To better understand the severity of the symptoms in relation to the antigen in EAE, we explored the dose-symptom relationship between the quantity of MOG35-55 and clinical symptoms in a C57/BL6 mouse pilot study. To isolate the impact of MOG35-55 we developed an EAE model that does not require the additional application of pertussis toxin. Mice were treated with either 50µg, 100µg, or 150µg of MOG35-55 emulsified in complete Freund’s adjuvant. Following induction, the mice were assessed for clinical symptoms daily, and tested weekly for gross and fine motor impairments, mechanical allodynia, and anxiety-like behaviours. The time course of sensorimotor function loss was characterized by multiphasic disease progression. Findings also suggested an inverted U-shape dose-response relationship with a medium dosage of 100 µl MOG35-55 dosage aggravating symptom severity in induced animals. Outcomes measured by a clinical score correlated with performance on motor and nociceptive sensitivity tasks. As the disease progressed, fine and gross motor impairments and nociceptive sensitivity diminished and impairments persisted beyond 8 weeks. This study indicates that mild to moderate EAE can be induced in the absence of use of pertussis toxin. The progression suggests a spontaneously multiphasic disease course, which may have attractive implications for clinically relevant animal models.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45295263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the present experiment is to investigate the phylogenetic background of this electrochemical network by creating a comparable binary and ternary interplay of interactions between different neurotransmitters (noradrenaline, histamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, glutamate, and dopamine) in the unicellular eukaryote Tetrahymena pyriformis. Tetrahymena – as a protozoon – has no nervous system; however, it has been shown that it has not only the ability to store, synthesize and secrete biogenic amines but it also bears binding sites for the corresponding receptors of some of these molecules. The chemotactic responsiveness elicited by the neurotransmitters was examined in Tetrahymena cells, using a modified version of Leick’s two-chamber capillary chemotaxis assay with 20-minute incubation times. The concentration course of each neurotransmitter was determined and the concentration eliciting the strongest effect was further used to examine the chemotactic response of the neurotransmitters when used in pairs and in groups of three. Adequate cellular responses (chemoattractant and chemorepellent) were detected in both cases when the neurotransmitters were used alone and in combinations. A pattern detected in these responses was related to the neurotransmitters’ physicochemical characteristics (XlogP, TPSA). These provide evidence that the chief regulatory molecules of the CNS can be identified even in lower, eukaryotic unicellular levels of phylogeny and possibly alter the basic functions of these organisms. In summary, our results support the theory that any evolved nervous system-like interplay could stem from a common origin. Therefore, identifying the “ancient” function of a molecule or its receptor effect can open new windows in the advancement of therapeutic interventions.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42860234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prolonged therapeutic interventions may include strengthening of the affected musculature below the lesion. Eccentric resistance training has shown to positively impact strength and function inferior to the iSCI. It has yet to be determined if the severity of injury impacts sensitivity to such exercise interventions. A 12-week lower extremity, eccentrically-biased resistance training program was implemented in a mixed sample of walkers (n = 4) and wheelchair users (n = 7) with iSCI. Strength, walking speed, mobility, and daily step activity were analyzed using multiple 1 way ANOVAs with percent improvement from pre- to post-test as the dependent variable and community traversing style as the independent-between factors. Traversing style made no impact on strength gained (eccentric and isometric) nor increase in daily step activity (p > 0.05). Chair users experienced greater improvement in walking speed (p = 0.03) and mobility (p = 0.025) when compared to the walkers, respectively. These preliminary data may represent a ceiling effect for community ambulators in respect to walking function without formal gait training. Alternatively, those using chairs may attain walking improvement in the absence of structured walking therapy. Further support is provided for implementation of lower extremity exercise training regardless of severity of iSCI as the trajectory of improvement in strength and step activity was similar between groups.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67530444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current system leads to gaps in optimal care for children beginning with coaches who fail to identify a sport-relation concussion, remove a player from the practice or game or properly assess the player for a concussion before returning them to play according to each states’ laws; to more systemic problems that result from lack of communication with parents and school officials. The result is a delay in diagnosis and treatment, and in the provision of follow-up health services, concussion-related educational and insurance-related services and applicable insurance waivers. Technological, institutional and infrastructural changes are often considered to be effective measures in achieving sustainability goals. No doubt all such external changes are necessary; however, they remain inadequate without inner changes that make individual behaviour sustainable. This study points out that the root causes of our unsustainable behaviour is our perceived separateness from fellow human beings and the natural environment, which results in self-centeredness, greed and fear. Research findings in neuroscience suggest that the perceived separateness is an illusion created by our brain. Nevertheless, the brain itself is endowed with the capacity to overcome this separateness by Universal Love. Spirituality is about re-wiring the brain to realize this capacity. Most spiritual practices, both religious and non-religious, represent different methods to achieve this goal.