E. H. Duckworth was a London-based dental practitioner who, following decorated action in the First World War and a period living in South Africa, set up practice in North London in the 1930s. From there, during the Second World War, he became heavily involved in dental politics through the Group Movement, which evolved from the committees of local practitioners set up to support absent mobilised dentists and their practices. The Movement became a force for unity in the profession, bringing together the three representative organisations of the time but, largely through Duckworth and his monthly publication of a circular newsletter, became one of the voices opposed to the introduction of a national dental service. This paper presents a portrait of the polymath J. E. H. Duckworth, and the arguments presented against the introduction of a dental National Health Service, seen largely through his writings in the London Dental Circular.","PeriodicalId":9229,"journal":{"name":"British Dental Journal","volume":"241 8","pages":"578-584"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2026-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149230836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plain radiography did not demonstrate a radiopacity; however, subsequent ultrasound examination supported this finding. Three months after the initial consultation, while waiting for removal of the calculus, the patient re-presented with mobility of the lower anterior teeth and progressive swelling, prompting repeat orthopantomography and an urgent computed tomography scan of the mandible. These revealed a 27 mm defect within the anterior mandible. Following extensive histopathological examination together with staging investigations and molecular analysis, a diagnosis of T4a, N1, M1 poorly differentiated salivary carcinoma NOS (not otherwise specified) of the sublingual gland was established. Metastatic disease was identified in the lungs, brain and spine, with death occurring ten months after diagnosis. This case highlights the need for careful assessment and heightened awareness of rare salivary gland pathologies particularly when symptoms progress despite initially unremarkable investigations.","PeriodicalId":9229,"journal":{"name":"British Dental Journal","volume":"241 8","pages":"553-556"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2026-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149230834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
