In comparison to a full search algorithm the technique significantly reduces the required computational load (by a factor of approximately fifty) whilst maintaining the performance in terms of prediction error. Further gains in prediction error performance are expected as the new algorithm is investigated further.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... A multiresolution approach is formulated to compute a C/sup 2/-continuous surface through a set of irregularly spaced samples. The algorithm makes use of a coarse-to-fine hierarchy of control lattices to generate a sequence of surfaces whose sum approaches the desired interpolating surface. Experimental results demonstrate that high fidelity reconstruction is possible from a selected set of sparse and irregular samples.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... Conventional cluster-dot screens at high resolution ink jet printing produces severe moire patterns that are visible beating frequency components between screen, and horizontal print banding frequencies. It also results ink bleeding due to too much ink printed locally. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the technique.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... We present an object-based video representation that facilitates both compression and retrieval. Typically in retrieval applications, a video sequence is subdivided in time into a set of shorter segments each of which contains similar content. These segments are represented by 2-D representative images called \"key-frames\" that greatly reduce amount of data that is searched. However, key-frames do not describe the motions and actions of objects within the segment. We propose a representation that extends the ideas of the key-frame to further include what we define as \"key-objects\". These key-objects consist of regions within a key-frame that move with similar motion. Thus our key-objects allow a retrieval system to more efficiently present information to users and assist them in browsing and retrieving relevant video content.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... A method for coastline detection based on a sequence of basic-processing procedures followed by a contour tracing algorithm is also introduced in order to obtain sea-land separation to enhance the internal wave detection problem. The utility of wavelet analysis as a tool for automatic oceanic internal wave detection and orientation from SAR images is examined using the 2-D wavelet transform based on the local modulus maxima. We show that the evolution of wavelet local maxima across scales characterize the local shape of these quasi-linear structures. The results from this study show that wavelet analysis is an excellent tool to detect internal waves from satellite images against internal wave lookalikes.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... The three-dimensional information makes it possible to detect a subtle change in any field of the lung. However, the diagnostic procedure is time-consuming, since a considerable number of images have to be reviewed in one examination. In order to lessen the burden to the reviewing physician and to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, we are developing a computer system, by which shadows of diagnostic importance can be highlighted among a number of nuisance changes. In particular, the peripheral blood vessels are analyzed with a special focus on the changes caused by lung cancer. We developed a computer algorithm, by which pulmonary blood vessels are extracted after removing the background bias. The comparison between the computer algorithm and an expert physician's reading showed a good agreement. Furthermore, this system can provide temporal changes in blood vessels, which are extremely important in diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... Candidate target pixels are identified using constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection. If only a single radar image is available, a 2-D site model is constructed and used to determine regions inhospitable to targets. In multipass imagery, false alarm reduction is based on consistent appearance of the target blob in two or more images after registration. Finally, a target-versus-clutter discrimination based on size, shape and intensity features further reduces false alarms in preparation for target recognition algorithms.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... The hull algorithm is applied only on the direction(s) along which the signal is more structured. The number of iterations is adjusted to the SNR of the sub-bands, so as to preserve spatial details to the largest extent. Comparisons with the standard geometric filter are presented for images affected by synthetic multiplicative (speckle) noise. Results are pretty superior to those achieved without multiresolution context, both visually and in terms of SNR.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ... The scheme is initialized by the adaptation of a wireframe model to the consistent depth information. Robust classification techniques are then used to obtain an articulated description of the foreground of the scene (head, neck, shoulders). The object articulation procedure is based on a novel scheme for the segmentation of the rigid 3D motion fields of the triangle patches of the 3D model object. Spatial neighborhood constraints are used to improve the reliability of the original triangle motion estimation. The motion estimation and motion field segmentation procedures are repeated iteratively until a satisfactory object articulation emerges. Rigid 3D motion estimation is performed next for each resulting sub-object. The performance of the resulting articulation method is evaluated experimentally.","PeriodicalId":92344,"journal":{"name":"Computer analysis of images and patterns : proceedings of the ...