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47997866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Statistical analysis was performed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, chi-square and the Mann-Whitney U tests.Results: Twenty publications were included. Of these, 11 were retrospective studies and 9 were case reports. In total, CTTH was reported in 226 cases. The age parameter showed a significantly non-Gaussian distribution (KS test; p-value < 0.001). The median age was 1,83 years (range: 7 days – 21 years; P25 = 1.00 year, P75 = 3.00 years; IQR = 2 years). The two most common clinical conditions associated to CTTH were cerebral palsy (51 cases; 22.6%) and glutaric aciduria type 1 (50 cases; 22.10%). CTTH was often found in the absence of other concomitant brain MRI abnormalities (32 cases; 21.8%).Conclusions: CTTH is an uncommon neuroimaging finding that is mainly related to the acquisitionimprovement of a physiologicalmotor developmental process. The finding is influenced by hypoxic ischemic and toxic?metabolic factors. Data regarding DWI and follow-up are largely unreported and deserve to be further explored.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42602309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pharmacological treatments demonstrated benefits on clinical endpoints without improving QoL. We evaluated the effects of a group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) on QoL disease progression. Methods: One-year multi-centre controlled multivariate-matched study was organised on Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) patients with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) < 4, MS duration < 2 years, treated by interferon I? in 11 French centres. For each new patient, the two best-matching patients for age, gender, EDSS, mood, illness duration baseline variables were selected in the other centres. The self-filled Two Lives Scale (TLS)-QoL10 was used at months (M) 0-3-6-9-12-15; the post-baseline mean QoL was the endpoint. We compared CBT + I? to I? alone. The effect of disease progression on QoL was evaluated by modelling, for each visit, the effect of EDSS on QoL at later visits.Results: 19 + 32 patients were recruited. Compared to placebo, improvements of 1.10 (95%CI [0.31-1.89], p = 0.009) and 1.43*** [0.72, 2.15] were observed in the CBT group on QoL and coping scales, respectively. Coping explained 81%*** [57, 100] of the effect of CBT on QoL. QoL was negatively affected by disease progression (0.95*** [-1.21; 0.63]), whereas EDSS was influenced by QoL values (-0.10*** [-0.14; -0.06]).Conclusions: We observed a clinically significant beneficial effect of CBT on QoL, the effect of CBT essentially explained by an increase of coping, a positive influence of QoL on disease progression. QoL is both the most important target for patients and a factor of slowing disease progression.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42024252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key problem for this nascent field is that interpretations of religious experiences range from a regression to the oceanic oneness of the womb to supersensory apprehensions of transcendent realities. Identifying appropriate subjects is therefore problematic. Correlating the complex array of neurobiological data obtained from neuroimaging, genetic analysis and lab tests with such elusive “religious experiences” offers little hope of scientific rigor. This paper proposes a new approach. Mystical traditions have consistently described a “subtle anatomy” organized around a circuit running through the center of the spine that connects the human and the divine. If descriptions of this circuit are based on actual interoceptions, then it corresponds to a little-known, epigenetically suppressed structure that ensheathes the central axis of the central nervous system; Reissner’s fiber (RF). Rather than identifying subjects based on self-reporting and correlating their experiences with an array of neurobiological data, this new approach would regenerate the fiber, measure its activity and explore possible correlations with religious experiences.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47691708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected using several instruments, including: the Attention Network Test; academic performance tests and semi-structured interviews. Results of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of students of the experimental and control groups on the executive control in favor of the experimental group after controlling the IQ score and pre-test scores. Further, there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of student of the experimental and control groups on the academic achievement tests (except of mathematics) in favor of the experimental group. The qualitative data also supported the quantitative findings. Therefore, dialogic teaching has significantly greater and more positive changes on some aspects of attention and academic performance.","PeriodicalId":93258,"journal":{"name":"Annals of behavioral neuroscience","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49279326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
