Medical science that contains ever-increasing amounts of knowledge, such as the medical history of a patient, medical data about diseases, diagnosis and treatment methods, should be necessarily a science of information. The real problem faced by patients and healthcare providers is finding and using relevant knowledge at the right time. In this context, in the middle of 1950s, intelligent computer systems, called clinical decision support systems (CDSS), were introduced as a new concept. CDSS is defined as an active intelligent system that can help medical experts to make decisions by taking specific recommendations. Also, it provides decisions based on resolving patient-specific information and related medical truths. The objective of this chapter is to focus on these systems and explain relations with the field of artificial intelligence methods, approaches, or techniques in this manner.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70434027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though it is not possible to create standard prescriptions across countries, this paper aims to develop a solid understanding of how biotechnology and institutions co-evolve that might shed light to innovation policy issues for biotechnology across developing countries. The immediate goal is the Turkish policy makers but it will surely have policy implications for developing countries in general. Through mapping innovation processes/functions over time, it is possible to develop insights of the dynamics of innovation systems. This mapping is carried out for the Turkish biotechnology system, and the findings are summarized.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70434918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through BDS it is possible to treat most of the organosulfur compounds recalcitrant to the conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS), the petroleum industry's solution, at mild operating conditions, without the need for molecular hydrogen or metal catalysts. This technique results in lower emissions, smaller residue production, and less energy consumption, which makes BDS an eco-friendly process that can complement HDS making it more efficient. BDS has been extensively studied and much is already known about the process. Clearly, BDS presents advantages as a complementary technique to HDS; however, its commercial use has been delayed by several limitations both upstream and downstream the process. This study will comprehensively review and discuss key issues, like reduction of the BDS costs, advances, and/or challenges for a competitive BDS towards its potential industrial application aiming ultra-low sulfur fuels.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70435345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many dyes are relevant for staining in industries, especially textile and food related. Among other environmental problems, one obvious issue is the coloring effect on effluents from industrial sites and thus the release of xenobiotics into nature. Microorganisms (algae, fungi, yeast, and bacteria) have been found to decolorize a number of azo dyes. Decolorization of azo dyes by microbial cultures is summarized and this is mostly linked to initial activation or even cleavage of the azo bond (e.g., by azoreductases). However, it does not necessarily mean that the compound is degraded to non-toxic products. Various mechanisms of microbial decolorization processes were discovered, including adsorption, enzymatic degradation, or a combination of both. Oxidases and reductases were found to be involved, which contain azoreductase, lignin peroxidase, Mn peroxidase, laccase, tyrosinase, and so on. A focus is on the azoreductases including classification, activity, and applicability.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70435484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many models and algorithms have been developed to identify GRNs using mainly gene expression profile as data source. As the gene expression data usually has limited number of samples and inherent noise, the integration of gene expression with several other sources of information can be vital for accurately inferring GRNs. For instance, some prior information about the overall topological structure of the GRN can guide inference techniques toward better results. In addition to gene expression data, recently biological information from heterogeneous data sources have been integrated by GRN inference methods as well. The objective of this chapter is to present an overview of GRN inference models and techniques with focus on incorporation of prior information such as, global and local topological features and integration of several heterogeneous data sources.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70431077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Endophytic colonies and plant associations are beneficial in many ways such as supplying biologically fixed nitrogen, regulation of phytohormone production thus enhancing the plant growth, resistance to environmental stress etc. these associations are also important for the agriculture and industries because they produce important medicinal, agriculture and industrial compounds as endophytic metabolites. When we concern about the waste management, degradation and biotransformation of several toxins, the phytoremediation by using endophytes has been developed as important tool. Current chapter reviles, study and collect most of important knowledge, recent ongoing research, technologies, roles and advancements in biodegradation and biotransformation of different types of toxic wastes and their effects on environment with phytoremediation by endophytes.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70431283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research uses data from four biannual surveys on the use and development of biotechnology collected by Statistics Canada between 1999 and 2005, and follows these firms in the official business register of the organisation up to 2009, to build a Cox proportional hazard model of firm survival. The research finds that firms that collaborate for exploration purposes have better chances of survival than others. Results also suggest that a larger number of patents decreases the probability of survival. Investigation of the product development process shows that because of the vast resources necessary for clinical research, firms enter the production and commercialisation stage in a weak position, which may then result in firm exit.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70432137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent surge of big data in biology, the demand for personalised medicines, evolving pathogens and increasing lifestyle-associated risks, asks for smart, robust, low-cost and high-throughput drug design. Computer-aided drug design techniques allow rapid screening of ultra-large chemical libraries within minutes. This is immensely necessary to the drug discovery pipeline, which is presently burdened with high attrition rates, failures, huge capital and time investment. With increasing drug resistance and difficult druggable targets, there is a growing need for novel drug scaffolds which is partly satisfied by fragment based drug design and de novo methods. The chapter discusses various aspects of protein docking and emphasises on its application in drug design.","PeriodicalId":93084,"journal":{"name":"Biotechnology (Faisalabad, Pakistan)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70432684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
