The award of a Nuffield Dental Fellowship put him on the path to an academic career, gaining first a Diploma in Bacteriology and then a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Fame came with the award of a Chair in Dental Surgery and then appointment as Director of Dental Studies at University College Hospital Medical School, later Dean of Dentistry and then Medicine. His bacterial knowledge supported his work on the causation especially of periodontal disease. Community engagement is a type of community-based education, which has been advocated as a promising pedagogical approach to help institutions produce socially accountable graduates. It is conceptualised as a form of experiential education which uses community exposure educational programmes or activities (i.e., students are exposed to the population/community of interest usually in a non-clinical setting) to highlight and address community health care needs. Community engaged education can help students appreciate the role of the social determinants of health in shaping oral health; provide opportunities to improve empathy, cultural competence and sensitivity; improve interpersonal skills and communication; and may open the eyes of new graduates into the importance of social justice and health equity in their future professional practice. We describe the evolution of the role and its future amidst a dynamic healthcare landscape. Dental nurse specialists provide patient care and advocacy among the multidisciplinary team. They aid in clinical assessments, educate and ensure patient needs are addressed. Additionally, they play a major role in clinical governance by championing innovation, training staff and participating in policy discussions. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust has developed dental nurse specialist roles alongside the London Southbank University's part-time BSc (Hons) Enhanced Dental Nursing Practice. This first-of-its-kind programme trains dental nurses for a wider breadth of responsibilities, offering diverse career pathways for dental nursing specialists. Several subspecialties are recognised, all of which involve their distinct contributions to patient care. The dental nurse specialist role has developed significantly from its origins, yet progress is needed in protecting the title and establishing a firmer legal framework.
