According to the relation between natural motality and the growth, a functional formula of the natural mortality coefficient is given in this study. When the von Bertalanffy's growth parameters are known, the natural mortality coefficient can be calculated for each age. As a function of age, the natural mortality coefficient has some general characters throughout the life.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"17 1","pages":"205-208"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73672662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The highest percentage of triploid was 71.4% in 0.5mg/l CB treatment. When diploids were in spawning period, most triploids had spermatocytes or developing oocytes. However, neither matured oocytes nor spermatozoa were observed in triploids. Although at 9 months of age no quantitative characters differed significantly between diploids and triploids, at 14 months the shell width and meat weight of triploids were greater than those of diploids. The relation between gametogenesis and growth in triploid scallops is discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"65 1","pages":"447-452"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80355939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Growth, DNA, RNA, protein content, acid protease activity, and swimming ability of the fry were analyzed. The fish reazed at a feeding level of 5% of the BW/day showed normal growth. Those reared at a 1% feeding level showed a slight increase in body weight and protein content. At a 0.5 feedling level, body weight and protein content remained almost constant. Body weight and protein content of starved fish decreased. RNA/DNA and Protein/DNA values of fish reared at a feeding level of 5% of the BW/day were higher than those reared with a limited food supply. Swimming speed of chum salmon decreased in starved fish. A linear correlation was observed between condition factor and swimming speed. Protein content decreased on the 4th week after starvation, when the amount of total protein of chum salmon and the mortality increased coni-cidently. At the same time, the acid protease in the muscle had been activated. Individual size differences for those reared under a feeding level of 0.5% and 1.0%/day (limited food supply) was larger than that of the individuals either starved or reared under a feeding level of 5% of BW. The present data suggests that the requirement for releasing chum fry are a high ratio of RNA/DNA, Protein/DNA, condition factor, and a stronger swimming ability.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"10 1","pages":"1263-1269"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75143968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two or more generations in the year could be observed according to the distributions of carapace length and number of eggs carried. Two rostrum types were observed; Sword type and Blade type. In the Sword type, the lower border of rostrum was straight from base to distal edge, while in the Blade type, it was expanded roundly. The number of lower border teeth of rostrum was significantly different between two types. 99% of the male was Sword type. In the female, the proportion of the Blade type reached only 78%. The ovigerous ratio of the Blade type was higher than that of the Sword type. These results indicate the sexual dimorphism of Hipplyte ventricosa.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"29 1","pages":"613-618"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76746690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A growth curve was fitted to length at age data and the life span was examined. It was found that the recruitment period started in November with a body length around 5cm and com-pleted in June of the following year. The mode of age O group during the recruitment period was not used in further interpretations, because the continuous addition of newly recruited individuals was found to lower its value. After recruitment completion, it was found that the growth of the mantis shrimp has seasonal oscillation with the highest growth rate from late summer to late autumn. Females showed higher growth oscillation than males. Growth of the mantis shrimp was best expressed by the Pauly and Gaschutz equation as Lt=16.12{1-exp[-0.395(t+2.667)-(0.486/2π)sin 2π(t-0.323)]} for females and Lt=21.51{1-exp[-0.264(1+2.473)-(0.232/2π)sin 2π(t-0.281)]}for males, where Lt is body length in cm and t is age in months. Allele frequencies at each locus were calculated for each population. There were clear differences of allele frequencies at three loci (α-Gpdh, Me-2, Sod) between populations north of Iwate Prefecture and those south of Miyagi Prefecture. A cluster analysis based on genetic similarities calculated from allele fre-quencies at all 10 loci observed suggests that sand-lance among the Pacific coast of Japan are composed of two population groups; northern and southern groups. The boundary exsists be-tween Iwate and Miyagi Prefecture. Geographic distribution of these two groups is consistent with that of two groups previously described by morphological studies. Genetic distance between these groups falls within the values of intraspecific marine teleost populations. Comparison of genetic similarities and mean heterozygosities among populations suggests that the southern group has a smaller-scale genetic divergence and more homogeneous genetic structure than the northern group.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"6 1","pages":"1297-1304"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86962795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of the 6 strains which were taxonomically examined, they were identified as Pseudomonas. Their vitamin B12 productivity was measured by Euglena bioassay method. The concentrations of vitamin B12 in the bacterial suspension were measured daily and the higbest levels of B12 were estimated to be 1.2-16.5ng/ml during 8 day culture. Most (98.1-99.3%) of the vitamin B12 which was produced accumulated inside the bacterial cells. The rotifer growths were tested in batch cultures under germ-free condition, provided with vitamin B12-producing bacteria as the sole food source, and with these bacteria as a complement of Nannochloropsis oculata or baker's yeast Saccharompces cerevisiae. The rotifer showed rapid growth when vitamin B12 producing bacterial cells were supplied in a range of 107-1011cells/ml. The results imply that in mass production tank of the rotifer vitamin B12-producing bacteria might play an important role as vitamin B12 supplier.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"18 6 1","pages":"1873-1880"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78131360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pH-activity curves observed for IMP-decomposition in fish muscle extract varied with the different fish species and their pattern could be well explained by the activity ratios of 5'-nucle-otidase to acid phosphatase. It was therefore confirmed that IMP is decomposed in fish muscle by the action of a 5'-nucleotidase and an acid phosphatase. These enzymes were suppressed by addition of sodium chloride, in a competitive inhibitory manner. The apparent Ki values for 5'-nucleotidase and acid phosphatase of 8 species of fish examined, closely resembled each other, and were calculated to be 0.111-0.161M and 0.070-0.142M, respectively. It was also found that both enzymes were suppressed by addition of glycerine in the same manner. The apparent Ki values for 5'-nucleotidase and acid phosphatase of these fishes, regardless of difference of species of fish, were calculated to be 4.02-6.31M and 1.09-1.67M, respectively.","PeriodicalId":9361,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Japanese Society of Scientific Fisheries","volume":"32 1","pages":"1947-1951"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81288208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
