To date, much of DL research has focused on the acquisition and representation of digital objects, optimizing and personalizing user services, and interoperability efforts. Few DLs employ mirrors, much less some of the more sophisticated, non-client-server architectures found in WWW deployment, e.g. peer-to-peer systems and distributed storage architectures. Although these new architectures have been succesfully applied to a large number of Internet services, they have had little impact on DL research. Are they technically suitable for DL use, or do social and economic issues prevent their adoption?","PeriodicalId":93355,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... ICPP Workshops on. Our experimental platform uses NFS (Network File System) to support an application characterized by its high processing and storage requirements. We evaluate the overall system by varying several NFS parameters as well as the underlying network topology and data access patterns. We have also examined the relevance of two other important file management access mechanisms: caching and prefetching. Our experimental results have allowed us to identify the major system parameters affecting the performance of NFS. We then propose the use of a predictive data access mechanisms. Under this mechanism, the file server should detect the similarities among the most recent I/O requests incoming from a set of cooperating clients. Once having identified the access pattern, the file server will be able to multicast the required data even before receiving explicit I/O data requests from the clients. Under this predictive mechanism, the system performance should improve as the number of explicit I/O requests directed to the file server decreases.","PeriodicalId":93355,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... In particular, we consider the following two cases: (1) Given the total number of converters available in the system, allocate them at outgoing links of the node, such that the total amount of traffic getting through the system is maximized. (2) Given the number of converters available at each node in the system, allocate them properly at the outgoing links of the node, such that the total amount of traffic getting through the system is maximized. An optimization algorithm is proposed to solve case (1), and a heuristic algorithm is developed to find an approximate solution for case (2). Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of our solutions.","PeriodicalId":93355,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... ICPP Workshops on. This constraint may be removed by introducing wavelength converters, which take the data modulated on an input wavelength, and transfer it to a different wavelength. Wavelength converters improve network blocking performance as well as QoS management. In this paper we present a scheme for a dynamic resource management using heterogeneous traffic descriptors. A simple C-priority class scheme to support basic QoS at the DWDM layer in optical networks is presented. Unlike existing approaches which depend on buffers management and scheduling algorithms, our scheme does not require any buffers in the DWDM layer in order to ensure the header packet computing and differentiate the classes. The proposed scheme assigns different delayed times to each class in order to isolate higher priority classes from lower priority classes. Finally, we develop a traffic model and an allocation wavelength model, and analyze the blocking probability of each class.","PeriodicalId":93355,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ...
