The proposed method eliminates the 'front-back' ambiguity caused by the symmetry of the two microphones reported previously and improves the performance of DOA estimation in noisy speech environments. Our method enhances the spatial awareness of hearing-impaired users by displaying the precise DOA angle of speech source on their smartphone screen. For increased efficiency, noise-robustness, and accuracy of the proposed DOA estimation method, a spectral pre-filtering technique and a Voice Activity Detector (VAD) based post-filtering are used along with a modified generalized cross-correlation (GCC) technique. Real recorded and simulated data under realistic noisy conditions are used in the evaluations of the proposed algorithm. Real-time implementation of the proposed system is carried out on an Android-based smartphone without any additional hardware or external microphone attachments. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed method versus those without pre or post-filtering under three different noisy conditions with 0dB to 10dB signal to noise ratios (SNRs).</p>","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In astronomy, calibration algorithms consist of solving for the unknown complex antenna gains using a known model of the sky. Calibration is a key computation to provide images of the sky at good quality and high resolutions. In the context of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project, real-time and low power execution of the calibration is challenging. In this paper, we show that the CohJohnes algorithm provides good properties for being executed efficiently on the new generation of many-core embedded platforms. Experimental results are provided using the Kalray MPPA Bostan platform running 288 64-bit VLIW cores and delivering up to 845 GFLOPS at 12W.","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The procedure is based on the cycle-spinning approach applied to the Translation-invariant Wavelet Transform. It exploits the characteristics of the Wavelets modulus maxima propagation along decomposition levels (scales) as the criterion to select the relevant coefficients. Selection was performed by a data classifier inspired on a Self-organizing Map but with enhancements to incorporate self-scalability and multiple instance learning capabilities. The procedure was employed for the processing of Partial Discharge signals, which is a technique for the diagnostics of high-voltage equipment. We performed comparisons with standard form classifiers based on the Multilayer Perceptron and Support Vector Machines. The results show that the technique allows the same orders of accuracy and generalization of those classifiers, but with the advantages of self-scalability, dimensional independence, low processing cost and high degree of parallelization.","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. RRM should provide efficient spectrum and channel allocation mechanisms, modulation selection algorithms, power control and load balancing. Spectrum sensing is a key enabling technology for a broad class of cognitive radio systems involving spectrum agility. In order to identify spectral opportunities, spectrum sensing is needed by the secondary users (SU). In this paper a spectral management and sensing for three types of wireless signals within the IEEE802 family (Wi-Fi, Zig-Bee and Bluetooth) are presented. Then SU efficiently exploit the idle spectrum and vacate it when required by primary user (PU). A simulation system is built and Energy Detector technique is used for sensing the spectrum. The results shows that delay times for changing the status between exploiting and vacating the channels are too low. The error detection is occurred in limited range of SNR because of using fixed threshold level. ","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Often specific resource or memory requirements and performance can be estimated only through simulation. This can be difficult when detailed system descriptions are used. There is a need for quick simulation and estimation of performance. The Rapid Abstract Control (RAC) model is presented as an approach to solve this problem. Simple primitives are defined that can be used to construct models for simulation. The Single Scale Retinex (SSR) algorithm is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the modeling approach.","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The Ethernet-based Internet section of the transmission chain inflicts random packet erasures, which is modelled by the Binary Erasure Channel (BE), while the wireless downlink imposes both fading and noise. A novel Log-Likelihood Ratio based packet reliability meric is used for identifying the channel-decoded packets, which are likely to be error-infested. Packets having residual errors must not be passed on to the LT decoder for the sake of avoiding LT-decoding-induced error propagation. The proposed scheme is capable of maintaining an infinitesimally low packet error ratio in the downlink of the wireless Internet for Eb/N0 values in excess of about 3dB.","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The proposed transcoders consist of both picture type conversion and syntax conversion in the compressed domain, and can highly reduce the computation amount in comparison with that of the conventional tandem transcoding method, in which decoding and re-encoding are necessary. The proposed syntax conversion can provide loss-less conversion, while the conventional tandem method is lossy conversion. Timestamp adjustment method is also proposed to avoid audio visual de-synchronization problem due to picture type conversion, when the stream is transmitted via constant bandwidth network. Complexity evaluation results based on DSP implementation confirm that the complexity of the proposed transcoders is very low and is less than 1/3 of that of the conventional tandem transcoder.","PeriodicalId":93225,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
