate the relationship between the participant’s field of study, their beliefs and perceptions about mental disorders and the participants’ length of stay in urban settings. Of 680 students surveyed, 453 have already heard about mental diseases and 227 know someone who has suffered or who is suffering from mental illness. Among them, 53.2% are attending social/human sciences studies whereas 26.9 and 19.9% are attending, respectively life sciences and applied sciences studies. Most of the respondents (71.0%) have been living in urban areas for at least five years. Recognition of common mental disorders in the studied population is poor (42.6%) and 39.5% believe that mental illness can be treated. Though respondents are university students, knowledge of mental illnesses is poor and their negative perceptions and attitudes towards individual with mental disorders suggest opportunities to address mental health issues (increase mental health literacy) in this important group of populations. A variety of negative effects (including exhaustion) have been associated with the use of these drugs. This study therefore assessed the effects of separate administration of sildenafil citrate, tramadol and their combination on Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in relation to body weight, T3 and cortisol levels in rats. Twenty male albino Wistar rats weighing 150-180 g were randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 5) thus: control (0.2 mL normal saline), sildenafil-treated (10 mg kgG1), tramadol-treated (20 mg kgG1) and sildenafil+tramadol-treated (10 and 20 mg kgG1, respectively) groups. The different drugs were administered orally, every 2 days, for 3 weeks, after one week acclimatization period. The body weight and BMR were measured weekly and serum concentrations of T3 and cortisol were measured at the end of 21 days of treatment. Tramadol significantly (p<0.05) reduced mean food intake, compared with control. Sildenafil and sildenafil+tramadol-treated groups had significantly (p<0.001, p<0.05) lower body weight change, compared with control. Sildenafl-treated group had a lower change in BMR, significantly (p<0.05) different from control and sildenafil+tramadoltreated groups. Serum T3 concentration was significantly (p<0.001) increased in tramadol and sildenafil+tramadol-treated groups, compared with control and sildenafil treated groups. Serum cortisol concentration was significantly (p<0.001) reduced in all treated groups, compared with control. Sildenafil citrate decreased body weight, BMR, serum T3 and cortisol concentrations, while tramadol increased BMR and serum T3 concentration, but decreased serum cortisol concentration and body weight. A combination of these drugs seems to act in a pattern similar to tramadol. This probably explains the feeling of exhaustion reported by users of these drugs.","PeriodicalId":93827,"journal":{"name":"Trends in medical research","volume":"10 1","pages":"51-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88585031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
