Occupational stress and job satisfaction both indicate workers’ appraisal towards the workplace and work itself. Aim: This study aimed at determining the main nurses' perceived job related stressors and investigating its effect on nurses' job satisfaction in El Shatby Maternity University Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. Subject and Methods: A descriptive correlation cross sectional study was carried out on all staff nurses (50) in Gynecology and Obstetrics Department in El Shatby Maternity University Hospital who were available during time of data collection. Two standardized questionnaires were used to measure the variables from nurses' point of view: Expanded Nursing Stress Scale and Job Satisfaction Scale. Results: Nearly all studied nurses were suffered from stress with different levels. Approximately 80% (40/50) of studied nurses had high stress level while 12% (6/50) had low stress level. The majority of studied nurses 84% (42/50) were dissatisfied with their job. Older nurses had low stress level compared to younger nurses. There were statistically significant negative correlations between job related stressors and job satisfaction. Conclusions: Higher stress level corresponded to low job satisfaction level where the majority of staff nurses were dissatisfied with their job and also older nurses were more satisfied than younger nurses. Recommendations: Designing and implementing educational program on \"how to manage work related stressors\" at health care settings (hospitals). Further studies are needed with a larger sample ranging across different governmental and private hospitals in different governorates to increase the generalizability of the results.","PeriodicalId":92921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of community medicine (Reno, Nev.)","volume":"32 1","pages":"1-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66239988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among a sample of rural children under 5 years of age. Subjects &methods: A systematic random sample of 3871 children 0-59 months were selected from 21 rural family health units in 2 districts in Lower Egypt. The selected children were assessed for weight and height/length. The mothers' of selected children were interviewed using a structured questionnaire about feeding of children as well as family characteristics. Body mass index for age was calculated for every child and assessed on the reference curve for growth chart of WHO. Z scores were used to determine overweight and obesity. Results: The prevalence of overweight was 11.8% and the prevalence of obesity was 3.7% among the children studied. The main risk factor for combined overweight and obesity below 24 months was milk formula as predominant feeding while the main risk factor for overweight/obesity from 2-5 years was male gender. Conclusion: This study revealed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity in children less than 5 years of age, which mandates future follow up studies on wider areas all over Egypt.","PeriodicalId":92921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of community medicine (Reno, Nev.)","volume":"32 1","pages":"59-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66240305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodology: The study is descriptive one aimed to highlight both avoidable and non-avoidable causes of maternal mortality, in addition to other relevant issues in order to formulate the appropriate strategies to overcome the avoidable causes of maternal mortality in Assiut Governorate. The relevant data of the study obtained through secondary analysis of data of maternal mortality records of Assiut Health Directorate (MCH Department), 2009. Data of maternal deaths collected by the concerned medical staff through a special questionnaire designed by MOHP (Maternal Mortality Surveillance System).This questionnaire covered demographic data of the target women, place, date and time of death relative to pregnancy (i.e. during abortion, labor, puerperium), full obstetric history, thorough & meticulous detail of last pregnancy, type of obstetric care delivered to the target woman (i.e. place & time of initiation of last labor, associated complications, outcome of the baby …..etc). Results: Maternal mortality in Assiut Governorate, 2009 was 68 / 100,000 live births. 44% of deaths happened during perperium and 24% during pregnancy. 34.6% of deaths occurred at home and 25.3% occurred among nulli-prous women. Only 14% of women completed their antenatal care visits, about one-half of cases (51.5%) seek antenatal care once or twice. Hypertensive diseases of pregnancy was the first direct cause of death (27.1%), followed by unexpected sudden death which may be due to pulmonary embolism (18.6%), then postpartum hemorrhage (16.9%), and puerperal sepsis (11.9%).Conclusion: Maternal mortality still represents a major public health problem in Upper Egypt","PeriodicalId":92921,"journal":{"name":"Journal of community medicine (Reno, Nev.)","volume":"32 1","pages":"37-49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66240449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
